Maps and World Data
!
Do you know how many continents there are? It sounds like an easy
question, but actually there is a lot of debate about the correct answer. !
!
Some people say it’s seven; North America, South America, Europe,
Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica. When your parents went to school, a
lot of people (especially people in English speaking countries) agreed with
this answer.!
!
Now, there are also a lot of people who say there are five; the Americas,
Africa, Eurasia, Oceania, and Antarctica. The reason is because North
America and South America are really one big piece of land. Europe and
Asia is too. There are no oceans separating them. The reason for Oceania
is because the area around Australia also includes New Zealand and other
countries too.!
!
Q When you were a child, which continents system were you taught?!
!
!
!
Q Which system do you think is better? Why?!
First Name: ____________ Last Name: ____________ Student #: ____________ Group: _______
For today, let’s use the 5 continent system for our lesson. !
!
!
!
!
Scroll down to 『World Population by Region』on the map website.
!
!
!
!
What time is it right now?!
!
!
Right now, at this moment, what is the current world population?!
!
!
Which 2 countries have the largest population in the world right now?!
!
!
How big is their population?!
!
!
!
!
!
!
Can you name 2
countries on this
continent?
Can you name 1 thing
that you would like to
see on each of those
continents?

*nice things please
What percent of world
population lives on that
continent?*
the Americas 1)!
2)
Africa 1)!
2)
Eurasia 1)!
2)
Oceania 1)!
2)
Antarctica
!
!
!
Take a look at the line graph showing how population has changed over
human history.!
!
!
Before the 1800’s, what was world population like?!
!
!
What suddenly happens to population in the late 1700’s?!
!
!
What big social change happened all over the world at that time?!
!
!
!
(自分で考えて!) Why did the Industrial Revolution cause the population
of the world to grow so quickly? !
(There are MANY right answers to this question, of course. I want to know what you think.)!
!
!
!
Creating Graphs
!
A bar graph looks like this:        Using a ruler or something to
keep your lines straight. Please neatly draw a bar graph showing when we
reached 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 billion people on Earth. Be sure to label your
x-axis and y-axis in a way that is very clear to read.!
