Mashhad Comprehensive Public Transport Plan
Urban train systems spread all over the world. In the holy city of Mashhad in Iran, municipal authorities provided preliminary design studies in 1991 which led to the preparation of Mashhad Transportation Services in early 1994 by the Transportation Studies Center of Sharif University of Technology.
Comprehensive studies of Mashhad transportation between 1994 and 1999 and development research of railway transport between 2002 and 2004 was conducted by the Institute of Transportation, Sharif University of Technology. Based on researches approved by the Traffic Council of State and stated in Traffic Supreme of Iran cities, Mashhad needs 4 metro lines. According to existence of new cities such as Golbahar in the north and Binalud in south, after some researches, the development of subway lines in these cities was also expected and its ratification process has been done.
After analyzing various options and studies, the best route got a priority which was from the end of the Fadayian Islam street (Nakhrisi) to the end of Vakil Abad Boulevard; because, based on estimates for the year 2016, Demand for travel by public transport on this route is so large that the number of passengers in each direction during peak hours is over 17,000 and to respond to this demand, a rail system of LRT train urban style with adequate capacity which meets the technical specifications, is required.
Line 1: South-East to West: From Airport to Vakil Abad 24 km
Line 2: North to South: Kouhsangi to North Tabarsi 15 Km
Line 3: North to East: Amiriyeh to Abouzar town 28.5 Km
Line 4: South to North-West: Shahid Rajaee district to tomb of Khajehrabi 15 Km
Line 5: Monorail ring around Mashhad City 46 Km
MUROC is not the investor itself. It takes over new lines once they are commissioned by the MURCO.
MURCO(Mashhad Urban Railway Corporation) is the authority that tenders, constructs and commissions the new railway lines in the city.
MUROC is an affiliate company of Mashhad Municipality and was established in 2005 for operating the urban railway network in the metropolitan area. The company currently operates 1 urban railway lines of 19 km. With inauguration of line 1, Mashhad became the second city of Iran which entered railway transportation system.
It is a private company and is subject to the Iranian Commercial Laws. All managers including the Directing Manager as well as all employees are recruited under competitive private sector conditions. Only the members of the Board of Directors are appointed from among current bureaucrats of the Municipality.
The Company’s purchases are subject to the Public Procurement Law.
In February 2th, The 4.5 Km extension of line 1 with 2 station(including HashemiNezhad international airport) Was inaugurated and Mashhad Became the first Iranian city which connect it’s railway lines to it’s Airport.
Winning the “high quality of consumer services” award:
Alongside 80 cities from 30 countries of the 5 continents in the world, Mashhad, as the second largest city and the spiritual capital of Iran with population of over 3 million people, has joint the campaign “Grow with Public Transport” for developed transportation systems, and will continue to expand its contribution toward public transportation in Iran. With operation of line 1, Mashhad Urban Railway Operation Co. won the “costumer service award” in Biennial congress of UITP in 2013 Zurich, Switzerland.
Under normal circumstances, we have approximately 8 percent increase in the ridership every year. Throughout the operation of line, we carried a total of more than 134 million passengers.
For the entire transport system of Mashhad, we have an integrated smart ticket called ManCard. It’s valid for all transport modes within the city.
So, to summarize what we do: We can plan and start up any operations. We operate and maintain the system. Also we provide training services for divers & technical staff.
