Aim: To preparedibenzal propanone from benzaldehyde
Chemicals required: Acetone, Benzaldehyde, 10% NaOH solution
NOTE: Calculate the other necessary materials and conduct the experiment using 3.8ml of
benzaldehyde as the starting material.
Procedure: In an ice bath keep conical flask containing acetone (1.0 ml) and add 30ml 10%
sodium hydroxide solution to it shake vigorously for 2 minutes. In another beaker add 15mL
alcohol in 3.8ml benzaldehyde which is also kept in ice bath. Now add dropwise the mixture
of alcohol and benzaldehyde to the beaker containing acetone & NaOH stir it tills the product
which is a pale-yellow solid is obtain. The reaction mixture was cooled in an ice bath and the
pale-yellow solid is filtered, washed with water and 20ml of n-hexane. The dried product is
collected, weighed and recrystallized from ethanol, M.P. (120-122 0
C).
