This is our final message in the Sermon on the Mount. To summarize Jesus’ longest discourse in Scripture and exhort His listeners to action Christ begins with this statement “everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (v. 24). James, the Lord’s half-brother gives similar instructions to the church in Jerusalem when he says, “but be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (Jas. 1:22). Faith in Christ will always equal action on our part, this produces wise disciples that are protected and prepared to weather the storms of life. The contrast is clear from verse 26, those who fail to heed Jesus’ words and put them into action have foolishly built their house upon sand and sooner or later when the rain falls, and the winds blow it will come crashing down and injure everyone inside. The application for us is the crowd’s response, not only were they astonished with his masterful teaching, but they recognized the authority with which He spoke setting Him apart from the other “religious leaders” around Him (v. 29). This principle is still true today. However, many in the world and sadly quite a few Christian’s believe Jesus is not the only voice to speak for God, rather He is just one of the many paths to God. As you walk with Christ what voices do you allow to influence you?
5. OT Context for Jesus’
Teaching
• Ezekiel 13:10-16
• Proverbs 10:25
• Proverbs 12:7
• Proverbs 14:11

“Only a storm will reveal the truth.
Sometimes a storm of crisis or calamity
betrays what manner of person we are,
for ‘true piety is not fully distinguished
from its counterfeit till it comes to the
trial’. If not, the storm of the day of
judgment will certainly do so.”
9. James Montgomery Boice
“It is significant that when
Jesus had finished speaking,
his audience was apparently
more impressed with his
authority than with the content
of the Sermon itself.”
10. John R.W. Stott
“So, the main question the
Sermon forces upon us is not so
much ‘What do you make of this
teaching?’ as ‘Who on earth is
this teacher?”

The Two Foundations
Matthew 7:24-29
A Tale of Two Foundations
These are two of the buildings built in 1970 at the State University of NY at Stony Brook, my alma mater.
The Lecture Hall
Modern
Built with No Right Angles creating a dis-orienting fractal effect.
The Grad. Chem Building
7 stories high, the tallest building when I attended Stony Brook.
I has just had major renovations and, unlike the Lecture Hall, still has an attractive classic look.
But the real story of these two buildings is underground!
First Point
The Strong and Weak Foundations
Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Ezekiel 13:10-16
10 Precisely because they have misled my people, saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace, and because, when the people build a wall, these prophets smear it with whitewash, 11 say to those who smear it with whitewash that it shall fall! There will be a deluge of rain, and you, O great hailstones, will fall, and a stormy wind break out. 12 And when the wall falls, will it not be said to you, ‘Where is the coating with which you smeared it?’ 13 Therefore thus says the Lord God: I will make a stormy wind break out in my wrath, and there shall be a deluge of rain in my anger, and great hailstones in wrath to make a full end. 14 And I will break down the wall that you have smeared with whitewash, and bring it down to the ground, so that its foundation will be laid bare. When it falls, you shall perish in the midst of it, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 15 Thus will I spend my wrath upon the wall and upon those who have smeared it with whitewash, and I will say to you, The wall is no more, nor those who smeared it, 16 the prophets of Israel who prophesied concerning Jerusalem and saw visions of peace for her, when there was no peace, declares the Lord God.
Proverbs 10:25
When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is established forever.
Proverbs 12:7
The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous will stand.
Proverbs 14:11
The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish.
John R.W. Stott
Only a storm will reveal the truth. Sometimes a storm of crisis or calamity betrays what manner of person we are, for ‘true piety is not fully distinguished from its counterfeit till it comes to the trial’. If not, the storm of the day of judgment will certainly do so.”
Second Point
The Foundation of Authority
Matthew 7:28-29
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
James Montgomery Boice
“It is significant that when Jesus had finished speaking, his audience was apparently more impressed with his authority than with the content of the Sermon itself.”
John R.W. Stott
So, the main question the Sermon forces upon us is not so much ‘What do you make of this teaching?’ as ‘Who on earth is this teacher?”
