The One Health Center aims to improve global health through an integrated approach addressing connections between human, animal, food, and environmental factors. Its mission is to assess and respond to health problems at this human-animal-environment interface through multidisciplinary and collaborative efforts. Key areas of research and intervention include improved water management, poultry immunization, disease surveillance, food safety, and combating malnutrition. A signature project will pilot interventions in these areas in Uganda to evaluate the added benefits of One Health approaches.
The One Health approach recognizes that human health, animal health, and environmental health are interconnected. It aims to attain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment through collaboration across multiple disciplines. Key agencies like FAO, OIE, and WHO have developed strategic frameworks to foster cooperation between sectors. Case studies demonstrate how delayed or lack of coordination between human and animal health sectors increased costs and impacted control of diseases like Nipah virus. Antimicrobial resistance is another issue that requires a One Health approach.

Evaluation of factors that influence Reoccurrence of Cholera epidemics in Bwe...PUBLISHERJOURNAL
Cholera is an acute enteric infection characterised by sudden onset of profuse, painless watery diarrhoea and vomiting. Transmission of the disease is by faecal-oral route and from man to man via faecal contaminated water, ingestion of contaminated foods and drinks, and bottle feeding in infants. Globally, an estimated 1.4 to 4.3 million cholera cases and 28,000 to 142,000 cholera related deaths occur every year and the highest deaths rates occur in developing countries. The aim of this study was to explore the factors influencing reoccurrence of cholera outbreaks in Bwera hospital-Kasese district, Uganda. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional where quantitative strategy was applied on health workers and households within Bwera hospital. The study targeted 73 respondents; random sampling procedure was used. Three broad themes were based on to obtain results namely; sources of water for home use, environmental sanitation and the role of climate change. It emerged that water was mainly collected from unprotected sources using rudimentary methods and it was made safe by boiling. Hand washing was seen as a common practice done though occasionally. Generally solid wastes were poorly managed including human waste and reinforcing reforestation was seen as a remedy to avert effects of climate change. The commonest source of water for home consumption was from open water surfaces mainly rivers/streams. Boiling was seen as one of the commonest methods of making water safe for home consumption but the numbers of house hold that boils water are very few thereby making them prone to infection. Washing hands was the commonest practice especially before eating but still some children do ignore washing of their hands before eating if their caretakers are not around them; however, it was not consistently after visiting latrine. Poor waste disposal was seen present in the communities whereby bushes and river banks were seen as places where human waste is deposited.

