Jimmy Wanted to be part of a gang, group identity very important to him. Wanted to be different but he was the same as any other mod - wanted to be alternative. Took it too seriously wanted to get out of his dead end job and his life. Identity compromised when his friend is beaten up. Stereotyped (scenes at home with his Dad and at work).
Jimmy contd ‘ Got to be part of a gang, haven’t you got a mind of your own’. There is a divide between youth and adults. Divide between middle class and working class (jimmy being sick in the loos) Reinforces the representation of youth and the binary oppositions in the film
Steph Countertype Appearance- very feminine, different from the stereotypical modette. Long hair connotations of femininity, prettiness. Modettes – boy like Behaviour is more associated with a male. Jimmy in the end takes on the stereotypical girls role of thinking he had a relationship. Role reversal
Steph contd No emotional attachment ‘just a bit of fun’ In control of her sexuality. Pill introduced in 1961. Her role is what we would associate with a contemporary representation of a girl. Girls magazines and other mediums represented girls as innocent and naive.
Ideology Sub cultural ideology Living for the here and now Dominant ideology of being in a gang. Them and us – (mods v society)- binary oppositions (My Generation – young v old) Moral panics – Stanley Cohen
Ideology contd Different from the ideology in Hollywood mainstream films. No happy ending – no resolution. British production -Realism through static camera shots, cu, ms, tracking etc, little artistic camera work – Teenage Drama. Unknown actors.
