A high school in Umlazi, which not too long ago had a bad reputation for
vandalism, drug abuse, crime and unruly behaviour, and which had an
average pass rate in matric of 17 percent, is now achieving pass rates of 86
percent last year.
The school is Ndukwenhle High School and the big change has come since
the appointment of Mr Nkosinathi Shandu as principal, who has introduced
discipline coupled with a sense of order and direction.
Ndukwenhle High is one of Transnet National Ports Authority's 15 adopted
schools in the South Durban Basin – a long-term initiative designed to build
TNPA's own capabilities within the port by developing critical skills within
its communities from the ground up.
Now, adding to that initiative, TNPA 2 weeks ago (Thursday, 12 November)
handed over an upgraded and fully equipped science laboratory as well as
new ablution facilities.
"We recognise that progressive and sustainable ports are ones that co-exist
with and uplift their communities," said Durban Port Manager, Moshe
Motlohi. "We are presently rolling out our contribution to Transnet's
Market Demand Strategy (MDS), which aims to enable the effective, effi-
cient and economic functioning of an integrated port system to promote
economic growth.
“A key pillar of the MDS is sustainable developmental outcomes and this is
just one example of how we can meet the needs of the port while uplifting
surrounding communities."
The investment at Ndukwenhle High included furniture, science laboratory
equipment, chemicals, a smartboard with the science curriculum installed
and enhanced security features for the classroom.
Earlier this year Ndukwenhle High was awarded Certificates of Excellence
by the Department of Basic Education and Mangosuthu University of Tech-
nology,

in recognition of its outstanding performance in mathematics and for being
the most improved school in Umlazi District.

the Maritime Industry

Profiling Titto Nondaba
One young man from the South Coast is indulging his newly-
found desire to explore and learn more about the maritime indus-
try, after what he calls an ‘incidental introduction’ to the
Industry.
Nondaba, Port Shepstone-born, is currently residing in Newlands
West, just outside Durban. After matriculating from Port
Shepstone High School, Nondaba obtained a National Diploma in
Business Management from the Durban University of Technology
(DUT). He is currently doing a Bachelor of Technology in Business
Administration, part time at DUT.
He serves as a graduate in training at the EThekwini Maritime
Cluster under the Enterprise Development programme. His
current job entails assisting in the facilitation of strengthening the
capacity of small and medium enterprises, towards enabling them
to take advantage of the business opportunities within the mari-
time industry. All of this is achieved through the Accelerator and
Incubator programmes, which are interventions in the ambit of
the Enterprise Development programme.
“I was indirectly introduced to the maritime industry, through the eThekwini Municipality’s recruitment programme, after an interview concerning my
future goals and aspirations to be part of a dynamic and ever growing environment. This has led me to a new desire to gain a great understanding of the
maritime industry which is a huge contributor to our economy,” explains Nondaba.
He says that his aspiration is to thrive in the stimulating and challenging opportunities that lie ahead, which will help him apply his university acquired
skills and knowledge and gain professional experience within the industry.
“I am an ambitious individual who wants to learn and develop, under the guidance of those who are at the top in their respective fields, and then use
those skills to become an expert myself,” adds the determined young man. Nondaba says he finds the maritime industry unique, interesting and limitless.
“It is vibrant and ever changing, it will keep you on your toes,” he says. Nondaba says when he is not working or studying, he enjoys socialising with
friends and family, and reading a variety of literature. “I learn a lot of things from reading, it also helps boosts my English vocabulary,” he continues.
Sixteen former matriculants from TNPA's 15 adopted schools have been accepted into the General Pur-
pose Rating (GPR) programme offered by TNPA's Maritime School of Excellence, it was learned last
week.
The 16 students commenced the programme at the School of Excellence on Monday, 16 November 2015.
“It is exciting for us to see our strategy in action with learners from our adopted schools starting out on
marine careers. This investment will enhance the teaching and learning of Science, which we believe will
encourage the learners to pursue maritime and engineering occupations," said Durban port Manager,
Moshe Motlohi.

4. Grindrod’s New Training Centre Opened

The official opening of Grindrod’s new Training Academy was
opened last week at its new premises of 48 Hannah Road in
Umbilo, Durban.
For 40 years Grindrod’s Training School, previously the Uni-
corn Shipping Training School, operated at an address in
Fletcher Road, Maydon Wharf from where tens of thousands
of seafarers of all kinds, from ship going to sailing, to working
on cruise ships, passed through its premises.
Training has included everything from basic safety at sea
courses to more specialised training including full in-house
cadetships and training involving ratings with Unicorn Ship-
ping and other Grindrod companies, as well as outside mari-
time sector interests.
Now the newly rebranded Grindrod Shipping Training Acade-
my is situated in a smart new building, recently renovated and
converted to suit both the Academy and the associated Stur-
rock Grindrod Marine Tech.
The Unicorn Marine Training School opened in refabricated
premises in Fletcher Road, Maydon Wharf in 1975 with the
commencement of training for the company's cadets. The
premises originally belonged to African Coasters, one of the
shipping companies incorporated with other companies into
what became Unicorn Shipping in 1966. Within two years of
opening, training had been expanded to include for ratings,
in line with IMO requirements of the International Convention on Standards for Training & Certification of Watchkeepers (STCW 78). But that’s another
longer story for our month-end Newsletter.
