The Role of the Veterinarian in One Health ProgramDr. Fakhar
Today’s veterinarians are the only doctors educated to protect the health of both animals and people. They work hard to address the health and needs of every species of animal and they also play a critical role in environmental protection, food safety, animal welfare and public health.

3rd International Workshop on Dairy Science
Park scheduled for November 16-18, 2015 in the historic city of Peshawar, Pakistan. The theme of the workshop
is “Supporting the war-hit economy of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through self-employment and hygienic food
production for local consumers and international Halal Meat Market”. T
Animal husbandry and poultry farming represent critical sectors in global agriculture, catering to the diverse needs of human societies for food, fiber, and other products. A multitude of studies have delved into various aspects of these fields, ranging from nutritional considerations and disease management to breeding strategies, economic analyses, and ethical considerations. This comprehensive exploration aims to encapsulate the breadth and depth of research conducted within animal husbandry and poultry farming, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of these endeavors.
One pivotal area of study in animal husbandry revolves around nutrition, as it plays a foundational role in the health, growth, and productivity of livestock and poultry. Researchers have dedicated extensive efforts to formulate balanced diets tailored to the specific needs of different species. These studies consider factors such as age, weight, and intended use of the animals, aiming to optimize nutrient intake for maximal growth and reproductive performance. Additionally, investigations into the impact of individual nutrients on animal health, including vitamins, minerals, and proteins, have yielded valuable insights into preventing deficiencies and enhancing overall well-being.
Disease management is another critical facet of animal husbandry, given the susceptibility of livestock and poultry to various infectious agents. Studies in this realm focus on developing effective strategies for disease prevention and control. This involves research on vaccinations, biosecurity measures, and the development of disease-resistant breeds. Understanding the epidemiology of diseases within specific animal populations is essential for implementing targeted interventions, mitigating economic losses, and safeguarding public health in cases where zoonotic diseases are involved.
In the realm of breeding and genetics, researchers strive to improve desirable traits in animals through selective breeding. Genetic studies aim to unravel the intricacies of the genomes of different species, identifying genes associated with traits such as increased meat or milk production, disease resistance, and adaptability to specific environments. Through careful breeding programs, researchers seek to enhance the overall genetic quality of herds and flocks, contributing to the long-term sustainability and productivity of animal agriculture.
Housing and environmental management constitute a crucial area of study to ensure the well-being of animals and the efficiency of farming operations. Researchers investigate optimal housing conditions for various species, considering factors such as space requirements, ventilation, and insulation. Moreover, studies on waste management and environmental impact address the sustainability of animal farming practices, seeking ways to minimize the ecological footprint associated with livestock and poultry production.

MoU signed between UAP and FATA
A memorandum of understanding was signed by the Vice Chancellor UAP, Prof Dr Zahoor
Ahamd Swati and Dr Jehangeer Shah, Director Livestock FATA for conducting a baseline survey
and collaboration for development of livestock based entrepreneurship; in line with the theme of
the Dairy Science Park—Display Center focused at Self-employment of the graduates associated
with safe food production for local consumers and the International Halal Meat Market.
Livestock and poultry constitute a major natural resource base, but could not get the due
attention in the development process. International Halal Meat Market comprises about
US$ 500 billion and is mostly contributed by the non-Muslim exporters. FATA has
possesses a huge scope reflected in table 2, based upon the sheep and goats populations
inhabiting the hilly and mountainous terrains of the various tribal agencies and FATA. A
major portion of the sheep, goats, cattle and poultry is reared under medium sized
holdings, which provides an opportunity for business development.

A team of Dairy Science Park visited Amsterdam
A team of the Dairy Science Park, comprising the following members, visited Amsterdam, the
Netherlands to attend the third One Health Congress scheduled for March 15 to 18, 2005 and
seek collaboration with the international partners:
1. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Subhan Qureshi (Team Leader/Supervisor)
2. Prof. Dr. Umar Sadique, Consultant Animal Health
3. Prof. Dr. Sarzamin Khan, Chief Technical Advisor
4. Mr. Muhammad Imran Khan, Consultant Animal Physiology
The tour was sponsored by the United States Department of State's Biosecurity Engagement
Program and Sandia National Laboratories. The One Health concept is based on the
recognition that human and animal health is inextricably linked. The Scientific Program of the
3rd International One Health Congress covered all aspects of the One Health concept bringing
together established and young scientist working in this rapidly expanding and highly
multidisciplinary field.
Prevention at the source is key in controlling (infectious) diseases that have a growing impact
on humans, animals and their ecosystems. The 3rd International One Health Congress focused
on how science can help in preventing emerging and re-emerging (infectious) diseases.
Through a special Science – Policy interface policy makers and international organizations
were guided to translate the latest scientific advancements into preventive measures. The
scientific program was organized in three sessions, each covering a specific range of topics in
relation to Prevention at the source.
The sponsors had desired to collaborate with the Dairy Science Park in establishing a Center of
Excellence on Biorisk Management. Discussion was made regarding the collaboration, pusuent
to a powerpoint presentation made by Prof M Subhan Qureshi. A draft MoU was agreed upon
on Biorisk Management Initiative for Pak-Afghan Region (BMI-PAR). The MoU is focusing on
safeguarding the health of livestock and poultry farmers, products consumers and associated
groups; developing standards and legislative guidelines for farming and processing units and
service providers; strengthening interdisciplinary linkages in bio-risk management; alleviating
poverty and supporting entrepreneurship as a combat strategy for bringing peace and stability
in the Region.
A strategy was suggested comprising training of Senior level and middle level scientists,
farmers, industry representatives, students and policy makers in biorisk management;
research on the biohazards in the regional livestock and poultry production, value addition and
marketing; consultation among stakeholders on the issues related to zoonotic diseases, the
food safety, trans-boundary diseases and losses to the farmers income; capacity development
of UAP in research and outreach programs in the region and evaluation of the small and
medium sized livestock and poultry farms for public health safety and devising modules for
minimizing the relevant threats.
