Melanie Martinez Thesis
MELANIE MARTINEZ Finding someone to look up to is hard. They do something to make you
mad or they just seem to fade away as someone else comes along. I have seemed to find mine only
five months ago. Her name is Melanie Martinez, artist, singer and songwriter. The reason why I
have picked her, is because she unorthodox, insane and outgoing. After reading you will see my
reasons more than sane. Being Melanie Martinez requires you to be out of the ordinary, she is any
but normal. Her facial expressions and personality bring a new vibe. Her hair is a mix but, never one
color. She turns old songs and turns them to a new version. She's creative and impossibly
unpredictable. I would like say that I am sane. Normal would be anything but, Melanie.

Essay on Angels in America
Angels in America
The play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, by Tony Kushner, contained
situations in which characters' personalities underwent great changes from the beginning of the play
to the end. One of the most significant and noticeable changes was that of Harper. She was married
to the character named Joe, who she knew was gay and the way she dealt with this came to relate
directly to her own sanity. In part one, Harper spent a lot of time with her imaginary friend and
travel agent Mr. Lies. He was her escape mechanism from the horrible reality she could not deal
with that was her life. In part two, Harper came to grips with her husband's homosexuality and the
fact that she was not going to change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Stated as it is above, this notion makes sense. Harper knows that she is delusional and out of touch
with reality, but she is appreciating her current condition and taking it for everything it is worth. In
actuality, Harper is in a park in NYC, but in her dream world she is in a cold desolate place where it
is too cold for her feelings to bother her.
In part II, Perestroika, Harper begins to come back to reality. Part two starts off with her literally
trying to chop down a pine tree in Prospect Park by chewing on it. She is shocked back into reality
because her task is impossible by the means she is using. However, at this point in the play, she is
still not prepared mentally to deal with the events of her real life. Even though Harper is not
completely turned around yet, she has made progress from the beginning of the play. Now that
Harper is coming to grips with her marriage and her life as a whole, she is in the position to do
something about them. It is often said that the first step to recovering from something is realizing
and admitting that you have a problem. Harper knows that she is hallucinating and that her
dependency on Valium is bad for her mental and physical health, but she appreciates what the drug
is doing for her. The Harper of Part Two is at an advantage to the Harper of earlier acts in the play
because she is able to look at her situation from a rational point of view and see what is wrong with
it. Harper

Analysis Of The Poem ' Harlem ' By Langston Hughes
In the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes, Hughes discusses the fate of the American dream and
more specifically, he questions us about the destiny of the dream that never gets realized. He
wonders whether it explodes violently or if it just dries up. Forty years later, Tony Kushner explored
the fate of the suppressed, exploding dream in "Angels in America" through the character of Joseph
Porter Pitt as he struggles to cope with his own repressed, but surfacing homosexuality, while also
balancing societal and religious perspectives that restrain his true dreams. Furthermore, Joseph's
true self has been repressed deep into his mind and covered with conservative opinions, a fraudulent
marriage, and religious manipulation. All of which, are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Joseph's conservative shield serves as a layer of ignorance that blocks out the community in which
he truly belongs to, which is the homosexual community. His non–existent acknowledgement of the
struggle, fear and pain that the homosexual community was going through at the time is a
reinforcement of a falsified dream that Joseph has. Virtually, his cluelessness of the AIDS epidemic
means that he doesn't see himself at risk, he see's himself as pardoned from the tragedy as most
straight men did during that time. Additionally, the epidemic brought the homosexual community
together, and empowered them. Joseph, who I'm sure has heard of the epidemic before the play even
begins, doesn't feel a sense of connection to that community at all nor does he show any signs of
empathy. He is left out of the coming together of the homosexual community and doesn't care
because of his denial. Moreover, Joseph ignores that homosexuals exist and although he does not
completely deny the fact that he is gay in the play, he essentially ignores the reality of himself as a
gay man.
Also, Joseph's language with Harper is mostly centered around change, even though he has a
misperception about the world's current status, he is focused on making a change to his life. He
wants to move at the beginning, but only if Harper agrees to go with him. Joseph

Analysis Of Tony Kushner And Athol Fugard
Both Tony Kushner and Athol Fugard demonstrate the effects societal standards have on
individuality. Kushner's Angels in America focused on homosexuality and the AIDS crisis during
the Reagan Era, whereas Fugard's "Master Harold"...and the Boys concentrated on the issue of
racism taking place during the South African apartheid. Whether striving for a new identity or being
limited by one according to societal standards, all of the characters featured in these plays struggle
to come to terms with their true self. In this paper, I will explain the effects that stereotypes and
labels had on the growth, or lack thereof, of these individuals. A political call to arms for the age of
AIDS and homosexuality, Angels in America follows the lives of two very different, but equally
troubled couples: Jewish word processor Louis Ironson and his estranged lover, Prior Walter and
closeted gay Republican lawyer Joe Pitt and his attention seeking, Valium–addicted wife, Harper.
Louis leaves Prior after realizing that he cannot endure the pressure that comes along with being
someone's fulltime caretaker. Meanwhile, Joe grapples with the idea of moving to Washington after
receiving a new job offer whilst simultaneously dealing with his wife's drug addiction and his
homosexuality. Within those two pairs, each of the four individuals struggles to come to terms with
his or her true identity. As the play progresses, the couples ' lives become increasingly intertwined as
they search for ways to

Disney Essay
Colin Wells Sherry Minkowski Government 12 26 March 2000 Disney's Influence on American
Culture How does one begin to describe a king? As generations change, society calls for new
leaders and kings, that will continue to push the boundaries. Steven Watts describes it as:
Hollywood's leading fantasy factory... (187) Disney is much more prominent in society, its impact
now lives in every household, as well as a place in everyone's soul. Behind it all is a thriving
business that will out live most humans now and in the future. Steven Watts breaks it down quite
simply: Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck embodied a collective desire to escape the pressures of
modern life and return to childhood. (127) The escape from reality, which Disney has provided ...

