This document outlines a research project that aims to analyze representations of space and place in Australia through social media data. The researchers plan to collect geotagged tweets and Instagram posts related to locations in Australia to understand how everyday users portray different areas in their social media content. A pilot study analyzed tweets related to a political summit in Brisbane. The main study will focus on portrayals of the Gold Coast in social media, including during upcoming large events like the Commonwealth Games, to see how the area is represented compared to common stereotypes. The goal is to capture more nuanced, "lived" narratives of space from social media versus singular myths about Australian landscapes.
