The government of India is considering a proposal to create a national policy for domestic workers that would provide them basic rights and benefits. The policy would make it mandatory for households to hire domestic help through placement agencies. Those who hire domestic workers outside this system could be penalized as it would be considered bonded labor. The labor ministry plans to soon propose this policy to the cabinet. If passed, it would make employers liable for workers' social security and propose benefits like one month of paid annual leave and two days of paid maternity leave per month. Employers and employees would have to sign contracts outlining standard practices through these placement agencies.
