The Coming of
the Son of Man
Matthew 24
Listen to Matthew 24
Jesus left the temple and was going away,
when his disciples came to point out to him
the buildings of the temple. 2 But he
answered them, “You see all these, do you
not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left
here one stone upon another that will not be
thrown down.”
-Matthew 24:1-2
And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed
one shall be cut off and shall have nothing.
And the people of the prince who is to come
shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its
end shall come with a flood, and to the end
there shall be war. Desolations are decreed.
-Daniel 9:26
3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the
disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell
us, when will these things be, and what will
be the sign of your coming and of the end of
the age?”
-Matthew 24:3

6 Wail, for the day of the Lord is near;
as destruction from the Almighty it will come!
7 Therefore all hands will be feeble,

8 They will be dismayed:

they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look aghast at one another;

9 Behold, the day of the Lord comes,
cruel, with wrath and fierce anger,
to make the land a desolation

the sun will be dark at its rising,
and the moon will not shed its light.

11 I will punish the world for its evil,
and the wicked for their iniquity;
I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant,
and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
12 I will make people more rare than fine gold,

Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud
and comes to Egypt;
and the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence,
and the heart of the Egyptians will melt within them.
2 And I will stir up Egyptians against Egyptians,

At the time of the end, the king of the south
shall attack him, but the king of the north
shall rush upon him like a whirlwind, with
chariots and horsemen, and with many ships.

overflow and pass through.
-Daniel 11:40
41 He shall come into the glorious land. And
tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be
delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab

48 But if that wicked servant says to himself, ‘My
master is delayed,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow
servants and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50
the master of that servant will come on a day
when he does not expect him and at an hour he
does not know 51 and will cut him in pieces and
put him with the hypocrites.
-Matthew 24:48-51
As the bridegroom was delayed, they all
became drowsy and slept.
-Matthew 25:5
Now after a long time the master of those
servants came and settled accounts with
them.
-Matthew 25:19
Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come,
you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of
the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me
food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a
stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked
and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me,
I was in prison and you came to me.’
-Matthew 24:34-36
37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying,
‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we
see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and
clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in
prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer
them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one
of the least of these my brothers, you did it to
me.’

26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the
wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look,
he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27
For as the lightning comes from the east and
shines as far as the west, so will be the
coming of the Son of Man.
-Matthew 24:26-27
30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the
Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the
earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of
Man coming on the clouds of heaven with
power and great glory.

2nd View: Future Generation
Refers to the generation that sees the end-
time signs Jesus describes in Matthew 24
In Greek, the word used for “this” can refer
to something close in time, space or context
13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of
this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever
drinks of the water that I will give him will
never be thirsty again. The water that I will
give him will become in him a spring of water
welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said
to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will
not be thirsty or have to come here to draw
water.”
-John 4:13-15
30 so will it be on the day when the Son of
Man is revealed. 31 On that day, let the one
who is on the housetop, with his goods in the
house, not come down to take them away,
and likewise let the one who is in the field not
turn back. 32 Remember Lot's wife.
-Luke 17:31-32
33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose
it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. 34 I
tell you, in that [Greek: this] night there will
be two in one bed. One will be taken and the
other left.
-Luke 17:33-34
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.
-Hebrews 3:7-9
Therefore I was provoked with that
[Greek: this] generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
11 As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’”
-Hebrews 3:10-11
10 Therefore I was angry with this generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they did not know My ways’;
-Hebrews 3:10 (NASB)
“Trans-generational You”
33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are
you to escape being sentenced to hell? 34
Therefore I send you prophets and wise men
and scribes, some of whom you will kill and
crucify, and some you will flog in your
synagogues and persecute from town to
town,
Matthew 23:33-34
35 so that on you may come all the righteous
blood shed on earth, from the blood of
righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the
son of Barachiah, whom you murdered
between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly,
I say to you, all these things will come upon
this generation.
-Matthew 23:35-36
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills
the prophets and stones those who are sent
to it! How often would I have gathered your
children together as a hen gathers her brood
under her wings, and you were not willing!
-Matthew 23:37
38 See, your house is left to you desolate. 39
For I tell you, you will not see me again, until
you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord.’”

