Media main task evaluation
Jamaal sesay
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products? Give examples to demonstrate using screenshots
.
The media product I produced was an action thriller, I made sure to incorporate
similar conventions of what you would expect to sAs me and my partner decided on
doing a chase sequence we needed to make sure that our product engaged the
audienthe very start until the end. After analyzing thriller and action texts (Skyfall and
Vertigo) we wanted to make our chase scene as engaging and exiting. We done this by
adding keeping all of our shots very fast paced to represent the speed and urgency of
both characters. The use of many short fast paced shots maintains the intensity of
the chase throughout the whole sequence. In both of the chase scenes we analyzed
we saw that they all have music that compliments the chase making the audience feel
slightly anxious as they want to keep on watching to find out the outcome of the
chase. The music that I added to my sequence is very fast pace and aggressive. This
goes very well with the chase and enhances the viewing experience making the
opening to the film more exciting.
This is one of the shots from the chase from my opening sequence, this shot was very
short and the actors were running at high speeds. After this shot we quickly cut to
another ee in an action thriller movie. angle of them running around the bend. The
quickness of this ce from action and the speed of the cuts thrills the audience as it is
engaging and exciting. Me and my partner had to make sure that we maintained this
throughout the the whole sequence so the viewers do not lose focus from the chase.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Age gender class
In my media product we had our actors playing grown men. We chose
this age category as it is more conventional for adults to be doing
something with such seriousness and intensity. we found that giving
our actors the role of teenagers would not be suitable for a thriller
chase as the generic conventions for that social group is represented as
lazy and unproductive. We chose our characters to be men as they are
portrayed as athletic and aggressive in various media texts, that is why
we made our characters fit into these conventions so that we can make
the story line more believable for the audience. The characters in the
text are from the upper middle class. We presented this by having
them wear very formal clothing during the chase. The use of costume
signifies the class of the characters to the audience.
My media product represents the social groups of grown men to be
very aggressive. Me and my partner included this convention into our
text using violence between the two characters.
what kind of media institution might distribute your product?
The BFI institution would be suitable for my
product as they would be good for showing my
product to a local audience and would allow me
to get critical acclaim for the work i have
produced. I feel that having the BFI to distribute
my product as they distribute many British
products and this would be suitable for my
product to gain more recognition as it would be
harder for my film to compete against
international products made for wider
audiences.
who would be the audience for your media product?
For my media product I chose the audience
to be younger viewers most likely in their
teens as they are mostly attracted to films
with high amounts of action and violence.
We used the demographics of our audience
to include some personality traits of theirs
in the text allowing them to become more
engaged with the text. It would also make
them feel like they can identify with the
production. We done this by incorporating
our text with similar hobbies and interests
of teenagers.
How did you attract your audience?
We attracted our audience firstly by
choosing a genre that most people in that
social group would enjoy. As we found that
many teenagers enjoy watching
actionthriller texts we made sure that our
film contained elements from both genres
so that our short production would appeal
to them. We also wanted our product to
appeal to a local audience. We wanted to
attract viewers from London and we done
this by showing the scenery of the area that
we filmed in. We decided to open with a
panning shot across the river showing
canary wharf in the distance. As we
included iconic London scenery in our
opening shot our target audience would
immediately recognize the location and
they would feel that they can identify with
my product.
The fight scene that was added into my
media text was one of the methods that we
used to attract my audience as younger
viewers enjoy large amounts of action and
What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
Before constructing this product I had already had some experience of using a similar camera to obtain
shots as I have attended photography classes. On the other hand constructing an opening sequence was
something that was new to me, allowing me to use different technologies. Whilst constructing my product I
learnt how to use a tripod effectively to get high quality shots of the chase sequence we created. The tripod
allowed us to capture many shots without any unnecessary movement allowing us to make our opening
sequence look professional. Before we started recording our film we had to create a storyboard of what was
going to happen in our product. To present our storyboard we used slide share. Slide share allowed us to
put our story board online to be viewed. I then added the link of my story board to my blog so that when
my blog is visited the person can easily access the storyboard. During the production of my product we used
the digital camera to obtain the shots for the film. The quality of the shots were very good but we still had
some technical difficulties whilst filming. Although the cameras were always fully charged before filming the
battery would only last for about two hours of filming. This prolonged our filming process as we had to end
our filming sessions short on two occasions. This was very frustrating for me and my partner as we were
filming and it was also frustrating for the actors because it meant that they had to come out again on
another day in their free time with the same costume to come and film. This taught me why producers are
always using top of the range equipment when filming stopping them from engaging these problems,
slowing down the filming process. After the recording stage we began to edit our opening sequence using
final cut pro. This software was completely new to me and took me a while of experimenting and fidgeting
for me to get used to the editing software before I could make progress with editing. As I became more
comfortable using final cut I then became more confident in my editing skills. Using final cut pro I had to
trim down the unneeded content from all of the filming that I have done. This was quite long as I had to
make sure that there was always continuity throughout all of the shots that were being used in my opening
sequence. This was very important as my product is a chase sequence all of the action needs to be fluid to
make sure that the audience is always engaged in what is going on. After I edited the shots to give me a
fluid chase I then had to find music that would complement the chase making it more exciting for the
audience. After adding music I had to edit the sound to make sure the audience could hear some of the
diegetic sound
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to the full product?
