FEAST AND
CELEBRATIONS
*UNIT 10
a. How do you celebrate
Mother’s Day in your country?
*A
b. Read the passage and find out which
flower is the symbol of this special day
We love and care for our mothers every single day of
the year but the second Sunday of May is a special day to show
our love. People almost everywhere in the world celebrate
Mother’s Day. The date and the ways may be different, yet
the idea is still the same - to honour our mothers in some
special way. In some countries carnations symbolize this special
day – pink to be worn for a living mother and white if the
mother has died. We honour our mothers with gifts and visits on
this special day.
Mothers are angels on earth. They guide us through the
difficulties in our life. No relationship we form can ever be as
close as the one we have with our mothers.
Here are some sayings of famous people on
what mothers mean to us:
‘A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and
children sleep soundly in them.’ Victor Hugo
‘All that I am or hope to be I owe to my
angel mother. I remember my mother’s
prayers and they have always followed me.
They have clung to me all my life.’
Abraham Lincoln
‘A mother has a slender, small body, but
a large heart – a heart so large that
everybody’s grief and everybody’s joy
found welcome in it, and hospitable
accommodation.’ Mark Twain
c. The sentences below are the paraphrases of
the quotation of the famous people above.
Match the sentences with the quotes.
Mothers are ready to share the
feelings of people around them.
We feel comfort and peace
when we are with our
mothers.
Our mothers wish the best
for us all through our
lives.
Abraham LİNCOLN
Victor HUGO
Mark TWAIN
