Margaret Garner was an enslaved woman who escaped from Kentucky to Ohio in 1856 with her family. When slave catchers came to return them to their owner, Garner killed her 2-year-old daughter to prevent her from being returned to slavery. This tragic event highlighted the inhumanity of slavery and became the subject of artistic works including Toni Morrison's novel Beloved.
