only 2% of the entire
population of
Australia lives,
meaning the un-
shaded region is
home to 98% of
Australia’s
population.

map-pair demonstrates the
desirability and inhabitability of
the tropics, with their major
intersection hovering over the
Indonesia/Philippines region.

12. • Breaking from the long-held
convention of orienting north as
“up” established by Ptolemy (90-
168 AD), and resulting from the
majority of cartography taking
place in the Northern
Hemisphere, this world map
seems turned on its head (by
orienting south as up). Fun fact:
Evidently in the Middle Ages,
cartographers routinely fixed
east as up, “to orient.”
