The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Chapter 3 - Islamic Banking Products and Services.pptx
Media evaluation q1
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products.
2. How my opening incorporates
generic conventions
I have used generic conventions in my opening for
example my opening title “ Huntress” is in bold and has
a red tint around the edge. I did this to create a dark and
worried atmosphere.
I have also included certain sound effects and
saturation in specific parts of my film to create
tension and a murky aroma.
In thrillers iconography is very important, I have included
this in mine by filming in a woods I did this because it will
give a sense of isolation and vulnerability.
3. How my opening develops and challenges these
conventions
I used a couple of these conventions as they’re
favoured in thriller films. For example my use of
the woods is a symbolic when creating a thriller.
My antagonist is a female which isn’t very
typical with in a thriller but I wanted to
challenge these ideas by creating a mysterious
woman who the audience see as a threat.
Do my conventions indicate what sub
genre my opening is?
My conventions do indicate that my
opening has a heightened feeling of
suspense and anxiety as I have used
transitions to put my opening together.
4. Title of film
This is the first
title the audience
will see. It
introduces my
storyline and
makes the
audience think
about who the
characters may
be.
I used a simple but
effective font, as I
wanted to use the
colour red as it has a
variety of meanings but
I wanted to use it in a
sinister way.
I used the title huntress because I wanted
the audience to know that my character is
a female.
5. Setting/Location
This is the first shot
that my audience will
see. It sets the
location and gives the
audience a bit more
information on the
opening.
For my film I
wanted to
include a typical
thriller
iconography so I
used a woods. I
did this because
the audience
would know that
the protagonist
will be isolated
and vulnerable.
6. Costumes and props
I didn’t
specifically
pick
costumes as
you don’t see
the
antagonist
but I did
want the
protagonist
to be wear
everyday
clothes like a
coat and
jeans for
example.
I didn’t use any
props for my film
opening because I
wanted it to look
rural and not set
up. This way it
looks more natural
and not played out.
7. Camera work and
editing
I thought I needed
to make this
scene more
creepy. So I
duplicated the
picture and laid it
over the top to
create a blur of
Mary.
For some of my shots I used a tripod so I
could get pan shots. I mostly did hand
held shots as I wanted it to be from the
stalkers point of view. This moves the
audiences attention to a graveyard and
makes them think about what will happen
next.
The detail of the graveyard
and that it is in black and
white contrasts against
the woods as they have
been saturated. This gives
my film opening some
verisimilitude.
8. I choose this font
because I thought it
suited my film opening
the best. The audience
may also catch on to
the fact I have chosen
the colour red because
it makes it seem dark.
Title font and style
I wanted the inside of the text to be white so it stood out
against my monochrome filters I have put on my film.
9. Storyline and how it’s set up
The storyline at
the start of my
opening film may
be hard to figure
out as it only
shows you the
scenery but I
wanted the
audience to feel
like the character
is isolated.
I edited my film into black and white because it could
suggest that it’s going to be dark and a cold storyline.
10. Genre and how the opening suggests it
My opening suggests it could be a horror or a thriller which
of course it is. I wanted to create a path way like this one as
I wanted the audience to think that the antagonist is always
there.
My opening
suggests that my
film is a thriller
because I cut
between the woods
and a graveyard..
The woods is a
typical thriller
iconography.
11. How characters are introduced
This character
is introduced
early on but is
completely
anonymous all
the way
through the
opening.
The huntress is filming from her point of view so she
is introduced from the beginning but we never see
her we only hear her walking.
12. Special effects
To bring a new
element into
my opening I
wanted to blur
some pieces so
that the
protagonist
would remain
hidden but so
that there is
more mystery.
At first I had part of my film in colour but I had
saturated it. I then changed my mind and put it
into black and white as it looks better in
monochrome. This brings a new level to my
opening as all the colours link together.
