7. • Mechatronics is used for integration
of microprocessor control systems,
electrical systems and mechanical
systems.
• A Mechatronics system is not just a
marriage of electrical and
mechanical but it is a complete
integration of all of them.

What is Mechatronics?
8. Contd.
• Synergistic combination of mechanics, electronics, microprocessors
and control engineering
• Like concurrent engineering
• Does not take advantage of inherent uniqueness available
• Control of complex electro-mechanical systems
• Rethinking of machine component design by use of mechanics, electronics
and computation
• Allows more reconfigurablility

9. Mechatronics
The synergistic combination of mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering
•Emphasis on integrated design for products
•Optimal combination of appropriate technologies
15. •Desktop sized Factory
•Build small parts with a small factory
•Greatly reduces space, energy, and
materials

18. Automation
Automation is the use of machines and
technology to make processes run on their
own without manpower
Technique, method, or system of operating or
controlling a process by highly automatic
means, as by electronic devices, reducing
human intervention to a minimum
Defined as appropriate use of machines,
electronic devices and computer software for
the construction work
Increase the productivity and Quality
Reduces the duration and laborious work
Increases the safety and flexibility

19. Automation & Robotics
Robots are a piece of equipment that can perform a variety of tasks
with programming
Automation is a term that is used for special purpose machines or
systems that are designed to perform a specific task.

21. ACTUATORS
• Actuator is a device which is used to actuate a
process.
• Actuate is to operate the process.
• Actuators are the device used for converting
hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical energy
into mechanical energy.
• Mechanical energy used to get the work done.
Actuators perform functions just opposite to
that of the pump.
• Used for lifting, tilting, clamping opening,
closing, metering, mixing and turning, and for
many other operations
22. .
An actuator is a component of machines that is
responsible for moving or controlling a
mechanism or system.
Switching devices – mechanical switches, eg. relay and
solid-state switches, e.g. diodes, thyristors and
transistors app – switch on or off electrical devices
Solenoid – type devices used to actuate valves of hydraulic
and pneumatic systems. (flow control)
Drive systems – DC motor, AC motor and stepper motor.
ACTUATORS (Contd.)
Example:
In a CNC milling machine, there may be an electrical signal output from the
CNC controller to move the milling table in the x direction for a certain
length. There you need an actuation system.
23. • Actuation systems are the elements of control systems
which are responsible the output of a microprocessor or
control system into a controlling action on a machine or
device.
• Types of Actuators
• Mechanical Actuators
• Electrical Actuators
• Hydraulic Actuators
• Pneumatic Actuators
