2. WHAT ARE MANGROVES
The Shorter Oxford Dictionary
describe the word "mangrove" as
obscurely connected with the
Portuguese word "mangue" and
the Spanish word "mangle" and
the English word "grove" and it
dates its origin as 1613.

3. NEED TO DEVELOP MANGROVES
Mangroves are nature’s way of keeping plant
life in estuaries and inter-tidal zones and
creeks.
Protects and reduces the soil erosion of creeks.
In specific they are the productive centers for
many macro / micro organisms, which are
primary source for marine ecosystem.

4. TYPE OF MANGROVES
The various functional types of mangrove forest can be
briefly described as:
Over wash mangrove forests: These are small islands
covered with mangroves that are frequently washed by the
tides. The dominant species is Rhizophora mangle or the
red mangrove.
Fringing mangrove forests: These strips of mangrove
found along waterways and covered by daily tides. The
dominant species is Rhizophora mangle.
Riverine mangrove forests: These are luxuriant stands of
mangrove along tidal rivers and creek with a good input of
fresh water. Often composed of Rhizophora, Avicennia.

5. TYPE OF MANGROVES
Basin mangrove forests: These are stunted mangroves
located in places such as the interior of swamps. Often
dominated by Avicenia.
Hammock mangrove forests: Similar to basin
mangrove forests but are found in more elevated
sites.
Scrub mangrove forest: A dwarfed stand of mangroves
found on flat coastal fringes.

has rich diversity of mangroves with varied
spread of species distribution

The World Bank consultants have proposed that
DTPS should establish mangroves along the
coast line to develop a good marine eco system
around the plant, accordingly a plan was made
to establish the mangroves around the creeks
surrounding the plant area.

WHETHER IT IS NATURAL OR PLANTED

34. DTPS efforts in mangrove
plantation
Till date more(2010) than 2.1 corers of mangroves
planted.
Survival rate is around 25%.
Given training to more than 5 NGOs on plantation
techniques.
First organization to achieve success in the technique.
Very cheap method of mangrove plantation compared
to NIO technique of making nursery and plantation.
Proves our technique with the unique
experimentation done and demonstrated.
