Union (ADDA-VNFU) Organic Project

4 Agricultural Development Denmark Asia (ADDA)
1 Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, Germany
Overview
v  farmers' survey within the Organic Participatory
Guarantee System (PGS) in Soc Son, Hanoi, Vietnam
v  results outlined, the case is made that the organic
principles are measurable and comparable
v  farmers rate organic principles of health (74%), ecology
(79%), fairness (68%), and care (71%)
v  quantifying holistic concepts: a less mechanistic
measure of farm system functioning
v  farmer‘s perspective to promote and help shape the
future of the movement according to the principles
Principles Overview
v  the basis from which organic agriculture grows and
develops (IFOAM)
v  global participatory stakeholder process unite the
values across the organic movement (Luttikholt 2007)
v  developed by the International Federation of Organic
Agriculture Movements (IFOAM 2003-2005)
v  to serve as a guide for practice and development and
to mitigate rules (Alrøe & Kristensen 2004)
Principles of OA
v  Health “sustain and enhance the health of soil, plant,
animal, human and planet as one and indivisible”
v  Ecology “based on living ecological systems and cycles,
work with them, emulate them and help sustain them”
v  Fairness “build on relationships that ensure fairness with
regard to the common environment and life opportunities”
v  Care “managed in a precautionary and responsible manner
to protect the health and well-being of current and future
generations and the environment”
In 19 languages (IFOAM 2013).
Measuring the Principles
v  no concrete attempts to measure these principles in
action (here is an early attempt)
v  estimate happiness regressions using large random
samples of individuals (Clark & Oswald 2002) and
with single item scales (Abdel-Khalek 2006).
v  a call for more professional, uniform, and reproducible
analysis (Ng 1996).
Methods
v  March-April 2012 with 30 farmers (2 men 28 women)
v  Six organic vegetable PGS producer groups in Sóc Son
district, Hanoi, Vietnam (Whitney et. al. 2014)
Maps from CartoGIS, College of Asia and the Pacific, The Australian National University
Methods
Operation and management of PGS groups
v  semi-structured questionnaires by a researcher, a
translator and a farmer-trainer (OECD 2013)
v  satisfaction (interval scale) with various aspects of the
production system & cropping plan
v  perception of the qualities & the functioning of groups
and areas for improvement
Results: Principles
v  Percent agreement = largely satisfied but still room for
improvement: ‘Health' 74%, ‘Ecology’ 79%, ‘Fairness’
68%, and ‘Care’ 71%
Table 1. Correlation and significance of r for all principles¥

Results: Management
v  ‘System’ (25 q’s) ‘Crop Plan’ (24 q’s)
v  percent agreement = room for improvement: ‘System’
63% & ‘Crop Plan’ 57%
Table 2. Correlation and significance of r for cropping and
management satisfaction
*System = functioning of the farming system in general.
†Crop Plan = functioning of the cropping plan in specific.

Discussion & Conclusions
v  measuring the organic principles is possible
v  quantifying holistic concepts: a less mechanistic
measure of farm system functioning
v  uniform measurement is necessary and we propose
this as a general outline and springboard for future
studies
v  higher scores for ecological aspects of the farming
system = more satisfaction with the cropping plan and
overall functioning of their group.
Bridging the gap
Suggestions
v  Organic is more than just agricultural production: a
movement and a way of life
“With a quantifiable measurement of the functioning
of organic systems, from the point of view of the farmer
at the center of these systems, we may find more ways
to promote and help shape the future of the movement
according to the principles of organic agriculture and as
a challenge to existing dominant and damaging
paradigms.” - ADDA-VNFU

  • 10. Discussion & Conclusions v  measuring the organic principles is possible v  quantifying holistic concepts: a less mechanistic measure of farm system functioning v  uniform measurement is necessary and we propose this as a general outline and springboard for future studies v  higher scores for ecological aspects of the farming system = more satisfaction with the cropping plan and overall functioning of their group. Bridging the gap
  • 11. Suggestions v  Organic is more than just agricultural production: a movement and a way of life “With a quantifiable measurement of the functioning of organic systems, from the point of view of the farmer at the center of these systems, we may find more ways to promote and help shape the future of the movement according to the principles of organic agriculture and as a challenge to existing dominant and damaging paradigms.” - ADDA-VNFU Bridging the gap
