The new health care law provides some assistance to Medicare recipients who fall into the prescription drug coverage gap or "donut hole." Beginning in 2010, Medicare recipients will receive a one-time $250 rebate check if they reach the coverage limit. Additionally, discounts on prescription drugs will be phased in over time, with a 50% discount on brand name drugs and 7% discount on generic drugs starting in 2011. The law aims to close the coverage gap completely by 2020.
