Maternity Services Summary
Maternity Services Directory
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust provides
comprehensive maternity services across Lewisham,
Greenwich and Bexley, as well as welcoming
women from outside these boroughs.
We are committed to ensuring local women have a
range of high quality birth options to choose from,
and our dedication to continual service improvements
ensures we provide the best services possible to
women across south-east London and parts of Kent.
We have made significant improvements to our
services for women and their babies in recent years,
such as the major upgrade to the delivery suite at
Lewisham Hospital, including the introduction of two
new home-from-home rooms.
Modern delivery facilities are also available at Queen
Elizabeth Hospital. A new state-of-the-art Birth
Centre will also be unveiled at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in March 2015, complementing
the highly regarded Birth Centre at Lewisham Hospital, with 100% of users happy to
recommend the service to friends and family.
The community midwifery department has also invested in a range of equipment
to improve home births, including portable birth pools and other birthing aids, to
encourage and support more women to give birth in the comfort of their own homes.
Birth Options:
w	State-of-the-art delivery suites at Lewisham Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital
w	Home-from-home rooms on the Labour Ward at Lewisham Hospital
w	Choice of two Birth Centres in Lewisham and Greenwich
w	Home births encouraged and supported across Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley
Antenatal Care
Antenatal clinics:
We currently hold antenatal clinics in most GP
surgeries across the boroughs. However, to alleviate
some of the pressure on GP surgeries and ensure all
women are seen close to their home, we now also
hold antenatal clinics at
w	Waldron Health Centre
w	Bellingham Children’s Centre
w	Manor House Children’s Centre
w	Eliot Bank Children’s Centre
Women have the option of choosing where to see
their midwife and can find out the full range of options
by calling the midwifery team on 077 8784 1986.
Additional antenatal support:
If women require additional obstetric support
during their pregnancy, our team of experienced
midwives, obstetricians and specialist staff provide
a full range of obstetric, screening and ultrasound
services in our Antenatal Clinics at University
Hospital Lewisham, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in
Greenwich and Queen Mary’s Hospital in Bexley.
We run monthly pregnancy evenings for women:
w	University Hospital Lewisham - 1st
Wednesday
of the month
w	Queen Elizabeth Hospital - 3rd
Wednesday of
the month
These sessions are to help women find out more
about services available at our hospitals and in
the boroughs they live in, including meeting our
midwives and having a tour of the hospital.
Improving Choice for Local Women
Wide Range of Specialist Care
We also provide specialist care for women with
additional healthcare needs. These services include:
wDiabetic Clinics, run jointly with the diabetes
specialist nurse, consultant obstetrician, dietitian
and midwife for diabetes. The clinic is for pregnant
mothers who are diagnosed with diabetes before their
pregnancy and those who have developed diabetes
during their pregnancy. The aim of the clinic is to
provide high quality, individualised care for women with diabetes.
w	HIV Clinics are run by a specialist midwife, obstetric
consultant, HIV consultant and a specialist HIV nurse to
support pregnant mothers who have been diagnosed
with HIV during their pregnancy or before. They are
offered high quality care to meet their individual needs.
w	An award winning Perinatal Mental Health team
that provides specialised care for pregnant women
and new mothers who suffer from mental illness to
ensure they have a positive experience during pregnancy and a smooth transition to
motherhood. The team provides outreach programmes and home visiting before and
after the birth to engage with women less likely to access services themselves.
w	Specialist Safeguarding Midwives chair a
weekly Maternity Safeguarding Meeting - a
multidisciplinary meeting that discusses all families
where risks have been identified and puts plans
in place to offer early help and support. There is
the Kaleidoscope team in Lewisham and the Best
Beginnings team in Greenwich and Bexley, who
work with woman with complex needs. Within the
team there are midwives who work with young
women who are expecting their baby before their
19th
birthday.
w	Vaginal Birth after Caesarean Clinics (also known
as VBAC) are run by an experienced midwife who
facilitates discussion and advises pregnant mothers
regarding their birth choice following their previous
baby being delivered by caesarean section.
Experienced Community Midwives
We have a team of experienced community
midwives across Lewisham, Greenwich and Bexley,
who support women throughout the pregnancy
and postnatal period providing continuity of care,
including a homebirth service. Over 95% of women
using the community service would recommend
this service to their friends and family.
In addition, we have two vulnerable women’s teams
across the boroughs providing specialist maternity
care for women who need additional support
during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
