Meaning is not delivered to us on silver platters. We must be equipped as readers, writers, viewer, listeners, investigators to excavate it...dig it out. The cornerstone tool in our metacognitive arsenal is the ability to make inferences.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is based on several key principles: 1) thoughts influence emotions and behaviour, 2) behaviour also influences thoughts and emotions, 3) mental health problems are exaggerations of normal cognitive and behavioural processes. CBT focuses on identifying and modifying dysfunctional thoughts and behaviours in the present. Techniques include cognitive restructuring like identifying cognitive distortions, behavioural experiments, and modifying core beliefs through empirical testing. Physical techniques like relaxation can also be used.

- 2. To make an inference is to use an educated guess to get to the implied meaning of something. You have to know how to make an inference on most standardized tests, so it's good to practice! Try your hand at making inferences with the following photos. In other words, take a guess at what's going on - the motives, situations, thoughts , or actions of the people/animals/objects involved. Use the evidence in the pictures to guide you. What's Going On in This First Picture?

- 4. This one's pretty easy, right? Take your best educated guess. What's Going On in This Picture?

- 6. Here's the last one. What have you learned? Were your inferences based on the facts of the photo? Sometimes, you can come to more than one conclusion about the picture, but usually, there's one idea that's really coming across, and that's the correct inference to make.
