Facilitative Leadership: Guiding Teams to Success - WebExpo19Alissa Briggs

We often picture “leaders” as people who stand at the front of a room, wielding their authority to tell people what to do. But "facilitative leadership" looks quite different. Facilitative leaders are usually found standing in front of a whiteboard, inviting teams to help them figure out what to do. This results in better solutions, stronger team performance, and a healthier culture of collaboration. In this talk, you’ll learn powerful facilitation techniques that will help you to become a facilitative leader and guide your teams to success.

We all dream of working in organizations where design is respected, valued and impactful. What if we could actually make that dream a reality?
Two years ago, the design team at PlanGrid was understaffed and hamstrung. Today, the team has tripled in size and is treated as a strategic partner and the customer-centric “conscience” of the company. This has empowered the team to create software experiences that are radically transforming people’s lives. Learn how they achieved this while navigating the chaos of a fast-paced organization.
This talk will introduce the Vision Map: a tool for transforming and empowering your design team. You’ll learn how to get alignment on your vision, assemble your team, and choose the right tactics. You’ll hear examples of how we applied this at PlanGrid, along with practical tips and real-world stories.
By the end of this session, you’ll know how to:
-Identify where your organization is at today and where it needs to go
-Assemble the right team and allies to accompany you on your journey
-Choose the right tactics to reach your vision
This talk is accompanied by worksheets and resources you can use with your team, which will also be made available online. You’ll leave with everything you need to chart your course to the design team of your dreams.

Architecting Your UX Career: Interview and Presentation Techniques to Land Yo...UXPA International
Approaching a job search can be a daunting task for any professional, but the UX world has a unique set of challenges. Our field is still relatively new, job titles and responsibilities are fuzzy, and there are varying understandings of what we can and should provide. There is no one clear path or set of experience that sets us up for success. Deliverables are often collaborative, covered by NDAs, and it can be hard to capture the many facets of UX expertise into a small set of documents. So how do we navigate the world of resume-writing, portfolio-creation, and interviewing to find a job that will be the best fit for the skills we currently have and allow us to grow into the practitioner we want to become? Get the inside scoop from a current UX consultant and former interactive designer, both of whom are experienced with vetting UX talent.

UX Australia 2018 - Making 'Sticky' Design Principles - Amirul NasirAmirul Nasir (Rul)
Having clear and established design principles within product teams helps to keep everyone to remain focused on a clear vision as to what makes our product unique, and it also serves as a decision-making tool during the design process.
One of my biggest frustrations while working with design principles from past experiences, is that we tend to forget about them, and that it can be challenging to keep them at the front of our minds day to day, from one feature to another. Sure – they exist somewhere within the project rooms up on the wall, uploaded on file storage systems, and on our minds. However, none of those approaches seem to be effective. Could there be a better way in keeping our design principles to the front of our product team members’ minds?
In this talk, I’ll cover the importance of making ‘sticky’ design principles and I will be sharing with you how I tackled this problem in ensuring that they stay stuck using a recent project of mine as an example.

No time, no money, no mandate: User research in the public sector #SXC15Simone Carrier
Being a designer in the public sector is challenging. To make real change we need to adjust our everyday practise to meet the requirements of bureaucratic and sometimes even hostile environments our clients operate in. So how can you do user research if the answer of your clients is always: We don’t have a budget, there is no time and what if it goes wrong? Get inspired by some of the quick and dirty tools and techniques to make sure that your designs are based on user needs and tested with real people – even if you don’t have the time, money or the mandate.
