Marian Anderson was an African American singer who faced discrimination in Philadelphia where she was denied singing at an all-white school, but later performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and toured Europe. She then sang at the Lincoln Memorial after being denied singing at Constitution Hall, and later joined the Metropolitan Opera Company, becoming one of the first African American singers to join a major opera company.