When looking back to the preliminary task I feel that I have learnt how to
take better shots using the equipment that we were provided with. I think
this because as my product was a chase sequence our shots were very short
and fast paced. This meant that we had to do many shots in quick succession
and as we couldn’t keep on repeating similar shots, we had to become
inventive and come up with new ideas for shots so that the audience would
not suffer from aesthetic redundancy allowing them to stay engaged. looking
back at the preliminary task i feel that I have learnt how to organise and
construct a product in pre production. Whilst planning the preliminary task i
wasn't aware of how long and how difficult it would be to assemble all of the
shots on the storyboard. The experience of the preliminary task allowed me
to prepare myself for the difficulties of my main task. I have also learnt how
to use final cut pro more effectively to enhance the viewing experience of my
product for the audience.

  • 3. How does your media product represent particular social groups? Age gender class In my media product we had our actors playing grown men. We chose this age category as it is more conventional for adults to be doing something with such seriousness and intensity. we found that giving our actors the role of teenagers would not be suitable for a thriller chase as the generic conventions for that social group is represented as lazy and unproductive. We chose our characters to be men as they are portrayed as athletic and aggressive in various media texts, that is why we made our characters fit into these conventions so that we can make the story line more believable for the audience. The characters in the text are from the upper middle class. We presented this by having them wear very formal clothing during the chase. The use of costume signifies the class of the characters to the audience. My media product represents the social groups of grown men to be very aggressive. Me and my partner included this convention into our text using violence between the two characters.
  • 4. what kind of media institution might distribute your product? The BFI institution would be suitable for my product as they would be good for showing my product to a local audience and would allow me to get critical acclaim for the work i have produced. I feel that having the BFI to distribute my product as they distribute many British products and this would be suitable for my product to gain more recognition as it would be harder for my film to compete against international products made for wider audiences.
  • 5. who would be the audience for your media product? For my media product I chose the audience to be younger viewers most likely in their teens as they are mostly attracted to films with high amounts of action and violence. We used the demographics of our audience to include some personality traits of theirs in the text allowing them to become more engaged with the text. It would also make them feel like they can identify with the production. We done this by incorporating our text with similar hobbies and interests of teenagers.
  • 6. How did you attract your audience? We attracted our audience firstly by choosing a genre that most people in that social group would enjoy. As we found that many teenagers enjoy watching actionthriller texts we made sure that our film contained elements from both genres so that our short production would appeal to them. We also wanted our product to appeal to a local audience. We wanted to attract viewers from London and we done this by showing the scenery of the area that we filmed in. We decided to open with a panning shot across the river showing canary wharf in the distance. As we included iconic London scenery in our opening shot our target audience would immediately recognize the location and they would feel that they can identify with my product. The fight scene that was added into my media text was one of the methods that we used to attract my audience as younger viewers enjoy large amounts of action and

Before constructing this product I had already had some experience of using a similar camera to obtain shots as I have attended photography classes. On the other hand constructing an opening sequence was something that was new to me, allowing me to use different technologies. Whilst constructing my product I learnt how to use a tripod effectively to get high quality shots of the chase sequence we created. The tripod allowed us to capture many shots without any unnecessary movement allowing us to make our opening sequence look professional. Before we started recording our film we had to create a storyboard of what was going to happen in our product. To present our storyboard we used slide share. Slide share allowed us to put our story board online to be viewed. I then added the link of my story board to my blog so that when my blog is visited the person can easily access the storyboard. During the production of my product we used the digital camera to obtain the shots for the film. The quality of the shots were very good but we still had some technical difficulties whilst filming. Although the cameras were always fully charged before filming the battery would only last for about two hours of filming. This prolonged our filming process as we had to end our filming sessions short on two occasions. This was very frustrating for me and my partner as we were filming and it was also frustrating for the actors because it meant that they had to come out again on another day in their free time with the same costume to come and film. This taught me why producers are always using top of the range equipment when filming stopping them from engaging these problems, slowing down the filming process. After the recording stage we began to edit our opening sequence using final cut pro. This software was completely new to me and took me a while of experimenting and fidgeting for me to get used to the editing software before I could make progress with editing. As I became more comfortable using final cut I then became more confident in my editing skills. Using final cut pro I had to trim down the unneeded content from all of the filming that I have done. This was quite long as I had to make sure that there was always continuity throughout all of the shots that were being used in my opening sequence. This was very important as my product is a chase sequence all of the action needs to be fluid to make sure that the audience is always engaged in what is going on. After I edited the shots to give me a fluid chase I then had to find music that would complement the chase making it more exciting for the audience. After adding music I had to edit the sound to make sure the audience could hear some of the diegetic sound
  • 8. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? When looking back to the preliminary task I feel that I have learnt how to take better shots using the equipment that we were provided with. I think this because as my product was a chase sequence our shots were very short and fast paced. This meant that we had to do many shots in quick succession and as we couldn’t keep on repeating similar shots, we had to become inventive and come up with new ideas for shots so that the audience would not suffer from aesthetic redundancy allowing them to stay engaged. looking back at the preliminary task i feel that I have learnt how to organise and construct a product in pre production. Whilst planning the preliminary task i wasn't aware of how long and how difficult it would be to assemble all of the shots on the storyboard. The experience of the preliminary task allowed me to prepare myself for the difficulties of my main task. I have also learnt how to use final cut pro more effectively to enhance the viewing experience of my product for the audience.
