In many ways across my media products I have used and developed Goodwin’s principles. This can be seen in: ,[object Object],[object Object]
I have used star image motifs throughout my media products which is a typical convention used by record labels due to the demands they face using the star’s image to brand the music. My star image motifs are a red heart balloon and a clown dressed in red. Heart Balloon Music video Website homepage Digi-pack front cover We chose the balloon, which features heavily throughout our music video, website and digi-pack, to relate to the narrative concept of a love story, and symbolizes the hope the main character has for “getting the girl”. Clown We chose to use the clown, who is a major part of our music video, to signify a visual manifestation of the main character’s feelings, for example when he gets rejected by his love interested, his pain is reflected in the clown. The clown also adds a humorous, quirky element to an otherwise common situation. Here is a freeze-frame of our music video, after another rejection from the girl the man is feeling sad which is reflected by the clown. The heart balloon in this particular shot adds a sense of irony to the situation.
There is a frequent reference to voyeurism in my video, seen when the main character tries to connect with the girl he likes via webcam and she rejects him. We see the girls reaction from the guys point of view as you watch the girl on screen, with a smaller box in the corner of the guys’ reaction. We feel this was a successful way of demonstrating Goodwin’s theory of voyeurism, not only because it depicts the notion of looking, but also it relates to our target audience of young adults and teenagers as they fully integrate technology into their way of life which is what we see the characters doing here. I have developed a visual style and brand identity through the matching of house colours and typography across my three products. The main font we chose for the logo of “Two Door Cinema Club” was from the website www.cooltext.com as we wanted something different from the standard applications such as “Word”. This is the font we decided on to appear on our website and front cover of our digi-pack. We feel this font is simple yet quirky, reflecting the band’s individual identity and therefore reinforcing the genre of the artist. The font appears on both ancillary tasks to tie them together and provide consistency for the audience. This is also what we did with our house colours – blue , red and white – which can be seen on all of our products to maintain the same level of consistency. We chose these colours to reflect the fun, happy and energetic nature of our artist.
I have included intertextuality references to film my music video, as the narrative concept featured is similar to that of one you would see in a film or television programme, such as the popular teen TV programme Skins. One of the storylines in Skins shows the main character Tony trying everything he can think of to get a particular girl, Michelle. This storyline is mirrored in our music video and we’ve chosen this particular , common storyline of “boy gets girl” as it is proven popular within or target audience of teens and young adults. Tony and Michelle’s romance in “Skins” was inspiration for our narrative concept. Some of the editing I’ve used includes fast cut montage effects, which is typical of the music video genre . It also fitted in well with our music video when the pace became faster , relating back to the visuals matching the music idea. This is an example of when we used fast cut montage effects, we cut between these shots quickly to match the pace of the music as it sped up.
The conventions I followed to create the digi-pack and website were: - The house colours and typography , mentioned previously to provide consistency - Many other conventions such as the layout. Text either side of the page so the audience can clearly see our star image motif in the middle. Largest font at the top to highlight the importance of the band on the page and grab the audiences attention. Image motif central to the page to draw the audiences attention to it We’ve included hyperlinks to connect the user outside of the webpage and to other areas of the site. Links to other pages under the header to follow the audience’s eye line down the page. In red to stand out against the background. Minimal additions to the bottom of the screen so the audience can still see the background clearly.