Carl Hiaasen expresses the other side as well: Disney touches virtually every human being in
America for a profit.
That is rapidly becoming true as well in France, Spain, Germany, Japan, Great Britain, Australia,
China, Mexico, Brazil, and Canada. Disney will devour the world the same way it devoured this
country, starting first with the youth. Disney theme Wells 3 parks have drawn more than one billion
visitors, mostly kids. Snag the children and everyone else follows–––parents, politicians, even the
press. Especially the press. We're all suckers for a good cartoon.
(10–11) Not everyone on the planet wants G–rated fare. When Disney targets adult tastes, it's
careful to leave Walt's name off the credits. The same folks who brought you 101 Dalmatians, a
movie about adorable puppies, also brought you Pulp Fiction, a movie featuring junkies, hit men,
and bondage freaks. The same folks who produce Home Improvement, a program about a
wisecracking TV handyman, are also responsible for Ellen, a program about a wisecracking lesbian.
(11–12) If anything is more irresistible than Jesus, it's Mickey. (12) Corporations have always had a
dark side, just as Disney does.
Balance is needed in life; there is a downside to everything. Nothing, not even Disney can be
perfect. Disney benefits society far more than it harms it. The joy a child gets from seeing Peter Pan
flying over Neverland can't be bought, it is already inside,

Disney 's The Pastoral Symphony
Disney 's Fantasia (1940) lies in a class separate from all other animations of program music. While
its initial reception was less than stellar, it has since become a standard film in home collections.
Theatrical performances, games, and many other derivatives of the brand now exist. Despite this, it
has also generated a fair amount of controversy. For example, it contains scenes that allude to
Darwin's theory of evolution, and others that display negative racial stereotypes. Yet the most
controversial scene at the movie's premiere was the animation of Beethoven 's Sixth, the Pastoral
Symphony. This feature upset many classical music lovers who objected to the idea of giving
Beethoven's symphony an explicit storyline and a set of images that he did not have in mind. The
Pastoral Symphony is likely the most familiar example of program music, but most musicians and
critics seem to agree that this does not give a free pass to any form of interpretation. In the intro to
Fantasia, the narrator addresses this by cautioning the listener that the video clips were created
based on the musical interpretations of animators, not of trained musicians. From that cautionary
message to articles published as recently as this year, Fantasia remains a topic of controversy,
influenced by factors such as audience familiarity and general views on Beethoven himself. The
reach of this influence is not limited to reviews of the Pastoral Symphony feature, but rather extends
to the whole

‘After Midnight’ makes you feel as if you were living in...
'After Midnight' makes you feel as if you were living in Harlem during the 30s.
BY VANESSA FARIA
The by–gone era of 1920s and 30s, jam–packed with illicit alcohol, street cars and loud noises, are
often remembered as a time when music was more important than content. If that is true, then "After
Midnight" is definitely a product of its time.
After midnight is an effervescent new Lincoln center jazz venue performed at the Brooks Atkinson
Theatre. The production will mimic the highly acclaimed musical, Cotton Club Parade by inviting
special celebrities to take the stage, starring American idol winner Fantasia Barrino, Emmy nominee
Dulé Hill and Tony winner Adriane Lenox. It was an era when swing was big in Harlem, after
Midnight is a jazz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a present–day twist, everything about the plot and the characters has been recycled from the old
days. The performers are energetic and smiling all through the play and there are many things that
bring a smile to even the weariest faces, such as balloons, trumpets, tap dancers and a bit of
romantic comedy; it all creates stage magic. Another key component that adds a lot of character to
this modern spin of the Harlem Renaissance is the exceptional costumes by a Cuban designer, Isabel
Toledo; she found enough sparkle, feathers and beads to dress a flapper army.
Although the true stars of this play are the performers from the Jazz at Lincoln Center All–stars, it's
clear that the stage gets caught on fire when Fantasia Barrino performed "I Can't Give You Anything
but Love," her smooth yet fierce voice embraced Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh classic with
obvious fondness. Isabel Toledo evidently likes Fantasia's curvy body, designing to her a well
fitting, electric–blue, lampshade skirt. She also interacts with the public when she sang the lesser–
known "Zaz Zuh Zaz" (by Cab Calloway and Harry White), inviting the public to be a "part" of this
fantastic Jazz extravaganza.
It feels like the show, did not want to be seen as an old copy, and indeed, the tricks there are self–
explanatory. The notion of combining old school with today's era has an obvious effect of spicing up
the foundation. Yet, it does not eliminate the thought that the cast could've

How Does Donald Duck Lose Your Personality
Have you ever watched a cartoon or a show or even a movie and you see yourself in or through that
character ? I recently found myself watching the movie Aladdin with my little cousin. I saw how
Jasmine stood up for the poor kids in the village and also how she spoke her mind to her dad about
who she had to marry. I saw how we connected in some way and how I am a lot like her. There are
other characters who I am also like in other ways. The three fictional characters that most represent
my personality are Donald Duck for his short temper, Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls for her
sweetness, and Jasmine from Aladdin for her way of standing up for what's right and speaking her
mind no matter who she is against. Although Donald is a duck and a guy, we do have the common
aspect of losing our temper after being pushed to a certain point. In an episode on TV called Donald
Duck cured duck, Donald Duck loses his temper because he can't open the window and he starts
breaking plates and he even breaks through walls. Daisy Duck then tells him she won't go out on a
date with him until he cures his temper. Donald Ducks temper makes his friends not want to be
around him. Although his friends tend to have patience for him, in this episode Daisy Duck didn't
and she refused to go out with him because of his moodiness. Since Donald is very caring and
doesn't want to lose his friends he does what he can to keep his temper under control. Like Donald
Duck, I do control my temper, but after being pushed too far I tend to lose it. Although I do have a
lot of patience, when I do get pushed over the edge, I often get very moody. Usually when this
happens my family tries to leave me alone until I can calm down on my own. For example, one day
my parents and siblings had gone out to the store with my dad's side of the family. That day I wasn't
feeling very good so I was allowed to stay at home, but since I am the only one that is good with
children, they left all of their kids for me to take care of. I ended up having to take care of four three
year olds, two five year olds, and two six month old babies. After a couple of hours I felt
overwhelmed and all the kids were driving me crazy so, I called my parents screaming and yelling

Why Is Walt Disney Great Depression
Every child or adult can tell stories about their childhood cartoons. Looney toons to spongebob

factors contributed to why it did so well like the time it came out was in the great depression and

the years following the feminist and civil rights movements, the United States has undeniably
developed into the world's leading democratic system. Women and minorities have equal citizenship

References to primarily American popular culture and literature create a discourse investigating the
merits of our nation's development. Each text employs comedy at Sigmund Freud's tendentious level
of jest to challenge personal and social reticence without appearing antagonistic to any specific
group. The use of intertexuality condenses the length of the works and lends to the humor of the
subject matter by alluding to already familiar people, places, and events in American culture.
Without prior knowledge of such entities, most of the texts' meaning and wit will be lost.
Nevertheless, a complete understanding of such allusions will reveal the juxtaposition of America's
modern progression: society has improved in certain aspects, yet has somewhat been demoted in
other regards.
The long–established attraction of migrating to America is derived from its historic reputation as the
land of opportunity. The Statue of Liberty symbolizes the ability of the wretched refuse to surpass
birth and class distinctions through hard work and economy. But the overwhelming importance
placed on possessions as status symbols has gradually lost its allure. In Music For Torching, A.M.

