Presentation given by Neil McDermott, Resource Development Officer in Music, University of Glasgow. Presented at the 'Managing Perfomance Data and Documentation' seminar held in Glasgow on 17th February 2011.
Using sales figures is a traditional way for music journalism to understand the industry, but social media, streaming services, and digital outlets now provide a wealth of data on artist popularity and fan behavior. This data, including from sources like Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, and YouTube, can help journalists identify trends, verify assumptions about artists, and show how artists are growing their fan base. As big data changes journalism, music journalists should incorporate relevant numbers while still focusing on the human stories.
The document discusses digitizing the oral history sound recording collection at the State Library of New South Wales. It covers assessing the current analog collection for digitization, planning the process including budget, standards, and metadata collection. The benefits of digitization are preservation of content beyond the physical carrier and improved access and use of the collection through online availability and integration with other digital assets. Digitization requires high quality conversion and long-term management of digital files and associated metadata.
Navigating the Analog Waves: Digitizing Audio Cassettes for Your CollectionKay Gregg
The document outlines the goals and process of a project to digitize and provide online access to audio recordings from the archives of the Quest Club of Fort Wayne, a local lecture society. The project involved setting up a digitization station, creating metadata standards, digitizing the cassette tapes to an archival format, and making the collection available online through a content management system. Key lessons learned included the importance of project management and planning for sustainability beyond the initial project.
This document provides an overview of the EVIA Digital Archive project which aims to digitize, annotate, and provide access to 150 hours of video from 15 ethnomusicologists. It describes the development timeline, technical tools and standards used, and interfaces for searching, browsing, and playing videos. Key phases included planning from 2001-2002, development from 2003-2005, and a 2004 summer institute where contributors segmented and annotated 10 hours of newly digitized video.
This document discusses audio information and media. It outlines learning competencies around describing audio dimensions and how audio is produced and disseminated. It also covers evaluating reliability of audio sources. The document defines types of audio like radio broadcasts, music, and podcasts. It lists ways of storing audio through tapes, CDs, USB drives and cloud storage. Common audio file formats like MP3, WAV and WMA are also defined. A Charlie Chaplin movie clip is provided as an example.

they do that thing in the Fugitive where they record a phone call with the on-the-run doctor and then they say: "What's that in the background? Can you clean that up for me at all?” and a guy twists a few knobs and miraculously they make out the sound of the 24th street bells or something and immediately get a squad of cars round.I want to make the point that at the moment that is complete science fictionbut in the future it may not be and so we have to preserve data gathered now in a lossless format so as to enable future researchers to divine as much as they are able to from it.If the audio was compressed into a crap mp36:26pmgood use of the movie6:26pmthere is no chance that forensic audio improval could do any of that stuff.
