A mental or cognitive map is a unique, personal representation of reality that individuals use for orientation, navigation, and judgement. Mental maps become more complex over time as people incorporate direct and indirect experiences. While no two mental maps are identical, they are based on a person's experiences with an area as well as information from media or general reputation. Extensive media coverage can distort impressions of actual situations.