The free enterprise system allows for business to create competition between themselves. Without

Fantasia Barrino personality development falls under the personality theorist by the name Karen

behaviors and attitudes toward oneself and others that express a person's needs (Duane &

Tony Kushner 's ' Angels '
In Angels in America, Tony Kushner's characters suffer through loss of health, life, and love.
Colossal suffering and grief eventually lead to discovery and growth. The main quartet of characters
– Louis Ironson, Prior Walter, Joe and Harper Pitt– have many differences, but, aside from their
grief, a common characteristic allows for their conjoined relevancy. Each is a member of a group
that is somehow marginalized in their society, whether it stems from their sexuality, illness, or
personal identity. Kushner's subtitle (A Gay Fantasia on National Themes) of the two–part play can
be interpreted as speaking to its fantastic elements, like the presence of Prior's angels and spirits

I refer to Louis, Prior, Joe, and Harper as the quartet characters because of the intertwining and
simultaneous similarities and dissimilarities of their stories. These elements create a melodic rhythm
in the plays narrative and dialogue, which resembles the "improvisatory style", that is necessary of
musical fantasias. Written in conversational language, none of the dialogue sounds rehearsed, but
rather like the characters are real people whose conversations were recorded by an eavesdropper.
The pages of the play read like an imitation of life, much like fantasias are imitations of melodies.
Each character has a different rhythm and style when they speak that creates quick–paced
communication, much like the harmonies in a musical piece. If "music appears to mimic some of
the features of language and to convey some of the same emotions that vocal communication does,"
then, transitively, language mimics features of music. Louis is the rambler of the symphony. Using
high–level vocabulary, he is often discussing profound ideas that other characters are not interested
in hearing. For example, after leaving Prior in the hospital room, Louis and Belize sit conversing in
a coffee shop. Louis tackles issues of race and democracy in America and England, until Belize

Tony Kushner 's Angels Of America
Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" and Mwaganu wa Kaggia's "Not Ashamed but so Ashamed"
both explicitly address the social, religious, and political stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and
homosexuality. The use of split scenes in "Angels in America" allows Kushner to demonstrate the
similar ways in which both Joe and Prior respond to alienation despite having distinct personal
conflicts. The two characters' societal and personal dilemmas are most evidently intertwined in Act
2, Scene 9 of the play. In a similar manner, by using repetition of the phrases "I'm HIV positive" and
"I am so ashamed", Kaggia's poem confronts the ironic notion that it is not the nature of illness that
causes suffering; rather it is the persistent stigmatization of HIV/AIDS that continuously impedes
any attempt to end this epidemic. The dramatic techniques shown in both texts are strategically used
by the authors to emphasize the influences that social, religious, and political stigmatization have on
individuals with HIV/AIDS and those openly disclosing their homosexuality.

Setting Good Examples
Gandhi! Martin Luther King! The first words to pop into your head might have been leader or role
model. These great men influenced nations by their good character and morals. Mayra Bitsko says
that "Being a good example is behaving in a positive manner." This is why setting a good example is
the best way to influence others. Setting a good example can create a new idea or outlook for
people. It creates a new idea/outlook by showing people what they can do better at. For example, the
Carly Fiorina "Beauty" commercial where she spun a negative comment by Trump into something
inspirational. Instead of Carly bashing Trump she did the right thing and created an influential
statement. Setting a good example can target youth and help them towards

Fantasia Movie Comparison
Absolute film was a movement created by a group of artists in Germany in the 1920's (Wikipedia).
Hans Richter, Walter Ruttman, Oskar Fischinger, and Viking Eggeling were the pioneers who
created absolute film, and all of them had artistic backgrounds besides Fischinger. Most cinematic
projects have a story line, and something you follow through, but with absolute film it is quite the
opposite. Absolute film depended solely on the artist's vision and imagination for the film. It was a
remarkable revolution in cinema, that a film could be created simply off a visual spectacle with aid
from auditory music. No story line, no characters, nothing... just random images, colors, shapes
flowing on the screen to music made to evoke imagination. Fantasia ... Show more content on

They can make it as simple and just colors flashing across the screen with no music, or as complex
as something as Fantasia. I think it's necessary because without it an expressional type of film
wouldn't exist, but I don't think filmmaking is dependent on absolute film. There were films before
absolute film and films after, but I do think it helped show a more creative side to cinema. It helped
aid in making history in cinema, and provided a different outlook to certain film features. Without
absolute film, so new film techniques might not have been discovered till way later, so I think
ultimately it helped grow the cinema field and knowledge. I am not sure why Walt Disney would
put an absolute film in a children's production. Even though Fantasia wasn't as weird as Mothlight, I
feel like children would have a hard time being interested in a film with no characters, or plot. On
the other hand, children do have short spans of attention, and sometimes can't understand difficult
story lines because of their age, so maybe this film would be interesting to them. I think Walt
Disney motivation to put an absolute film in a children's production was to simply spark

Tony Kushner's Angels In America
Published in May of 1991, Tony Kushner's gay fantasia on national themes, Angels In America, Part
One: Millennium Approaches, brought to light the brutality of the Reagan Administration as well as
the devastating AIDS epidemic during the 1980's. The play takes place in New York City during the
years of 1985 and 1986 and follows two couples – Louis Ironson and Prior Walter, and Joe and
Harper Pitt. While the main focus is on these two couples, there are various other characters that
come up throughout the play that hold great significance as well, such as Roy Cohn, Belize, Hannah
Pitt, Mr. Lies, and, mostly importantly, The Angel. With these characters, Kushner accurately
portrays the struggles of the 80's with homosesxuality, the realisation ... Show more content on

The Function of Dual Roles in Tony Kushner’s Angels in...
In Tony Kushner's Angels in America, the interconnection of people and events, that might
ordinarily be viewed as disconnected or unrelated, is implicitly presented in the characters section.
Dual roles are implemented by a playwright that has one actor portraying the roles of two or more
characters, with or without thematic intentions. The use of "dual roles" in several scenes of this play
can be viewed as a demonstration of Kushner's effort in maintaining the interconnectedness between
characters, communities (i.e. queer, heterosexual, AIDS and political communities) and events to
which they are relative. This essay will argue that Kushner's use of dual role's effectively
interconnects characters, events and their communities that may ... Show more content on

