This document discusses cell signaling and different types of cell communication. It describes four main categories of chemical signaling: autocrine signaling within a single cell, paracrine signaling between nearby cells, endocrine signaling over long distances via the circulatory system, and direct signaling through cell-cell contact structures. Specific examples are provided to illustrate each type of signaling, such as synaptic signaling between neurons as an example of paracrine signaling and growth hormone regulation of cartilage cell division as an example of endocrine signaling. The roles of different receptors, ligands, and intracellular signaling pathways involved in cell communication are also overviewed.