Wildlife-livestock-human interface: recognising drivers of diseaseILRI
This document summarizes a presentation on wildlife-livestock-human disease transmission interfaces in Kenya. It discusses drivers of emerging infectious diseases like climate change and land use changes. Case studies on zoonotic diseases in smallholder farms in Western Kenya and Nipah virus transmission from bats to humans in Asia are described. A study on Malignant Catarrhal Fever transmission from wildebeest to cattle in the Kapiti Plains is also summarized. The presentation concludes that increased contact between wildlife, livestock and humans due to anthropogenic changes is increasing disease risks, and that pathogens may be one step ahead of current prediction capabilities.
Prevalence and Antibiogram of Bacteria Associated with Food Vending in Awka-S...ijtsrd
Food vending is recently a booming part of the food industry and millions of people depend on it for their daily nutritional needs especially because of its easy accessibility. It has become an important public health issue due to widespread food-borne diseases which are leading cause of morbidity and mortality. This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence and antibiogram assay of bacteria associated with food vending in Awka-South LGA, Anambra State. The randomly selected towns for this study were three towns in Awka- South LGA in Anambra state namely Awka State capital , Mbaukwu and Nise. Descriptive cross-sectional study and multistage sampling technique was adopted and sample size determined using a standard formula. Total of 65 food vendors were sampled. Sterile swab sticks were used to swab the palms, aprons, plates and spoons of the food vendors and the rinse method was used for bacteria isolation. Antibiotics sensitivity test of isolates was carried out using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. The bacteria isolates from this study were E. coli 24.41 , S. aureus 21.60 , B. cereus 9.39 , Pseudomonas aeruginosa 15.96 , Serratia marcescens 4.70 , Klebsiella pneumonia 10.56 and Salmonella enterica 13.38 . The bacterial isolates during the course of this study showed wide resistance to conventional antibiotics especially beta-lactams. The findings of this study therefore necessitate the need for sensitization of food vendors and appropriate measures should be established to monitor susceptibility patterns of microorganisms involved as this will help to avoid possible outbreaks. This study was done to carry out a survey of Human Parainfluenza Virus in children aged 1-12years
in Kaduna Metropolis, Nigeria using the Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay Diagnostic kits. Of the 376
samples tested for IgG antibody of HPIV 1, 2 and 3, 288 were seropositive (76.6%). Risk and demographic
factors such as age of the children parental occupation, parental educational status, vitamin A deficiency,
frequency of eating, household size, duration of breastfeeding, environmental smoke, respiratory symptoms,
fever, sickle cell and underlying diseases were analysed. Age (χ2=17.408, p=0.001), parental occupation
(χ2=10.116, p=0.039), duration of breastfeeding (χ2=8.439, p=0.015), presence of respiratory symptoms
(χ2=5.116, p=0.024) were significantly associated with the infection. Observation from the study showed the
importance of Human Parainfluenza Virus as an agent of respiratory tract infection in children. As antiviral
drugs are not readily available, preventive measures should be adhered to in the control of the infection.
This document discusses occupational pesticide exposure among Kenyan agricultural workers from an epidemiological and public health perspective. It notes that while pesticides are widely used to reduce crop losses, their use also poses significant health risks, especially to agricultural workers who are the largest occupational group at risk. Estimates indicate that worldwide, 25 million agricultural workers experience symptomatic pesticide poisonings annually in developing countries. The study assessed acetylcholinesterase inhibition and its determinants, self-reported symptoms, and the knowledge, perceptions and practices of agricultural workers, extension workers, and health care workers regarding pesticide use and safety in Kenya.

This paper explores factors contributing to gastroenteritis and foodborne illness in elderly residents of long-term care facilities. The authors reviewed literature from 1970-2009 relating to pathogens and compared data between facilities. Main pathogens identified were norovirus, rotavirus, E. coli, salmonella, and C. difficile. The elderly are at higher risk due to poor immunity and hygiene. Prevention relies on prompt detection and management of outbreaks through handwashing, sanitation, and monitoring food safety. Further research is still needed to address gaps in knowledge, especially regarding norovirus prevention and sources of foodborne illness.

BATWALA Kiirya Vincent
“Parasite-based diagnosis for malaria in Uganda: Feasibility and Cost-effectiveness”
Dr. Vincent Kiirya Batwala investigated on parasite-based diagnosis for malaria; with the aim of
improving the management of febrile illnesses which are the major killers in Uganda. The
accuracy; feasibility and cost-effectiveness of different diagnostic methods were tested including
microscopy; rapid diagnostic tests that are based on the detection of histidine rich protein-2
produced by Plasmodium falciparum; and polymerase chain reaction that detects ribosomal DNA
with the high quality control exhibited. Vincent Batwala’s research found out that rapid
diagnostic tests for malaria are more accurate, feasible and cost-effective compared to
microscopy; and recommends that the use of rapid diagnostic tests should be scaled-up in areas
where malaria is a common cause of fever. Funders: DBL Centre for Health Research and
Development, University of Copenhagen, Denmark; TAEGETS Makerere University School of
Public Health/Department for International Development (DFID) project; and Belgian Technical
Cooperation (BTC). Supervisors: Prof. Fred Nuwaha; Prof. Pascal Magnussen; and Dr. Kristian

KAGIMU Magid
“The interrelationship between religiosity and HIV infections in Uganda: A Community
Case Study”
Dr. Kagimu examined the association between religiosity and HIV prevalence rates in a case-
control study. The cases were HIV positive youth 15-24 years and the controls were HIV
negative youth. He discovered that higher levels of religiosity were associated with lower HIV
infection rates. Among Christians, praying privately frequently, was the most significant
dimension associated with lower HIV infection rates. Among Muslims, those with Sujda, the
black spot on the forehead as a result of prostration during regular prayers, had lower HIV
infection rates. He concluded that religiosity, especially the dimensions that were significantly
associated with lower HIV infection rates, should be scaled up by all stakeholders involved in
implementing faith-based HIV prevention interventions. The study was supervised by Assoc.
Prof David Guwatudde, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Prof Charles
Rwabukwali, Department of Sociology.

