8. Antioxidants
Keeping the Immune system strong.
• Antioxidant supplementation can essentially reverse immune
deficiencies related to age.
• They can elevate numbers of lymphoctes and T-cells.
• They can also increase killer cell activity.

Editor's Notes
Hello my name is Ryan Mallory. I am a nutrition student at ASU and today I would like to talk about Keeping the Immune system strong. A few categories I would like to touch on today are, inflammation, antioxidants and maintenance.
It is believed that inflammation is caused by disease. There are even some who speculate it is the other way around, that inflammation causes disease. The tissues become inflamed, this then causes the blood vessels to dilate, which allows helper cells to become mobile and begin to help with various needs of the body in that specific region. It is a necessary system for the body to heal itself. However, gone unchecked it may lead to trouble.
Inflammation is a dichotomy in the sense that it is both a natural helpful process and it is also believed to be harmful. Inflammation becomes harmful once it goes unchecked, or it has no anti inflammatory process to switch it off. This is why anti-inflammatory supplements are advised to so many Americans. Chronic inflammation is believed to lead to disease.
Inflammation has been linked to so many other diseases. Some of them include heart disease, Alzheimer's, and cancer just to name a few. Acute inflammation is a natural and healthy process which helps the body fight, repair, and rebuild. However, when inflammation becomes chronic this is when disease is believed to be introduced. Strong immune systems have inflammation processes that start up correctly as well as ones that stop correctly.
Most experts agree that adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Remember once lost, not all sleep can be caught up.No matter the age, life brings its accompanying stressors. Learn to cope and manage your stress. One of the most effective methods of coping is to discuss your problems with someone you trust. Be careful not to dump your problems on somebody else, but simply look for some friendly counsel.Exercise to some this is the holy grail of healthy living. Exercise has been proven to improve nearly all dimensions of health. Exercise can also improve attitude and increase both the amount and quality we sleep. Healthy bodies which are physically strong, are also strong at fighting off illness.
This is important because obesity is can lead to increased oxidative stress. The United states is in a dangerous place. Over the past few decades American’s weight has been increasing dramatically. Americans now more than ever need to reconsider diet and healthy behavior changes. An unbelievable 2% of the population is underweight. What do you think is causing this huge increase in weight? A clinical review of free radicals, anti oxidants and the immune system found that vitamin D and C are extremely beneficial to the body. Vitamin D defficiency has been linked to many diseases. Vitamin C is a strong anti oxidant which reduces the duration of the common cold. It also inhibits peroxidation of the membrane phospholipids.ReferencesShaik-Dasthagirisaheb, Y. B., Varvara, G., Murmura, G., Saggini, A., Caraffa, A., Antinolfi, P., . . . Pandolfi, F. (2013). Role of vitamins D, E and C in immunity and inflammation. Clinical reviews suggest that antioxidants reverse deficiencs related to age. A few of the other perks that vitamin C can provide include: increasing antibody response to antigen stimulation, decreased lipid peroxidation and decreased prostaglandin synthesis. They have also been found to increase levels of interluken-2..
I would like to take this time to answer questions.
All in all the body is in great need for antioxidants especially in today's life with today's diet. Remember to take care of your body and supplement with antioxidants. Your immune system will thank you.
