Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

86. Q4
• Löwendenkmal, or the Lion of Lucerne, is a rock relief in Lucerne, Switzerland,
designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and hewn in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn. It
commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French
Revolution, when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
• Mark Twain praised the sculpture of a mortally-wounded lion as "the most mournful
and moving piece of stone in the world.“
• The dying lion is portrayed impaled by a spear, covering a shield bearing the fleur-
de-lis of the French monarchy; beside him is another shield bearing the coat of arms
of Switzerland. The inscription below the sculpture lists the names of the officers and
gives the approximate numbers of soldiers who died (DCCLX = 760), and survived
(CCCL = 350)
• When Thorvaldsen learned he wasn’t going to be paid in full, the indignant artist
decided to get even and added some last minute changes to his sculpture. He didn’t
alter the sculpture itself, out of respect of the fallen soldiers. Instead he did
something.
• What did he do?

• Sueo Ōe and Shuhei Nishida were two Japanese
atheletes. They took part in Pole Vault in the 1936
Berlin Olympics.
• Both of them reached a height of 4.25 m making
them both tied for the 2nd and 3rd places. They
weren’t ready to take part in a tie-breaker.
• The Japanese team was told to make its own

who third. After lengthy discussion, it was agreed
that Nishida, who had vaulted 4.25 at his first
attempt, should take precedence over Oe, who had
needed two attempts at that height.
• But these two athletes went beyond to show the
importance of Friendship by doing something to
their medals. What did they do?
92.
93. ANSWER
Upon returning to Japan, they cut
their medals in half and fused
them to one another so each
athlete ended up with a half-silver,
half-bronze medal. They became
known as “The Medals of
Friendship”.