“Understanding Newborn Care in Uganda - Towards Future Interventions”
Peter Waiswa investigated the delays which lead to newborn deaths, and the acceptability at
community level of the evidence-based newborn care practices in eastern Uganda. He found that
whereas most globally recommended newborn care practices were acceptable to the local
community, a few were not. Also, care practices for newborn babies were of poor quality, and
most babies died because of delays at home related to inability of households to recognise sick
newborns or deciding to seek for care from a health facility, or health facilities lacked capacity to
care for newborn babies. Comprehensive health facility strengthening and use of community
health workers to promote newborn care is recommended. The findings informed the Uganda
national Community Health Worker (in the Village Health Team (VHT)) policy. Funding: SIDA,
Save the Children and the Bill Gates Foundation. Supervisors: Ass. Prof. George W Pariyo
(MaK), and Prof. Goran Tomson and Prof. Stefan .S. Peterson (both Karolinska).

“Effect of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in cattle on household income in selected
agropastoral and pastoral areas of Uganda
Dr. Ademun focused on justifying the control of FMD and determining the effect of FMD on
household incomes, cattle and crop production, delivery of social amenities, and cattle market
revenues in four districts: Katakwi, Kumi, Bukedea and Kiruhura. This study found a high
economic cost of FMD of between USD90 to USD400 per household in eastern districts of
which over 50% was due to losses in draught power, FMD affected 40% of social amenities
delivery in these agropastoral districts, but only 0.01% in Kiruhura district due to continued
cattle sales during quarantine. The agropastoral districts lost 66% to 88% of cattle market
revenues during FMD quarantine. FMD vaccinations cost USD2.64 per head of cattle but would
save agropastoral households about 2 times the cattle enterprise profitability and 3.9 times in
Kiruhura. The effect of FMD was much felt in agropastoral areas. Uganda needs an appropriate

‘Molecular and Pathologic diagnosis of paratuberculosis in cattle from selected districts of
central Uganda’
Dr. Okuni focused on improving the diagnosis of bovine paratuberculosis, an economically
important disease of livestock. The highlights of this study included: the determination of the
prevalence of this disease at farm level as well as among slaughtered cattle, the characterisation
of the pathogen and its specific effects on affected cattle; and the development of an immuno-
histo-chemical method based on recombinant Heat shock protein 70kd, used for the first time
ever in the diagnosis of this disease. The study found that the level of the disease is unexpectedly
high for a country with limited documentation of its occurrence, moreover high strain diversity
of the agent of paratuberculosis, including novel ones imply that this disease might have a
complex epidemiology in the country. The supervisors were Professors Ojok Lonzy (MAK),
3. Reinacher Manfreid (Justus-Liebig, Giessen) and Dr. Loukopoulos Panayiotis (A.U.Th), with

SSEMWANGA Deogratius
“Multiple HIV-1 Subtype Infection and Transmitted Drug Resistance; Prevalence in HIV-1
Infected Ugandans and Association to Disease Stage and Progression"
Mr. Ssemwanga investigated how often HIV-1 positive individuals get re-infected with other
HIV-1 types and how this affects their disease progression to AIDS and death. The study also
investigated how often people get infected with drug resistant HIV-1. HIV-1 positive patients
that were re-infected with more HIV-1 types were 14% and 9 % of newly infected patients had
drug resistant HIV-1. Patients that were infected with more than one HIV-1 type were found to
progress faster to AIDS and death. HIV-1 positive patients should therefore avoid getting re-
infected with more/other HIV-1 types using recommended prevention strategies to avoid
complications like increased disease progression leading to AIDS and death. Infection with drug
resistant HIV-1 limits treatment options for patients thereby complicating patient care. The study
was supervised by Prof. Williamson Carolyn, Prof. Lubega George William and Prof. Kaleebu
Pontiano with financial support from the British Medical Research Council.

