Martin Luther King Jr. was an American civil rights leader born in 1929 who fought against racial segregation and discrimination through nonviolent civil disobedience. He was a Baptist minister who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for combating racial inequality through peaceful protests and his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. He was assassinated in 1968 while supporting a sanitation workers' strike in Memphis, Tennessee.
