- Same item, same source, same materials, same price but the item on the right outsells the one on the left. To sustain our 150 year old fourth generation family business we must address the above issue of greenwashing and unfair competition and our compatibility with a restorative economy, the 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) the circular economy.
- A tool was required to assess the associated impacts regarding the extraction from and emission to the environmental of packaging options and packaging/product relationships prior to establishing a route forward that is compliant with the circular economy and the 3R’s. This tool is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). LCA requires a full disclosure of material components and weights. Due to IP issues this information is difficult to come by and hence the establishment of an LCA packaging laboratory – The LCA Centre
- Once a study is made any claim to third parties requires peer review. Who are we to make these claims? Will the claim reader understand the claim is credible? The likely highest consumer acceptable claim should be made with a recognized environmental NGO. Pacombi worked on a two years study with the Dutch NGO Natuur & Milieu to develop an approach that they could support and promote. Natuur & Milieu insisted we dedicate part of our time to sharing this approach with non-Pacombi users of packaging. In 2014 we billed our first external client Wageningen University and since then we have provided guidance to Bio+, KPN, Herkel, AS Watson and many more. Studies by RVO and Ellen MacArthur Foundation have/are being contributed to and visiting lectures have been given at Hasselt and Twente Universities and invitations for such at Wageningen University. Support to the Rabo Bank CE Challenge and up-coming support for Food Valley on the same subject.
- 1/ Consumers see the sorting of packaging waste as making a very much larger contribution to the environment than traveling less, turning down their household warming, cycling instead of driving. 2/ Packaging is X% of the EU footprint. Product without packaging would lead to far higher levels of wastage. If Food Wastage was a country it would have the third largest enviromental footprint. 3/ Packaging plays a vital role in protecting and portioning product to reduce waste, often at very little impact itself (milk packaging is typically 2% of the footprint of the pack/milk offering). 4/ Material resources in packaging are valuable and have considerable embodied footprint hence at all times these materials should be recovered if the package itself cannot be reused. 5/ Consumers are focused on the end-of-life scenario of packaging but this has to be seen in respect to the start-of- Life environmental charge of the product. The whole Life Cycle needs understanding as does the technical and design benefits/limitations of the resource to produce efficient packaging and packaging/product.

Daarnaast: Two resources are available to a pack designer, one from natural gas feedstock and one from agricultural feedstock:- 1/ Does the use of the resource lead to a reduction in the overall resource use and footprint of the item (resource efficency)? Does one resource require the addition of other resources to make it function, if so, what is the impact of that additional resource? 2/ Is the item reuseable? Is the resource able to withstand the reuse processes (ie washing)? Is the reuse process environmentally efficient? 3/ Is the item recyclable? Is the resultant recyclate compatable with the remaking of the item? Or is it more compatable to the production of an item of a less stringent functionality? Is recycling of the resource actually available? Is the recycling process environmentally efficient? How many times can the material be recycled without loosing its functionality? At what percentage level can recyclate be added to an item? To understand the relative footprint of circularity and compliance with the 3R’s one needs to use LCA at various points.
- Leakage occurs when an item is not collected for waste disposal, such as litter. Litter is a societal issue that can only be addressed by behaviour change through:- 1/ monetarization 2/ fining 3/ ostrisization (as with smoking) There are very few packaging products that can breakdown in the marine environment without leaving behind a toxin. Plastics act to carry these toxins whose primary source is agriculture and paper making industry Hence the importance of not littering any item and to understand the toxins associated with the life cycle of your product. The marine aquatic toxicity figure for Tissue Paper can be 28 times higher than for Polypropylene. LCA helps to make this comparison possible.
- Understand your resources choices from a yield/functionality and environmental impact perspective. Understand the implications of these choices (ie contribution to the Gulf of Mexico agricultural run-off dead zone or plastic soup). Understand that there will be resource winners and losers in this pursuit. Work with science/logic and not with opinion/ lobbying. Work with material-neutral suppliers who have no bias for a resource type of conversion process type. Use independent sources to understand your packaging choices from an environmental perspective.