AGABA Hilary
“Plant Available Water and Tree Seedling Survival in Hydrogel Amended Soils Under
Induced Drought Conditions”
Mr. Agaba’s research focused on finding solutions to the problem of moisture stress in different
soils that limits tree seedling survival and growth. It involved applying Superabsorbent
Polyacrylate (SAP) hydrogels i.e. substances that absorb water many times their weight,
retaining and releasing it slowly to plant roots. The findings show that hydrogels significantly
increased plant available water and prolonged tree seedling survival with reduced
evapotranspiration compared to soils without hydrogels. Hydrogels saved water and labor by
reducing irrigation frequency, yet producing more plant biomass. These findings imply that
hydrogels can be applied to plant trees in sandy soils and drought prone environments leading to
provision of the much needed tree products and services, thereby contributing to mitigating
climate change effects and improving peoples’ livelihoods. The study was supervised by Prof.
Joseph Obua, Prof. John David Kabasa and Prof. Dr. Huttermann (R.I.P). Funding was provided
by the KAAD, Germany, The BASF Chemical Company, Germany and the National
Agricultural Research Organization (NARO).

ORIKIRIZA Lawrence Justus Baguma
“Enhancing Tree Performance in Degraded Dryland Soils using Super Absorbent
Polyacrylate Hydrogels”
4. Mr. Orikiriza carried out research on Super Absorbent Polyacrylate (SAP) Hydrogels. These
chemical substances absorb and store water several times their weight and such water may be
slowly extracted when needed. The study focused on assessing strategies for improving the
productivity of degraded dry land forest ecosystems using hydrogels to enhance tree performance
under natural field and controlled conditions, with and without water stress. The research was
motivated by the desire to increase the resilience of important tree species to water stress under
the changing climate. He investigated the effects of SAP Hydrogels on tree species performance.
The results show that the Hydrogels increased tree survival, growth performance and biomass
production in drought prone environments hence tree planting in these environments can be
achieved with the use of hydrogels. The study is valuable to stakeholders engaged in tree
planting for restoration, land rehabilitation, pasture improvement, as well as optimal utilization
of land and production in drought prone environments ultimately contributing to the ecosystem
health and rural livelihoods.

"Distribution solutions to ordinary differential equations with polynomial coefficients on
the real line”
Mr. Mirumbe “lifted” ordinary differential equations with polynomial coefficients on the real
line to the complex plane and used the vast classical results in complex analysis, sheaf theory,
homological algebra, distribution theory and analytic D-module theory to prove that for a class
of locally Fuchsian differential equations, the dimension of the distribution solution space is the
order of the ordinary differential equation plus the sum of all multiplicities of the zeros of the
leading polynomial coefficient of the differential equation. He further proved an existence
Theorem for fundamental solutions to a class of locally Fuchsian differential equations using the
“flag” lemma and theories from linear algebra. This work was funded partly by staff
development (fees waivers) and also the International Science Program (ISP) through its arm the
East African universities Mathematics program (EAUMP). The supervisors were Dr. V.A.
Ssembatya (Director, Quality Assurance Directorate, Makerere University), Prof. Rikard Bogvad
and Prof Jan Erik Bjork both of Stockholm University.

