Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw delayed India's military campaign in 1971 to liberate Bangladesh against the wishes of politicians, based on professional military advice. When the Prime Minister demanded that India enter Pakistan in response to the crackdown in East Pakistan, Manekshaw explained that the military was unprepared for war. He detailed that his forces were dispersed, lacked supplies and equipment, and the monsoon season would hamper operations. Manekshaw told the Prime Minister that he would not start a war without being prepared. The Prime Minister reluctantly agreed to postpone military action until the forces were ready.
