Overview
Becoming a doctor in India often requires either achieving a High Merit or having
surplus financial resources. Globally, numerous students embark on journeys to different
destinations to fulfill their aspirations and career goals. This migration commonly
involves moving from the eastern part of the world to the western part, driven by factors
such as superior university infrastructure, global exposure, and the availability of
specialized fields and career opportunities.
When considering the medical field, the reasons for migration from India to other
countries differ significantly from those opting for English-speaking nations and Europe.
In India, securing an MBBS seat in any government college stands as one of the most
formidable challenges globally. This challenge stems from the essential requirements of
robust infrastructure and qualified faculty in medical colleges. While the government
has introduced reforms in the medical education sector, including relaxed norms for
opening new medical colleges and academic criteria for faculty appointments, the
dream of obtaining an MBBS seat remains elusive for many.
MBBS Abroad: Diverse Education Patterns
The delivery of medical education varies across countries, each shaping its system to
cater to the needs of its students. Over the past 150-200 years, many Asian countries,
once colonies of the Western world, embraced modern medicine (Allopathic Medicine)
education from their Western counterparts. These nations developed their medical
education frameworks based on community requirements and long-term visions for
healthcare systems post-independence. Broadly, countries have adopted one of three
systems:
1. Asian Education System
2. European Education System
3. American Education System
American Education System Overview
The United States, Canada, South American countries, and the Philippines adhere to the
American education system. In this system, students are required to complete a
Bachelor of Science (BS) program before embarking on a 4-year MD course. The Doctor
2. of Medicine (MD) program spans 2 years of Basic Medical Science (BMS) and 80 weeks/2
years of Clinical rotation. To practice in the U.S., one needs to become a specialist, and
MD graduates must successfully clear the USMLE Exam to enter the Residency Program,
which is equivalent to a Master's program (MD/MS in India) and leads to specialization.
Academic assessments are conducted using the Trimester system. Learn more about
