Malaysiakini was launched in 1999 with 6 staff and RM400,000 in startup funds. It has since grown to 100 staff and reaches 2.5 million readers across English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil platforms. The company was the first to provide independent political news in Malaysia and has remained committed to its mission of being an accountable and transparent source of information for Malaysians demanding democracy. Looking ahead, Malaysiakini seeks to rebuild and further its work through advertising, partnerships, investments, social innovation, and media sponsorship.
