concerned with how information spreads and influences politics, policy makers, the news

Whether the relationship is formed by the modes of persuasion, Pathos, Ethos or Logos.
From Aristotelian retorica to freedom of speech for media or press.

The field of political communication is focused on 4 main
areas:
● Election campaigns - Political communications
involved in campaigning for elections.
● Government operations - This role is usually fulfilled
by a Ministry of Communications, Information
Technology or similar political entity. Such an entity is
in charge of maintaining communication legislation
and would be responsible for setting
telecommunications policy and regulations as well as
issuing broadcasting licenses, comments press
releases, etc.
● Media content - The interaction between politics,
media content and the public.
● Communication processes - How people
communicate about politics.

● The relationship between Economics and Communication Studies is closely
related.
● This is because in studying the economics of communication science as a
driving force for a transaction.
● In addition, communication science in the economy also acts as a tool in
business.

12. The Definition
Technological determinism is the idea that technology shapes social change.
It determines our future.
The term ‘technological determinism’ was coined by Thorstein Veblen and this theory revolves around the
proposition that technology in any given society defines its nature. Technology is viewed as the driving force of
culture in a society and it determines its course of history.

Determinism
1. The Invention of Writing
Walter J. Ong (1982) argued that writing fundamentally changed human society forever, allowing it to break free from
the limits imposed by the oral transmission of knowledge.
2. Gunpowder Empires
These empires flourished between the 14th and 18th centuries on account of being early adopters of
gunpowder-based artilleries. This gave them greater military might and control over their own vast territories.
3. The Internet
The internet and the microprocessor-based computer are the most disruptive technologies that have revolutionized
the human experience on earth in the past century.

Determinism
1. Normative form.
○ It’s efficiently emphasizes on rationality, and productivity of technology development in the
society.
2. Constructed socially, cultural, history, social, and other contextual factors.
3. Technological Drift.
○ Changes in technology sometimes had unintended or unexpected results and effects as well.
Technology is not the slave of the human being but rather humans are slaves to technology as
they are forced to adapt to the technological environment that surrounds them (Winner, 1986)

the Media
New media are not only an addition to existing media, they are also new technologies and therefore do
have a deterministic factor as well.
Marshall McLuhan (Griffin, 2005) made a famous statement that “the medium is the message.”
This means that the medium used to communicate influences the mind of the receiver.
The introduction of news print, television and the internet have all shown how technological advances
have an impact on the society in which we live in.

Why is it Important?
The media industry is an important stakeholder and includes firms that
specialize in broadcast content and delivery, including print, Internet,
television, radio, and direct mail. In addition, the media helps shape consumer
attitudes toward business.

Activities Cycle
1. The production activities of the media industry produce services in the form of
information whose value is measured by added value which is triggered and driven
by consumption needs
2. Consumption or the public's need for information services to be produced by the
media is a factor that triggers the economic activity of a country's people, consisting
of the consumption of the public, the government, or even outsiders.
3. Value of national income to calculate taxes from the media industry and other taxes.
4. The media industry is the largest share of national income which is a source of
welfare for the community.