Furthermore, Antarctica's expression and connection to Roy's character and communities is
supported within the dialogue. In response to hearing the description of destruction and loss of life
on the radio, Antarctica responds by saying, "Let them. Uncountable multitudes. Horrible. It is by
their own hands. I I I will rejoice to see it " (Kushner 261). Explicitly Antarctica's responses
implicitly parallels Roy's callous nature, perhaps as a specific reference to Roy's outlook on the
AIDS community in which he is a part of but denies. This response is significant because it
preserves the audiences prior knowledge of Roy and what he stands even contextually as Antarctica.
As a result, the use of dual role to interrelate Roy's denial and lack of morality is able to
interconnect and expose Roy's stance in relation to AIDS even as the unrelated character of
Antarctica. The dual role of "The Angel of Oceania" and Belize is another example of Kushner's
ability to sustain interconnectedness between characters and events. Principally, Oceania seems to
be a caring and warm character much like Belize, but Belize is also comprised of many interesting
communities such as being homosexual and being a black, male nurse. This collection of
communities figuratively represents the separate islands that compose Oceania suggesting an
implicit correlation in character choice.

Women In Ballet Essay examples
Ballet is an art form born out of the expressionism and creativity of the Renaissance period (Kraus
63). From the first ballet performed in 1580 to the present, women have been portrayed as fragile
and dependent on men. One such ballet is The Nutcracker in which the girl–heroine Clara relies on
the Nutcracker to save her from the evil Mouse King.
The first production of The Nutcracker was performed for critics, public figures, and members of
high society and received lack luster reviews on December 17, 1892 (Anderson 40–52). The story
opens in the parlor of a middle–class German family, the Stahlbaums, during a party on Christmas

A flower garden also waltzes for the children, and the most impressive dance is that for the
Sugarplum fairy and her Prince. When the party comes to an end, Clara is whisked back home
(Anderson 9–13).
There are various ways in which The Nutcracker displays what is believed to be a woman's place in
society. Through the children's actions, one is able to see a clear distinction between male and
female gender rolls. Clara is a sweet and innocent girl, and her brother, Fritz, is a scamp always
causing trouble (Anderson 9). Clara is shown a world in which girls play with dolls and learn to be
nurturing mothers and boys train to be brave soldiers. Throughout the party scene Clara holds and
cares for her Nutcracker as if it were a baby. The Nutcracker also displays a woman's dependence on
a man. Clara must rely on the Nutcracker Prince to save her from the Mouse King. She can throw
her slipper to distract the evil Mouse King, but it is the Nutcracker who gives the Mouse King a
mortal wound (Banes 60).
Ultimately, The Nutcracker is Clara's girlhood dream of love and marriage. In the Land of Sweets,
Clara is finally able to be with her prince and with shining eyes adores him (Balanchine 249–253).
The Nutcracker also restores the ideal that marriage for gentry women is sweet, pleasant, and
fulfilling. In the metaphoric wedding feast in Act II, Clara is calm and docile watching the various
antics, but not participating, which also represents a

Rogoff's "Angels in America, Devils in the Wings" is an article that's decidedly critical of the
Broadway production of Tony Kushner's Angels in America: Millennium Approaches. He begins his
critique with "as one who lives a life rather than a 'lifestyle,' I'm not sure what a gay play, let alone a
gay fantasia might be" (21). As one who lives a life rather than a "lifestyle" myself, I find this
opening to the essay to conjure linguistic maneuvers of the conservative right used to dismiss the
grievances of gay men. While I may be going out on a limb in this analysis, most often the binary
"life vs. lifestyle" is code for "heterosexual vs. homosexual"–in short, gays and lesbians don't live
lives but rather we live lifestyles. Ours are mockeries of "real" lives, thus requiring the supplemental
"–style." Rogoff is "not sure what a gay play...might be." In truth, this is no easy question, and there
are no easy answers to it. Are the plays of Tennessee Williams, such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and
The Glass Menagerie gay plays, since the author was gay? Or do only his later works qualify as gay
plays, as they focused specifically on gay material? Are any of the plays of William Shakespeare

Fallen Angels in America Tony Kushner's play Angels in America was set in the 1980s, amid
Ronald Reagan's administration. Many people believe that this play is political, since we hear a
significant amount about Reagan. Additionally, his administration has been largely criticized for its
negligence toward the AIDS crisis. Furthermore, numerous LGBT activists have blamed Reagan for
overlooking the epidemic since it was thought to be, for the most part, a disease that primarily
affected gay men and, perhaps not surprising, African Americans. Although, Tony Kushner's Angels

Consequently, for reasons unknown, a great deal. One fascinating association between these two
characters is the way they are both attached to the topic of "Renditions of Reality." Throughout the

Society has a rule book, it lists how we should act and think and be. Some people decide to

Walt Disney was a producer of motion–pictures and television shows. He was a showman and is

Musical Analysis Of Fantasia
is the animated musical sequel to its originator in 1940, Fantasia. It was released in December of
1999 and was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and Walt Disney Pictures. Walt Disney's
brother, Roy E. Disney was the helm of producing it and so was Donald W. Ernst, who co–produced
it. The movie includes many celebrities that introduced the live action parts with the classical music
counterpart. It took many, many years to get the approval to make the sequel and it did really well in
the box office. But the more important part from this movie is the music behind it, the music really
goes along with all seven of the segments shown and they all have an art style behind it.
The orchestra behind the film was performed by Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was conducted
by James Levine. The movie contains seven segments and has an important musical piece behind it,
which they are written by somebody significant in the classical music world. Fantasia 2000 opens
with the most famous concert music of all, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor. Following the
first film in 1940, this first segment follows abstract images that form the ideas of the heavens,
butterflies, bats, and darkness. The second sequence is "Pines of Rome" by Ottorino Respighi,
which follows the journey of humpback whale calf as it learns to fly (only because of a supernova).

