The MALS (Masters in Liberal Studies) program at the University of Delaware offers an interdisciplinary educational experience that emphasizes making connections across fields of learning. UNIMED has learned several lessons from its experiences addressing refugee challenges through projects like RESCUE and inHERE. Second, actions are needed in countries sending refugees to reduce pressure on host communities and rebuild higher education systems affected by crisis. Third, institutional efforts must be better integrated across projects and research to design effective community actions. Activities included workshops, courses led by industry experts, science/art clubs, and an online platform for sharing materials. The goal was to engage more young people through hands-on industry projects and help those having difficulty finding employment.

A presentation I gave at the School of Public Health Education Day conference at Imperial College London on 15th June 2023.
I proposed a collaborative inter-disciplinary initiative (GPS-HE) to reflexively examine the positionality of Imperial College as a powerful STEMM- and biomedical-focussed institution with explicitly global ambitions. Drawing from ethnographic principles and methods we should seek to understand the sociocultural and economic impacts of our global engagements – including the intended, unintended and the unimagined – from the perspectives and lived experiences of those potentially (and actually) affected. A set of ethnographic skills, grounded in core anthropological theoretical frameworks, should be integrated into policy-making and into our educational provision to equip graduates with the tools to critically and qualitatively examine the nature and extent of the local, regional and global impacts of change-making or problem-solving endeavours.

Workshop 5 will address changing models of institutional governance. Workshop 6 will look at the impact and future of the Bologna Process in Europe and beyond. Workshop 7 will explore the involvement of higher education in initiatives like Education for All and the Millennium Development Goals. Workshop 8 will debate how to create a higher education area built on solidarity between institutions globally

MALS Program Card 2014-2015
- 1. The mals program offers a transfor- mative educational experience that emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and innovative course design. Unlike traditional graduate programs, which focus on a single discipline and have specific vocational objectives, the MALS program em- phasizes a multidisciplinary approach to broad questions about culture, ethics, and human experience. MALS students are encouraged to make connections between fields of learning and to pursue their own multidisciplinary interests. MALS students and alumni represent a wide range of occupations. They are physicians, teachers, lawyers, homemakers, government administrators, chemical engineers, university employees, and retirees. As one student com- mented “You will have the opportunity to learn not only from the excellent professors at UD but also from your fellow students.” An Alumna echoes the thought: “The students who enroll in the program come from all walks of life and are a huge part of what makes MALS classes so stimulating.” TRANSformative Michele Walfred, who completed from the MALS Program in 2014, created the website Illustrating Chinese Exclusion: Thomas Nast’s cartoons of Chinese Americans.
