Studentsknowthatadvisingwill be helpful andthattheywill be treatedwithrespect. Eachstudentis
treatedas a unique personwithunique issuesandchallenges. Barriersto studentsfeelingcomfortable
accessingadvisingare activelyaddressed. Iregularlyaskstudentstoevaluate myadvising,withaneye
towardmakingsure theyfeel comfortable comingin,alongwithanyimprovementsIneedtomake.
My advising is trustworthy
Studentsknowthattheycan getclear informationandexplanationsfromme. Theycantrust that
policieswill be appliedfairly,consistently,andaccurately. Studentinformationistreatedconfidentially
perFERPA.
My advising is future-oriented
Studentsare encouragedtoexplore careeroptions,andare supportedinfindingtheirplace inthe larger
researchand academiccommunities. Advisingfostersself-reflection,encouragingpersonal growth.
Studentsare givenadvisingwhichiscomprehensive andattunedtoindividual,personalgoals.
My advising is professional
I participate inprofessional developmentactivitiestoenhance andimprove myadvising. Iam incontact
withresourcesthroughoutthe universityandbeyondsuchasprofessional organizationsandscholarly
journals,whichsupportandinformmyadvisingpractice. Iam aware of how to accessresourceswhich
my studentsmaybenefitfrom.
My advising is community-oriented
My studentsworkbothindependently,butalsowithinthe context of the department,the university,
and the scientificcommunity. My advisingpractice seekstofoster inmystudents asense of community
and connectiontoeachother. Connectionsandprofessional developmentare encouragedbothwith
the universityandthe largerresearchcommunity. Students’awarenessof theirownunique
contributionstotheircommunitiesisfostered.

I strive tobe thoughtful inmyadvising,recognizingthatI bringto my advisingmyownbiasesandframes
of reference. Iwasstronglyinfluencedinmyadvisingphilosophyandcareerchoice byDr.Sara
Boatman,whowas the directorof the CampusActivitiesandProgramsOffice whenIwasinundergrad.
She was trulyinspirational. Byputtingusinpositionsnotjustof leadershipbutof authority,she
encouragedourpersonal developmentandoursense of self-worth,andhelpeduslive uptoour
potential. Istrive dailytoincorporate the lessonsIlearnedfromher.