From The Plains And The City
From the Plains to the City The depth of a play comes largely from its context and how the piece
intertwines with the environment in which it takes place. All tragedies take a direct impact by their
setting, which inconspicuously performs a significant role in the compositions. In Tracy Letts'
August: Osage County, the Weston family must confront their past and present in a claustrophobic
house during the scorching heat of summer in the Oklahoman Plains. In Tony Kushner's Angles in
America, the AIDS epidemic is rampant and the effects are seen across all spectrums in the
American society, while keeping up with the fast pace and intricacies of New York City. Essentially
location influences the plays, which steers them thematically and stylistically. Letts slowly builds a
dismal atmosphere in the confinement of a household that correlates to the bleakness of the Plains
while Kushner creates a melting pot of political, social, and religious criticism in an action packed
drama in a bustling city. The prologue of August: Osage County is in charge of setting the somber
mood for the play. On the outskirts of the small town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma is where the Weston
family reluctantly reunites after the death of its patriarch, Beverly. The house is depicted as more
than a century old, showing signs of neglect that make it appear stuck in time. Letts describes the
premise as a hoarder's paradise, scattered with books, papers, and random paraphernalia. The

the first movie to connect classical music with animations. Directed by James Algar and released in
1940, this movie was the first of its kind, using classical music and creating scenes with animations

other segments in Fantasia had the music created for the animation, the music was there first and
then created the animations based off of the music. Throughout the creation of this film, there were
over 700 animators that worked closely with director, James Algar to make sure every detail of the
animations were perfect. These animations were extraordinarily precise as objects came to life or
moved on the exact beats going along with the music. It simply takes the audience into a magical
world of what is going on throughout the segments whether it be with spirits or dinosaurs. Starting
out as a failure after being released and barely making any money, this movie is one of a kind as it
rose to fame and reached its peak as the 22nd most grossing film. Fantasia was the result of many

Angels in America, by Tony Kushner, is an all–encompassing play designed to tackle the atrocities

In fact, during the early days of the first play at the Eureka Theatre, Kushner wrote up 700 pages of
Perestroika. Stating his reason, Kushner believed that "nobody ever has to know what [he's] done

play as much as possible, he must write and re–write the play over and over to find the best version
to fit with what he is trying to convey. Moreover, after the Eureka Theatre couldn't financially
sustain the development of the play, Kushner moved his work in process of a play to the Royal

Essay on Never Giving Up
It has been said that life can never be carried out and truly lived to its fullest unless there has been
some sort of suffering and pain. Mistakes are to be learned from, and a hard past can only result in a
stronger present. Though many might find themselves alone in their misery the truth is they are not,
everyone has struggles. We all have our ups and downs, but it is how we react to them that truly
matters. Life is life and no matter what, giving up on lifelong dreams and aspirations because of a

celebrities that can overcome a troubled past and live up to their potential it is also people just like

Joe has work hard and done everything right to get to where he is now but isn't happy because he
feels like he is missing something. Joe has a battle with himself over the wrong that's inside; "no
matter how wrong or ugly that thing is, so long as I fought, with everything I have to kill it... As
long as my behavior is what I know it has to be" (Angels in America pg. 40). Kushner's choice of
words for Joe seem to suggest that he is fighting the "wrong" inside him but only because thats what
these religious ideals dictate he should do. Joe seems to be hiding the fact that he is a homosexual,
we see this when his wife Harper asks him and he responds; "What if I... No. I'm not. I don't see
what difference it makes" (Angels in America pg. 38). This is an example of how religious ideals
bring difficulties not only in how a person lives but also their sexuality.
Kushner also prompts the consideration of having personal highly desirable goals. He introduces
such standards with another character called Roy Cohn who has achieved a great deal of power by
focusing on himself alone; "don't be afraid to live in the raw wind, naked, alone... Learn at least this:

Animation is the specialty of making images seem to move. Animation is a masterful motivation
that long originates before the motion pictures. Animation is the procedure of making a
development, deception and movement by quick of presentation the scene or grouping of static
picture negligibly vary from each other. Activity can be recorded with other media, for example, flip

Realism In Tony Kushner's Angels In America
Angels in America: Millennium Approaches by Tony Kushner can be conventionally defined as a
work of Theatricalism. Breaking the preconceived notions of theatre such as gender casting, fluent
scenes, and varying extremes ranging from characters, to visuals, to the introduction of historical
figures. However, the work strikes a note of realism. We find ourselves encompassed by passionate
actors sharing real emotions with us, scenes based in historical events, and characters placed in
events that we then find to be our own realities. While we find our realities to be true–and
heightened by those in the work–could it be possible that some of these characters' realities are in
fact false, or being defined by the theatricality that surrounds them? Harper serves as an emotionally
charged wife to Joe, who questions not only his sexuality, but her purpose as a wife. A close read of
the play begs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Kushner) and a bit later when she is in this place, "I... Feel better. There are ice crystals in my lungs,
wonderful and sharp." (3.3 p105 Kushner) We see that for Harper being away from Joe results in
distance and the loss of warmth, which we normally relate to death. She has died, a part of Joe has
died. What can help to reaffirm her as Joe's moral guide, or compass is that shortly after we see
Harper in her "cold place" Joe commits what we know to be his first sexual act with a man. His
values have died. (3.7 p121 Kushner) Within in her cold place Harper further has the ability to
create it's bounds and limitations, which is unique and signifies that she is other worldly. While
Mr.Lies tells her they are in Antarctica, she constantly defies what he states to be facts, what she
says becomes the reality of the place. Something that no other character in the play has yet to do.

