The standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches originated from the wheel ruts formed by Roman war chariots on long distance roads in Europe and England. This gauge was later used for wagon wheels and railroad tracks built in England, and then adopted for US railroads built by English expatriates. The Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters also had to fit through a pre-existing railroad tunnel, continuing the influence of the original Roman chariot wheel spacing on modern engineering and design standards.
