2. About this virus This virus was first discovered in a piggery near Sydney, Australia in 1997. This virus is very contagious it moved from shed to shed and pen to pen affecting the innocent pigs within. It caused many pigs to be born dead, with deformities, or with abnormalities in the central nervous system. This virus spread to workers at the piggery who started to get a flu-like sickness. Fruit bats who flew around near the piggery had antibodies to the Menangle Virus, this proves that they had been exposed to the virus. People believe that the virus originated in fruit bats and it was a slightly rare event that caused them to jump into the pigs. This virus belongs to the Paramyxovirus family. Menangle Virus