Melanie Martinez Thesis

  • 1. Melanie Martinez Thesis MELANIE MARTINEZ Finding someone to look up to is hard. They do something to make you mad or they just seem to fade away as someone else comes along. I have seemed to find mine only five months ago. Her name is Melanie Martinez, artist, singer and songwriter. The reason why I have picked her, is because she unorthodox, insane and outgoing. After reading you will see my reasons more than sane. Being Melanie Martinez requires you to be out of the ordinary, she is any but normal. Her facial expressions and personality bring a new vibe. Her hair is a mix but, never one color. She turns old songs and turns them to a new version. She's creative and impossibly unpredictable. I would like say that I am sane. Normal would be anything but, Melanie. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay on Angels in America Angels in America The play Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, by Tony Kushner, contained situations in which characters' personalities underwent great changes from the beginning of the play to the end. One of the most significant and noticeable changes was that of Harper. She was married to the character named Joe, who she knew was gay and the way she dealt with this came to relate directly to her own sanity. In part one, Harper spent a lot of time with her imaginary friend and travel agent Mr. Lies. He was her escape mechanism from the horrible reality she could not deal with that was her life. In part two, Harper came to grips with her husband's homosexuality and the fact that she was not going to change ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stated as it is above, this notion makes sense. Harper knows that she is delusional and out of touch with reality, but she is appreciating her current condition and taking it for everything it is worth. In actuality, Harper is in a park in NYC, but in her dream world she is in a cold desolate place where it is too cold for her feelings to bother her. In part II, Perestroika, Harper begins to come back to reality. Part two starts off with her literally trying to chop down a pine tree in Prospect Park by chewing on it. She is shocked back into reality because her task is impossible by the means she is using. However, at this point in the play, she is still not prepared mentally to deal with the events of her real life. Even though Harper is not completely turned around yet, she has made progress from the beginning of the play. Now that Harper is coming to grips with her marriage and her life as a whole, she is in the position to do something about them. It is often said that the first step to recovering from something is realizing and admitting that you have a problem. Harper knows that she is hallucinating and that her dependency on Valium is bad for her mental and physical health, but she appreciates what the drug is doing for her. The Harper of Part Two is at an advantage to the Harper of earlier acts in the play because she is able to look at her situation from a rational point of view and see what is wrong with it. • 3. Analysis Of The Poem ' Harlem ' By Langston Hughes In the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes, Hughes discusses the fate of the American dream and more specifically, he questions us about the destiny of the dream that never gets realized. He wonders whether it explodes violently or if it just dries up. Forty years later, Tony Kushner explored the fate of the suppressed, exploding dream in "Angels in America" through the character of Joseph Porter Pitt as he struggles to cope with his own repressed, but surfacing homosexuality, while also balancing societal and religious perspectives that restrain his true dreams. Furthermore, Joseph's true self has been repressed deep into his mind and covered with conservative opinions, a fraudulent marriage, and religious manipulation. All of which, are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Joseph's conservative shield serves as a layer of ignorance that blocks out the community in which he truly belongs to, which is the homosexual community. His non–existent acknowledgement of the struggle, fear and pain that the homosexual community was going through at the time is a reinforcement of a falsified dream that Joseph has. Virtually, his cluelessness of the AIDS epidemic means that he doesn't see himself at risk, he see's himself as pardoned from the tragedy as most straight men did during that time. Additionally, the epidemic brought the homosexual community together, and empowered them. Joseph, who I'm sure has heard of the epidemic before the play even begins, doesn't feel a sense of connection to that community at all nor does he show any signs of empathy. He is left out of the coming together of the homosexual community and doesn't care because of his denial. Moreover, Joseph ignores that homosexuals exist and although he does not completely deny the fact that he is gay in the play, he essentially ignores the reality of himself as a gay man. Also, Joseph's language with Harper is mostly centered around change, even though he has a misperception about the world's current status, he is focused on making a change to his life. He wants to move at the beginning, but only if Harper agrees to go with him. Joseph ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of Tony Kushner And Athol Fugard Both Tony Kushner and Athol Fugard demonstrate the effects societal standards have on individuality. Kushner's Angels in America focused on homosexuality and the AIDS crisis during the Reagan Era, whereas Fugard's "Master Harold"...and the Boys concentrated on the issue of racism taking place during the South African apartheid. Whether striving for a new identity or being limited by one according to societal standards, all of the characters featured in these plays struggle to come to terms with their true self. In this paper, I will explain the effects that stereotypes and labels had on the growth, or lack thereof, of these individuals. A political call to arms for the age of AIDS and homosexuality, Angels in America follows the lives of two very different, but equally troubled couples: Jewish word processor Louis Ironson and his estranged lover, Prior Walter and closeted gay Republican lawyer Joe Pitt and his attention seeking, Valium–addicted wife, Harper. Louis leaves Prior after realizing that he cannot endure the pressure that comes along with being someone's fulltime caretaker. Meanwhile, Joe grapples with the idea of moving to Washington after receiving a new job offer whilst simultaneously dealing with his wife's drug addiction and his homosexuality. Within those two pairs, each of the four individuals struggles to come to terms with his or her true identity. As the play progresses, the couples ' lives become increasingly intertwined as they search for ways to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Disney 's The Pastoral Symphony Disney 's Fantasia (1940) lies in a class separate from all other animations of program music. While its initial reception was less than stellar, it has since become a standard film in home collections. Theatrical performances, games, and many other derivatives of the brand now exist. Despite this, it has also generated a fair amount of controversy. For example, it contains scenes that allude to Darwin's theory of evolution, and others that display negative racial stereotypes. Yet the most controversial scene at the movie's premiere was the animation of Beethoven 's Sixth, the Pastoral Symphony. This feature upset many classical music lovers who objected to the idea of giving Beethoven's symphony an explicit storyline and a set of images that he did not have in mind. The Pastoral Symphony is likely the most familiar example of program music, but most musicians and critics seem to agree that this does not give a free pass to any form of interpretation. In the intro to Fantasia, the narrator addresses this by cautioning the listener that the video clips were created based on the musical interpretations of animators, not of trained musicians. From that cautionary message to articles published as recently as this year, Fantasia remains a topic of controversy, influenced by factors such as audience familiarity and general views on Beethoven himself. The reach of this influence is not limited to reviews of the Pastoral Symphony feature, but rather extends to the whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. ‘After Midnight’ makes you feel as if you were living in... 