Hurlburt Field in Florida to Undergo Energy Efficiency UpgradesPamela Berkowsky
A respected expert in defense and national security, Pamela Berkowsky has decades of federal and territorial government experience and has recently been certified as a Climate Communicator by the CLEO Institute. As the President of Blue Sapphire Strategies, a Miami-based public affairs and business consultancy, Pamela Berkowsky serves as a senior executive defense consultant to the South Florida Defense Alliance (www.southfloridadefensealliance.org). Her SFDA work focuses primarily on resiliency and the national security implications of climate change, particularly the impacts on U.S. military installations, personnel, readiness, and operations. In mid-2021, the US Defense Department (DOD) announced that it would undertake a comprehensive upgrade of energy infrastructure at Hurlburt Field, the Destin, Florida military base which hosts the headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command (HQ AFSOC). The Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC), awarded by the Defense Logistics Agency – Energy, provides Schneider Electric Buildings Americas with a $22.6 million task order to bring Hurlburt Fields’s infrastructure up to standard, aiming to ensure that grid stability and critical power supply needs are fully met. The work is also expected to have a positive budgetary impact, with $1.5 million in annual energy savings forecast across the 22-year contract term – a projected annual 17.7% reduction in energy costs. The project is one of a new breed of long term ESPC contracts that strive to boost facility efficiency while also improving mission readiness and 24/7 energy reliability. Among the upgrades spanning more than 375 structures planned at Hurlburt Field are a canopy solar PV system that will supply 240kW of electricity, airfield LED lighting upgrades, enhanced HVAC capacity, and duct sealing. In addition, a microgrid control-outfitted battery energy system with 200kW/112kWhr storage capacity will boost operational resilience and help ensure mission-critical reliability. Construction is projected for completion in early 2023 and will significantly enhance HQ AFSOC’s stability and resiliency.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular zoonotic protozoan parasite, infect both humans and animals population worldwide. It can also cause abortion and inborn disease in humans and livestock population. In the present study total of 313 domestic animals were screened for Toxoplasma gondii infection. Of which 45 cows, 55 buffalos, 68 goats, 60 sheep and 85 shaver chicken were tested. Among these 40 (88.88%) cows were negative and 05 (11.12%) were positive. Similarly 55 (92.72%) buffalos were negative and 04 (07.28%) were positive. In goats 68 (98.52%) were negative and 01 (01.48%) was recorded positive. In sheep and shaver chicken the infection were not recorded.

34. Case study: SMart Wind (4,000MW)
SMart Wind was established as a joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power
and Siemens Project Ventures in 2009 to bid in The Crown Estate’s Round 3 offshore wind
farm programme. Subsequently, it was awarded the 4GW Hornsea zone in 2010. The
Hornsea Zone has the potential to provide electricity to meet approximately 4% of all
electricity demand in the UK and power approximately 3 million homes. The total zone
area is 4,735km with water depths across the zone between 30 and 40m, with maximum
depths to 70m.
In February 2015, DONG Energy acquired Project One and following that, DONG Energy
acquired the remainder of the Zone on 21 August 2015.

Jeffreys Bay
The Jeffreys Bay wind farm was submitted to the South African Government’s Renewable
Energy Procurement Programme as part of a consortium (see below). The project was
awarded preferred bidder status by the Department under the first round of programme
and reached commercial operation on 15 May 2014.
The Jeffreys Bay wind farm is one of the first and largest wind farms in South Africa and will
assist in meeting the every-increasing demand for electricity in South Africa. At the peak of
construction, employment surged to some 650 on site. The wind farm will generate enough
electricity to power over 110,000 typical South African households.

Droogfontein
The 50MW Droogfontein solar park was submitted into Round 1 of the South African
Government’s Renewable Energy Procurement Programme as part of a consortium. It was
awarded preferred bidder status by the Department under the programme and reached
commercial operation date in 06 April, 2014.
The project is located in the Northern Cape and supplies the Eskom gridline with 85,458 MWh
per year – enough electricity to meet the needs of 20,000 average South African households.

communities in its vicinity.

38. Case study: Cuel wind farm
Cuel
The Cuel wind farm is located 560kms south of Santiago, close to Los Ángeles city in the Bío Bío region of
Chile. Mainstream fully developed the project in association with local authorities, municipalities and the
community. Construction of all 22 turbines was completed Q1, 2014 and, in February 2014, the project
started to generate power. Aela Energía, the joint venture company between Mainstream and Actis is fully
responsible for the Cuel project and it is the first in its 600MW pipeline.

The Oldman 2 wind farm is located in Alberta, Canada. The wind farm is Mainstream’s
first project in Canada. Construction started on the wind farm on 23 September 2013 and
it reached commercial operation date on 5 September 2014.
At the point of generating electricity, IKEA purchased the plant. As part of the agreement
with IKEA, Mainstream provide O&M for the lifetime of the wind farms.
The wind farm has a capacity factor of 40.9% and some 107,120,000 kg of Co2 is avoided

40. Case study: Carrickeeny wind farm
Carrickeeny
Carrickeeny wind farm is located in County Leitrim in the North West of Ireland. The wind farm
is Mainstream’s second project in Ireland. Mainstream took the project over at the late
development stage and following construction was sold to IKEA. Mainstream will continue to
operate and maintain the wind farm on behalf of IKEA for it’s 20 year lifespan.
The wind farm is connected to the Irish national grid in Manorhamilton substation via 10km of
overhead line. Annually the plant will avoid the release of 13,270 tons of CO2 from fossil fuel
power generation.

Mainstream entered the Irish wind market in 2011 with the acquisition of Caherciveen Wind
Limited which was developing the 9MW Knockaneden wind farm located in County Kerry in
South-West Ireland.
Mainstream managed the construction of the wind farm which consists of four Enercon
turbines. In January 2013, the Knockaneden wind farm reached commercial operation and it
is operated and maintained by Mainstream for Caherciveen Wind Limited.
A wind farm community fund was set up by Mainstream and is awarded each year to local
community groups and projects, particularly those with a focus on sustainability. The
community fund will be distributed for the lifetime of the project. Annually the plant will
avoid the release of 13,270 tons of CO2 from fossil fuel power generation.

42. Case study: Neart na Gaoithe

Neart na Gaoithe
The 450MW Neart na Gaoithe wind farm is being developed off the east coast of Scotland.
When built it will provide enough electricity to power the city of Edinburgh –
approximately 325,000 homes.
The project has reached a number of milestones including receipt of onshore consent from
East Lothian Council (June 2013) and Offshore consent from the Scottish Government
(October 2014). Also in 2014, new floating offshore wind measurement device completed
validation at the offshore wind farm.
Neart na Gaoithe was awarded a CfD by the UK government in February 2015 and is
expected to be generating electricity and fully commissioned by 2020.
