Russian anarchist and anti-war movement in the third year of full-scale warAntti Rautiainen
Anarchist group ANA Regensburg hosted my online-presentation on 16th of May 2024, in which I discussed tactics of anti-war activism in Russia, and reasons why the anti-war movement has not been able to make an impact to change the course of events yet. Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.

Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Our March meeting will be held one week earlier to
avoid overlapping the 2022 MTNA conference. The
meeting is scheduled for Monday March 21st
.
Our regular NSMTA business meeting will start at
10:00am and our main program will begin at 11:00am.
We will be at the Winnetka Covenant Church 1200
Hibbard Road in Wilmette. Please do remember that
wearing a mask is still a part of the process of meeting
in person. We will, of course, still be offering the remote
option on Zoom for those that can’t make it in person.
The bylaw committee is still hard at work reforming the
existing bylaws and looking to start an officer’s
handbook. We had hoped to finish this project earlier,
but it will take a while longer. I have nearly finished
organizing our boxes of treasurer records and have
most shredded records older than 2014.
The nominating committee will present a slate of the
new officers at the March meeting.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!

Program
Articulating Bartók:
Creating a Pedagogical Edition of “For Children”
For Children represents the synthesis of the many aspects of Béla Bartók---pianist, teacher, editor, composer,
student of folk music, scholar and author. For Children was Bartók’s first large-scale original composition in
which folk music provides the source material; the technical difficulties and conceptual elements are presented
progressively, using a didactic notational style developed to instruct about idiomatic piano technique as well as
authentic folk style. Bartók’s overarching intention across all his work was to capture and precisely convey his
ideas and message through finely detailed notation. In preparing a pedagogical edition of For Children, the goal
is to clarify the composer’s message, and to provide a systematic approach to building the technical skills and
concepts required for an authentic, beautiful and artistic performance. This presentation will clarify the meaning
of the articulation and other notation in For Children, suggest a pedagogical approach for teachers, and include
a performance of selected movements.
* Please bring the Bartok "Music For Children" to the meeting, if you have them.
The newer editions are two volumes, but very old editions are in four volumes.

Honoring Donna Fortney
Long-time North Shore MTA member, Donna Fortney is retiring and was honored by one of her former students
in a recital on November 28th
, 2021 at St. James Lutheran Church in Northbrook. Nathan Laube studied piano
with Donna for many years, participating in AIM through Level 10 and the Sonata-Sonatina Festival. Donna says
that he distinguished himself with top scores and amazing harmonizations.
Nathan continued his studies at Curtis and on a three-year Fulbright scholarship in Toulouse. Nathan served on
the organ faculty at Eastman before joining the faculty of the university in Stuttgart, Germany. He is a Grammy-
award winner and considered “A star among young classical musicians.”
Donna joined NSMTA around 1976 in the first years of the chapter. She has served as President, SCORE editor,
and chaired the Competition and the Sonata-Sonatina Festival committees. She remembers when playing times
were assigned by hand and took two eight hour days. “I learned so much by being a member of NSMTA. I will
long remember the many very accomplished piano/music teachers who have become my friends.”
We wish Donna all the best in her retirement, and hope she will still find time to come to our meetings.