'After Midnight' makes you feel as if you were living in Harlem during the 30s. BY VANESSA FARIA The by–gone era of 1920s and 30s, jam–packed with illicit alcohol, street cars and loud noises, are often remembered as a time when music was more important than content. If that is true, then "After Midnight" is definitely a product of its time. After midnight is an effervescent new Lincoln center jazz venue performed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The production will mimic the highly acclaimed musical, Cotton Club Parade by inviting special celebrities to take the stage, starring American idol winner Fantasia Barrino, Emmy nominee Dulé Hill and Tony winner Adriane Lenox. It was an era when swing was big in Harlem, after Midnight is a jazz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a present–day twist, everything about the plot and the characters has been recycled from the old days. The performers are energetic and smiling all through the play and there are many things that bring a smile to even the weariest faces, such as balloons, trumpets, tap dancers and a bit of romantic comedy; it all creates stage magic. Another key component that adds a lot of character to this modern spin of the Harlem Renaissance is the exceptional costumes by a Cuban designer, Isabel Toledo; she found enough sparkle, feathers and beads to dress a flapper army. Although the true stars of this play are the performers from the Jazz at Lincoln Center All–stars, it's clear that the stage gets caught on fire when Fantasia Barrino performed "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," her smooth yet fierce voice embraced Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh classic with obvious fondness. Isabel Toledo evidently likes Fantasia's curvy body, designing to her a well fitting, electric–blue, lampshade skirt. She also interacts with the public when she sang the lesser– known "Zaz Zuh Zaz" (by Cab Calloway and Harry White), inviting the public to be a "part" of this fantastic Jazz extravaganza. It feels like the show, did not want to be seen as an old copy, and indeed, the tricks there are self– explanatory. The notion of combining old school with today's era has an obvious effect of spicing up the foundation. Yet, it does not eliminate the thought that the cast could've ... • 10. How Does Donald Duck Lose Your Personality Have you ever watched a cartoon or a show or even a movie and you see yourself in or through that character ? I recently found myself watching the movie Aladdin with my little cousin. I saw how Jasmine stood up for the poor kids in the village and also how she spoke her mind to her dad about who she had to marry. I saw how we connected in some way and how I am a lot like her. There are other characters who I am also like in other ways. The three fictional characters that most represent my personality are Donald Duck for his short temper, Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls for her sweetness, and Jasmine from Aladdin for her way of standing up for what's right and speaking her mind no matter who she is against. Although Donald is a duck and a guy, we do have the common aspect of losing our temper after being pushed to a certain point. In an episode on TV called Donald Duck cured duck, Donald Duck loses his temper because he can't open the window and he starts breaking plates and he even breaks through walls. Daisy Duck then tells him she won't go out on a date with him until he cures his temper. Donald Ducks temper makes his friends not want to be around him. Although his friends tend to have patience for him, in this episode Daisy Duck didn't and she refused to go out with him because of his moodiness. Since Donald is very caring and doesn't want to lose his friends he does what he can to keep his temper under control. Like Donald Duck, I do control my temper, but after being pushed too far I tend to lose it. Although I do have a lot of patience, when I do get pushed over the edge, I often get very moody. Usually when this happens my family tries to leave me alone until I can calm down on my own. For example, one day my parents and siblings had gone out to the store with my dad's side of the family. That day I wasn't feeling very good so I was allowed to stay at home, but since I am the only one that is good with children, they left all of their kids for me to take care of. I ended up having to take care of four three year olds, two five year olds, and two six month old babies. After a couple of hours I felt overwhelmed and all the kids were driving me crazy so, I called my parents screaming and yelling at them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main quartet of characters – Louis Ironson, Prior Walter, Joe and Harper Pitt– have many differences, but, aside from their grief, a common characteristic allows for their conjoined relevancy. Each is a member of a group that is somehow marginalized in their society, whether it stems from their sexuality, illness, or personal identity. I refer to Louis, Prior, Joe, and Harper as the quartet characters because of the intertwining and simultaneous similarities and dissimilarities of their stories. These elements create a melodic rhythm in the plays narrative and dialogue, which resembles the "improvisatory style", that is necessary of musical fantasias. Written in conversational language, none of the dialogue sounds rehearsed, but rather like the characters are real people whose conversations were recorded by an eavesdropper. The pages of the play read like an imitation of life, much like fantasias are imitations of melodies. Each character has a different rhythm and style when they speak that creates quick–paced communication, much like the harmonies in a musical piece. If "music appears to mimic some of the features of language and to convey some of the same emotions that vocal communication does," then, transitively, language mimics features of music. Louis is the rambler of the symphony. Using high–level vocabulary, he is often discussing profound ideas that other characters are not interested in hearing. • 19. Tony Kushner 's Angels Of America Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" and Mwaganu wa Kaggia's "Not Ashamed but so Ashamed" both explicitly address the social, religious, and political stigma associated with HIV/AIDS and homosexuality. The use of split scenes in "Angels in America" allows Kushner to demonstrate the similar ways in which both Joe and Prior respond to alienation despite having distinct personal conflicts. The two characters' societal and personal dilemmas are most evidently intertwined in Act 2, Scene 9 of the play. In a similar manner, by using repetition of the phrases "I'm HIV positive" and "I am so ashamed", Kaggia's poem confronts the ironic notion that it is not the nature of illness that causes suffering; rather it is the persistent stigmatization of HIV/AIDS that continuously impedes any attempt to end this epidemic. The dramatic techniques shown in both texts are strategically used by the authors to emphasize the influences that social, religious, and political stigmatization have on individuals with HIV/AIDS and those openly disclosing their homosexuality. Compared to other split scenes in "Angels in America", Act 2, Scene 9 is furiously explosive as both Joe and Prior simultaneously confront their partners with their personal dilemmas. During Joe's encounter with Harper, he struggles to identify himself as a homosexual. Joe reveals lack of confidence in his self–identity when he says to Harper: "You want the truth. Most cinematic projects have a story line, and something you follow through, but with absolute film it is quite the opposite. Absolute film depended solely on the artist's vision and imagination for the film. Dual roles are implemented by a playwright that has one actor portraying the roles of two or more characters, with or without thematic intentions. The use of "dual roles" in several scenes of this play can be viewed as a demonstration of Kushner's effort in maintaining the interconnectedness between characters, communities (i.e. queer, heterosexual, AIDS and political communities) and events to which they are relative. I I I will rejoice to see it " (Kushner 261). Explicitly Antarctica's responses implicitly parallels Roy's callous nature, perhaps as a specific reference to Roy's outlook on the AIDS community in which he is a part of but denies. This response is significant because it preserves the audiences prior knowledge of Roy and what he stands even contextually as Antarctica. As a result, the use of dual role to interrelate Roy's denial and lack of morality is able to interconnect and expose Roy's stance in relation to AIDS even as the unrelated character of Antarctica. The dual role of "The Angel of Oceania" and Belize is another example of Kushner's ability to sustain interconnectedness between characters and events. Principally, Oceania seems to be a caring and warm character much like Belize, but Belize is also comprised of many interesting communities such as being homosexual and being a black, male nurse. He was a showman and is famously known as a pioneer of animated films and the creator of "The Happiest Place on Earth," Disneyland. Walt also attended night classes at the Chicago Art Institute just before he dropped out at the age of 16 to join the army. He was rejected from the U.S Army for being underage and instead joined the Red Cross. Walt lived in France for a year working as an ambulance driver, until he moved back to the states in 1919 at the age of 18. Shortly after, Walt got his very first job as a draftsman, at a Kansas City art studio where he met other very talented animators and