The Days of Noah
37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the
coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days
before the flood they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, until the day
when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were
unaware until the flood came and swept them all
away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
-Matthew 24:37-39
40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be
taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding
at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42
Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on
what day your Lord is coming.
-Matthew 24:40-42
20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the
kingdom of God would come, he answered them,
“The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that
can be observed, 21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it
is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in
the midst of you.”
-Luke 17:20-21
22 And he said to the disciples, “The days are
coming when you will desire to see one of the days
of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And
they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’
Do not go out or follow them. 24 For as the
lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one
side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his
day. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be
rejected by this generation.
-Luke 17:22-25
26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it
be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 They
were eating and drinking and marrying and
being given in marriage, until the day when
Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and
destroyed them all.
-Luke 17:26-27
28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—
they were eating and drinking, buying and
selling, planting and building, 29 but on the
day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and
sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed
them all— 30 so will it be on the day when
the Son of Man is revealed.
-Luke 17:28-30
31 On that day, let the one who is on the
housetop, with his goods in the house, not
come down to take them away, and likewise
let the one who is in the field not turn back.
32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whoever seeks to

33 “Hear another parable. There was a master of a
house who planted a vineyard and put a fence
around it and dug a winepress in it and built a
tower and leased it to tenants, and went into
another country. 34 When the season for fruit
drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to
get his fruit.
-Matthew 21:33-34
35 And the tenants took his servants and beat one,
killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he
sent other servants, more than the first. And they
did the same to them.
-Matthew 21:35-36
37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They
will respect my son.’ 38 But when the tenants saw
the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir.
Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’ 39
And they took him and threw him out of the
vineyard and killed him.
-Matthew 21:37-39
40 When therefore the owner of the vineyard
comes, what will he do to those tenants?” 41 They
said to him, “He will put those wretches to a
miserable death and let out the vineyard to other
tenants who will give him the fruits in their
seasons.”

today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break them with a rod of iron

10 According to the grace of God given to me, like
a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and
someone else is building upon it. Let each one take
care how he builds upon it. 11 For no one can lay a
foundation other than that which is laid, which is
Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the
foundation with gold, silver, precious stones,
wood, hay, straw—
-1 Corinthians 3:10-12
13 each one's work will become manifest, for the
Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by
fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each
one has done. 14 If the work that anyone has built
on the foundation survives, he will receive a
reward. 15 If anyone's work is burned up, he will
suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but
only as through fire.
-1 Corinthians 3:13-15
10 Thus says the Lord God, Behold, I am
against the shepherds, and I will require my
sheep at their hand and put a stop to their
feeding the sheep. No longer shall the
shepherds feed themselves. I will rescue my
sheep from their mouths, that they may not
be food for them.
-Ezekiel 34:10
2 But false prophets also arose among the
people, just as there will be false teachers
among you, who will secretly bring in
destructive heresies, even denying the Master
who bought them, bringing upon themselves
swift destruction.
-2 Peter 2:1
2 And many will follow their sensuality, and
because of them the way of truth will be
blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will
exploit you with false words. Their
condemnation from long ago is not idle, and
their destruction is not asleep.
-2 Peter 2:2-3
12 These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as
they feast with you without fear, shepherds
feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along
by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice
dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting
up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars,
for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been
reserved forever.
-Jude 12-13
4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for
that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you
are all children of light, children of the day.
We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6
So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let
us keep awake and be sober.
-1 Thessalonians 5:4-6
7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and
those who get drunk, are drunk at night. 8
But since we belong to the day, let us be
sober, having put on the breastplate of faith
and love, and for a helmet the hope of
salvation.
-2 Thessalonians 2:7-8
The end of all things is at hand; therefore be
self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake
of your prayers.
-1 Peter 4:7
34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be
weighed down with dissipation and
drunkenness and cares of this life, and that
day come upon you suddenly like a trap. 35
For it will come upon all who dwell on the
face of the whole earth.
-Luke 21:34-35
The wicked man sees it and is angry;
he gnashes his teeth and melts away;
the desire of the wicked will perish!
-Psalm 112:10
12 The wicked plots against the righteous
and gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he sees that his day is coming.
Psalm 37:12-13