“Phonetic, Distribution and Genetic structure Genetic structure of Acacia senegal (l.) wild.
in Uganda”
Mr. Mulumba Wasswa’s research focused on the taxonomy, diversity distribution and population
structure of the Gum Arabica tree (Acacia senegal). He described the three varieties that occur in
Uganda and developed taxonomic keys for their identification. He mapped the distribution of the
species’ varieties and determined the climatic factors that influence their distribution. He
determined genetic variability in the species and the population structure across the cattle
corridor. The results provide a basis for developing management plans for the species and for
developing the species as an important industrial crop in the cattle corridor and particularly for

NALUKENGE Winnie Nkalubo (Ms)
“Life history traits and growth of Nile perch, Lates niloticus (L.), in Lake Victoria,
Uganda: Implications for management of the fishery.”
Ms. Nkalubo’s research quantified key life history traits of the introduced Nile perch in northern
Lake Victoria (Uganda) with the major goal of providing information to facilitate the
development of predictive sustainable management strategies for this fishery. This study was the
first to validate aging of Nile perch using sagittal otoliths (ear stones) by quantifying the
periodicity and timing of opaque zone formation. Male Nile perch attained maximum size faster
than their female counterparts, while the females reached a much larger size at older ages. A
downward trend in both the age and size at maturity was detected suggesting a shift in
maturation schedule. Overall, size selective mortality and its effects on yield determining traits
seem to be, at least in part, responsible for the changes observed over time in the Nile perch
population.

NYEINGA Edward Drani
"Dynamic Model for Small Scale Concentrating Solar Energy System with Heat Storage'
The research focused on the development of a dynamic model for solar thermal storage systems
at high temperature. The model is based on numerical integration of a set of conservation
equations for mass, momentum and energy of the heat carrier, the rock pebbles and the walls.
The numerical solutions are implemented based on implicit time integration without iterations.
Stability problems at large time steps do not occur. The model predicts pressure, air velocity, air
density and temperatures of the air, rock bed and wall in time and along the container. Nyeinga
has developed a compressive tool that can be used for design and operational studies to aid the
rapid development of a solar oven system with high temperature heat storage. The supervisors
were Professor Eldad E.J.K Banda, Department of Physics, Makerere University and Professor
Ole Jorgen Nydal, Department of Energy and Process Engineering, Norwegian University of
Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway.

"Rock bed thermal energy storage for solar cooking"
"Mr Okello examined the use of rock particles packed in a container for storing thermal energy
that can be used for cooking and for other applications requiring heat in the range of 100 oC to
350 oC. The research was motivated by the desire to design a system that can use solar energy to
cook at any time. The potential of using such systems for solar application in Uganda is
evaluated and it is observed that the northern and eastern parts of the country has highest
6. potential for small domestic systems as well as for other large scale solar industrial applications.
The results shows that rock particles can be used to store heat and both charging and discharging
rates can be varied by varying the airflow speed through the system. The research was supervised
by Professor Eldad Banda and Professor Ole Jorgen Nydal.

“Synthesis and characterization of selected polyoxometallates and their applications in
catalysis”
Mr. Tebandeke developed catalysts that can be applied in the industrial production of useful
chemical products. He designed highly efficient processes for the epoxidation of olefins using
molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide oxidant, catalysed by gold or silver catalysts supported
on polyoxometallates (POMs). He also developed methods for carbon dioxide (CO2) chemical
fixation into epoxides to produce useful cyclic carbonates. In addition, he designed silver
containing POMs for the direct synthesis of cyclic carbonates from olefins and CO2. The
different catalysts can be adapted for large scale industrial production of epoxides and cyclic
carbonates. He wishes to thank his supervisors Prof. Henry Ssekaalo and Prof. Ola F. Wendt for
their guidance. He wishes to acknowledge financial support from IPICS, SIDA and DAAD. He
also acknowledges support from the Principal CONAS, Dean SPS and members of the
Department of Chemistry, Makerere University.