began his life as an entrepreneur of many kinds. With his fellow artists in Kansas City Walt began his long endeavour into the art of production. Working with his brother Roy and a few others Walt worked his way to his dream, and in 1923 he was able to set up his studio in Hollywood where his first famous cartoons were produced. Walter and his partners had previously aired their cartoons dubbed Laugh–O–Grams which were wildly popular and after they created a series of seven–minute fairy tales that combined live action and animation. Out of their studio in Hollywood, also known as the "Disney Brothers' Studio", came incredible characters such as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit who was famously feuded over by the brothers and caused their famous split. • 29. Musical Analysis Of Fantasia is the animated musical sequel to its originator in 1940, Fantasia. It was released in December of 1999 and was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and Walt Disney Pictures. Walt Disney's brother, Roy E. Disney was the helm of producing it and so was Donald W. Ernst, who co–produced it. The movie includes many celebrities that introduced the live action parts with the classical music counterpart. It took many, many years to get the approval to make the sequel and it did really well in the box office. But the more important part from this movie is the music behind it, the music really goes along with all seven of the segments shown and they all have an art style behind it. The orchestra behind the film was performed by Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by James Levine. The movie contains seven segments and has an important musical piece behind it, which they are written by somebody significant in the classical music world. Fantasia 2000 opens with the most famous concert music of all, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor. Following the first film in 1940, this first segment follows abstract images that form the ideas of the heavens, butterflies, bats, and darkness. The second sequence is "Pines of Rome" by Ottorino Respighi, which follows the journey of humpback whale calf as it learns to fly (only because of a supernova). The whale is separated from its parents, but manages to reunite with the entire school, that ends up coming through the fluffy clouds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. From The Plains And The City From the Plains to the City The depth of a play comes largely from its context and how the piece intertwines with the environment in which it takes place. All tragedies take a direct impact by their setting, which inconspicuously performs a significant role in the compositions. In Tracy Letts' August: Osage County, the Weston family must confront their past and present in a claustrophobic house during the scorching heat of summer in the Oklahoman Plains. In Tony Kushner's Angles in America, the AIDS epidemic is rampant and the effects are seen across all spectrums in the American society, while keeping up with the fast pace and intricacies of New York City. Essentially location influences the plays, which steers them thematically and stylistically. Letts slowly builds a dismal atmosphere in the confinement of a household that correlates to the bleakness of the Plains while Kushner creates a melting pot of political, social, and religious criticism in an action packed drama in a bustling city. The prologue of August: Osage County is in charge of setting the somber mood for the play. On the outskirts of the small town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma is where the Weston family reluctantly reunites after the death of its patriarch, Beverly. The house is depicted as more than a century old, showing signs of neglect that make it appear stuck in time. Letts describes the premise as a hoarder's paradise, scattered with books, papers, and random paraphernalia. The windows have been covered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. The Musical Segments Of The Film ' Snow White And The... There have been many animated movies that were very popular during the 1940's and 50's. Some are still watched and have been recreated in today's times: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Dumbo. Although not the first animated movie to be created, Fantasia (1940) was the first movie to connect classical music with animations. Directed by James Algar and released in 1940, this movie was the first of its kind, using classical music and creating scenes with animations around that music or vice versa. This movie contains eight musical segments all narrated by Deems Taylor with different music and animations like Mickey Mouse, fairies, flowers, dinosaurs, figures from mythology, animals, and spirits for each of the scenes. "As a matter of fact, in this case the story came first...and the composer wrote the music to go with it." (Grant). In contrast to what Joe Grant wrote, none of the other segments in Fantasia had the music created for the animation, the music was there first and then created the animations based off of the music. Throughout the creation of this film, there were over 700 animators that worked closely with director, James Algar to make sure every detail of the animations were perfect. These animations were extraordinarily precise as objects came to life or moved on the exact beats going along with the music. It simply takes the audience into a magical world of what is going on throughout the segments whether it be with spirits or dinosaurs. Starting out as a failure after being released and barely making any money, this movie is one of a kind as it rose to fame and reached its peak as the 22nd most grossing film. Fantasia was the result of many great relationships and collaborations in the Disney film industry, between the animators, composers, musicians, producers, and directors. Tony Kushner's Angels In America Angels in America, by Tony Kushner, is an all–encompassing play designed to tackle the atrocities and devastation of the AIDS epidemic and the mainstream societal marginalization of the Gay community. What makes Angels in America such an iconic and memorable play is its ability to highlight cultural issues faced by the Gay community that are ignored by the geopolitical landscape of 1980's American culture. Unlike any other play previously, Angels tackles themes of Reagan Era conservatism, homosexuality and the ignored AIDS epidemic, isolation, and religion in America. Moreover, after the Eureka Theatre couldn't financially sustain the development of the play, Kushner moved his work in process of a play to the Royal National Theatre in London. It was here that thousands of remakes were called in, angering the director. During the same period, Kushner also cast his play in Los Angles at the Mark Taper Forum. It was during this time that the play truly was refined. According to Oskar Eustis, the director for the Los Angeles theatre, Kusher "took the difficulty of making these characters change, and he made it the content of the play" (Slate 8). Many people today have a set of religious or personal standards that has aided them in obtaining their goals. However, there are many others who do their best to live up to those standards of perfection but end up living miserable lives. This essay will discuss the possible standards of Joe and Roy implied in the play, "Angels in America" by Tony Kushner, while discussing how they can be both valuable and questionable. As long as my behavior is what I know it has to be" (Angels in America pg. 40). Kushner's choice of words for Joe seem to suggest that he is fighting the "wrong" inside him but only because thats what these religious ideals dictate he should do. Joe seems to be hiding the fact that he is a homosexual, we see this when his wife Harper asks him and he responds; "What if I... No. I'm not. I don't see what difference it makes" (Angels in America pg. 38). This is an example of how religious ideals bring difficulties not only in how a person lives but also their sexuality. Kushner also prompts the consideration of having personal highly desirable goals. He introduces such standards with another character called Roy Cohn who has achieved a great deal of power by focusing on himself alone; "don't be afraid to live in the raw wind, naked, alone... • 40. Realism In Tony Kushner's Angels In America Angels in America: Millennium Approaches by Tony Kushner can be conventionally defined as a work of Theatricalism. Breaking the preconceived notions of theatre such as gender casting, fluent scenes, and varying extremes ranging from characters, to visuals, to the introduction of historical figures. However, the work strikes a note of realism. We find ourselves encompassed by passionate actors sharing real emotions with us, scenes based in historical events, and characters placed in events that we then find to be our own realities. While we find our realities to be true–and heightened by those in the work–could it be possible that some of these characters' realities are in fact false, or being defined by the theatricality that surrounds them?
