There is no single training model for forensic psychologists. Most obtain a doctorate in clinical psychology and then pursue postdoctoral training in forensics. However, more schools are now offering degree programs specifically in forensic psychology due to demand. Obtaining a postdoctoral placement can be difficult as only a few programs exist nationwide that generally only accept a few applicants per year. Alternatively, one can gain related experience through internships in correctional, community, or forensic facilities and writing a dissertation focused on forensic psychology.

psychology and law. A few universities offer joint

receive a one-year master’s degree in law rather than a

forensic hospitals to acquire related experience and
write a dissertation that focuses on the area of forensic
psychology. Students should stay current with the field