WANYAMA Philip Aaron Guloba
“Characterization and Analysis of Some Natural Dyes from Selected Plants in Uganda”
Mr. Wanyama Aaron’s PhD work focused on extraction and characterization of dyes from
selected plants in Uganda. Thousands of plants in Uganda are potentially rich in natural dye
compounds suitable for textile coloration. They represent a viable alternative to some of the toxic
and environmentally harmful artificial chemical dyes being used in the textile industry today. His
pioneer work in Uganda discovered novel dye compounds present in different plants, especially
those having tannin chromophores in their molecular structures. These natural dyes exhibited
very good colour and surface colour absorption characteristics on cotton fabrics. Through careful
cultivation of these plants for dye extraction and commercialization of their extracts, they offer
sustainable income generating opportunities for many of our people especially those in the rural
communities of Uganda. The study was funded by Kyambogo University under the supervision
of Prof. B.T. Kiremire and Dr. J.E.S. Murumu of the Chemistry Department, Makerere
University.

“Challenges of Domesticating International Human Rights Treaties: A Case Study of the
Convention on the Rights of the Child in Uganda”
7. Mr. Kamya investigated the challenges involved in implementing international human rights
treaties through domestication by contracting states. He sought to minimize the rampant
phenomena of value crash existing between internationally set human rights standards and local
cultures and customs. He employed a case study method, understudying the process of
domesticating the United Nations Convection on the Rights of the Child in Uganda. As a result,
he developed the ‘Participatory Domestication Model’ through which international human rights
values can be harmonized with those of the local communities. This will greatly improve the
realization of human rights in society, both locally and globally. Supervisors: Professor Lillian
Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza and Dr Byaruhanga A. Rukooko. Funders: Ford Foundation

“Education and Moral Building in Uganda; A Case of Selected Secondary Schools in
Bushenyi District, Western Uganda”
Rev. Mujinya set out to establish the relationship between Education and moral building in
Uganda, in selected Secondary Schools in Bushenyi District. She went on find out the
relationship between ethics and postmodernism tends; she further examined the effects of moral
degeneration among the youths. She finally identified challenges facing formal education in
promoting moral behaviour in Uganda. Edidah recommended that the government should
address the motivation of teachers, increase their number, support vocational education, stipulate
regulations on electronic and print media; train and retool school administrators. Above all,
there should be continuous sensitization of parents and guardians about their irreplaceable roles
and responsibilities. She was supervised by Associate Professor, Edward Wamala. She was
financially supported by the Anglican Church of Canada.

MATAGI Leonsio
“Competency, work attitudes and performance of Sub-County chiefs in the Ugandan Local
Government”.
Mr. Matagi conceptualized that if high competency levels predict favorable work attitudes and
performance of district service providers, then the outcome is likely to be good governance under
the decentralized system. The study employed a cross-sectional survey design using both
qualitative and quantitative approaches. Through competency analysis, it was discovered that the
job of a sub-county chief has seven key performance areas of human resource management,
revenue mobilization, monitoring, supervision, budgeting, accountability, and financial
management. Competencies augmented positive attitudes toward work, and derived positive
behaviors and better work outcomes. Competency distinguishes successful employees from the
unsuccessful ones. Work attitudes and work quality can be improved when competencies and job
requirements are closely matched to maximize job fit. Public sector reforms should recognize the
centrality of human resource management, especially the significance of skill management
through the creation of human resource competencies. Mr. Matagi was supervised by Prof. Peter
Baguma and Prof. Murindwa Rutanga, and got funding from I@mak Project.

“Legislative Promotion of Socio-economic Human Rights in Uganda through the Budget
Process”
Mr. Tumukwasibwe explored, through a qualitative methodology, how the Uganda Parliament
used its budget-making powers to shape foreign loans and public budgets to facilitate the
realization of socio-economic human rights of disadvantaged Ugandans. He found that Uganda
Parliament did not use its powers to influence the budget in favor of the disadvantaged
Ugandans. Instead, the primary beneficiaries were western capitalism and the local ruling elites.
Through executive pressure, legislative power was emasculated and disabled from championing
the socio-economic rights of the marginalized Ugandans. Tumukwasibwe contends that until the
disempowering neoliberal fiscal policies are deconstructed, politics democratized and
parliamentary work underpinned with human rights principles, the prospects of the legislature
influencing the budget in favor of the poor will remain a fantasy. The supervisors were Prof.
Murindwa-Rutanga and Prof. Ben Twinomugisha.
