Community Coalition Building: Planning
Over the past few months this column as
discussed coalition development focusing on
the Assessment, Capacity, Sustainability and
Cultural Competence steps of the Strategic
Prevention Framework (SPF) developed
by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
and implemented by the Community Anti-
Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA). This month’s column
will continue to focus on the Planning step. The SPF is based
on the public health model which works to reduce social or
health problems in the larger community by implementing
comprehensive, multi-strategy approaches rather than focusing
efforts strictly on high risk populations.
Theories of Change
A theory of change describes the types of strategies to be used by
the coalition to accomplish its mission. It summarizes a process
of considering “if-then” relationships between the problem
identified during the assessment and the course of action that
the coalition will take to address the problem. For example, a
coalition seeking to reduce alcohol use by high school students
might consider the following “if-then” relationships:
• If the coalition invests time and money into educating
alcohol merchants in the community that it is illegal to
sell alcohol to minors, then access to alcohol is likely to
decrease; and
• If the coalition educates parents about monitoring
teenage parties and offering non-alcoholic drinks, then
access to alcohol is likely to decrease.
These if-then statements assume that:
• A community can change the availability of alcohol to
young people;
• Reducing the availability of alcohol is an effective strat-
egy to combat underage drinking;
• Delaying the initiation of alcohol use will decrease the
early onset of drinking.
The coalition’s theory of change might be:
“ When a community works together and
implements multiple strategies that address
the accessibility to alcohol in a comprehensive
manner, young adults will use less alcohol ”.
Logic Models
Logic models are diagrams that identify the problems found during
the assessment phase, their root causes, and the local conditions
that either enable or discourage the development of the identified
problems. A logic model identifies the problem, strategies,
activities, and outcomes.
A sample logic model might look something like this example:
Strategic Plans and Action Plans
Strategic plans include the policies, strategies and practices that
create a logical, data-driven plan to address the problems identified
during the Assessment phase. Action plans are related to the
Capacity phase and ensure that all coalition members are involved
in carrying out the coalition’s work, have sufficient support, and
are held accountable for their assignments. We will include a
discussion of these types of plans in the next issue.

Interest in crafting the Native American flute has grown steadily since the 1980s, but
reliable, specific crafting instruction has been as scarce to come by as reliable accounts
of its history and development. Now there’s Native American Flute Craft, a fully-
illustrated manual for crafting Native American flutes.
In 2012, Cooperative Ink published C.S. Fuqua’s The Native American Flute: Myth,
History, Craft, which explored the instrument’s true history and mythology while
also providing a section on crafting, geared primarily to experienced woodworkers.
In response to suggestions from readers, Cooperative Ink announces publication of
Fuqua’s Native American Flute Craft, an in-depth manual for crafters of all levels to
build the Native American flute, from the ancient Anasazi flute to the modern two-
chamber flute, from the traditional to the drone, contrabass, and more. Easy-to-follow
illustrated instructions provide thorough direction to crafting personalized instruments
from a variety of materials, including wood, bamboo, and PVC.
Watch the Youtube book trailer at http://youtu.be/Cp_-sQK4aT4.
Native American Flute Craft is now available in print and electronic editions. The
print edition will be available within the next few days as local and online stores update
their systems.
Native American flute craftsman C.S. Fuqua has published extensively on the history
and craft of the Native American flute. Native American Flute Craft is his second book
on the subject, providing in-depth, illustrated instructions for crafting one of the most
beautiful sounding instruments ever invented. A former newspaper reporter, magazine
editor, and book editor, he has published widely in nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, with
thirteen books currently in print. He has also released three CDs in the WindPoem ~
Native American Flute Meditations series. Connect with him on Twitter (@CSFuqua)

Self Imposed Apartheid
When communities of color were
segregated from the dominant so-
ciety by custom and law, a cohe-
sion existed within the communi-
ties of color. The members of the
segregated community were forced
to interact intimately and mutu-
ally support each other across all
educational,economic,religious and
other differences.
This segregation resulted in strong social inter-
course and support. It depended on all of the mem-
bers of the community contributing.
Doctors, janitors, cooks, teachers, cleaning women,
ministers and laborers all shared the same economy,
space, and value to the dominant outside commu-
nity. The geographic proximity of segregation pro-
vided some unnoticed but valuable resources. First
the opportunity to interact with a wide cross section
of people and professions. Community activities were
shared. Role models of all types were accessible to all
of the youth. There was a strong sense of kinship and
communal pride and responsibility These attributes
were latent because the segregated members were
constantly made to feel inferior to the dominant com-
munity.
When desegregation occurred, the professional,
educated, economically well off and ambitious mem-
bers of the segregated group were eager to prove
their value by living productively amongst the domi-
nant culture. They did not realize the difficulty of be-
ing accepted as an equal by a dominant group or the
harm that their absence would impose on their parent
community.
The sense of efficacy that existed in the parent
community no longer existed. They were often viewed
as a forced member in the dominant culture.
The members of the parent community began to
immediately feel the loss of their talented and under-
standing professional resources.
Strong empowering role models were no longer
readily accessible. Even when the former members of
the segregated group encountered each other it was
a stressful encounter because the former role and re-
source model appears to not want their former mem-
ber of their parent group reminding them of their past
segregated and inferior status. Consequently a class
distinction was created that separated the "perceived
productive member" from the perceived "less produc-
tive members of the segregated group" who remained
in the "old hood"
A third context of the apartheidic imposition results
from super rich status of some artist, athletes wealthy
and celebrities that have been catapulted even be-
yond the two desegregated sectors. This township
removes itself in an unorthodox way. Generally only
wealth is a factor. They are nonetheless another dis-
tinct township.
Desegregation in the U.S. was intended to inte-
grate black and white. Self imposed apartheid owes
its existence to African Americans .failure to realize
the potential power of their cultural unity and their
continued dependence on the dominant community
for proof of value or worth.
Those at the financial, talent, and celebrity pentacle
are lonely insecure and vulnerable in their self im-
posed townships.
Those in the professional levels feel impotent in the
dominant culture despite their ability because they
can detect the latent prejudice that surrounds them.
They often deny it even as they participate in perpe-
trating on others in their cultural group.
These are the ones who are quick to say their cul-
ture is diverse and not monolithic to divorce them-
selves from other members of their parent culture.
This behavior and distance is apparent to the other
members of the other intercultural members and they
too utilize it when It is convenient for them.
This process results in a loss of accu-
rate judgement,positive support,potential
power, psychological comfort and may lead to deterio-
ration.
Apartheid, no matter how it is induced, is not good.
We should resist it in any form, anywhere.

Angela Merkel Is Now The Leader Of The
Free World Because Donald Trump Is Not
The US President isn’t
motivated by protecting
liberal democracy
or freedom, his sole
ideology is Trumpism:
corporate autocracy
with a populist facade.
While he tries to enrich
his family to the fullest
during his term, he surrounds himself with
white nationalists even more hostile to liberal
democracy than he is.
The thrice-elected, soft-spoken former
scientist from East Germany, with a doctorate in
quantum chemistry, doesn’t just carry the weight
of Germany and Europe on her shoulders, but
that of defending freedom and liberalism across
the whole world.
This is not an attempt to be provocative or
exaggerate for effect. Donald Trump cannot
claim the mantle of “leading” the free world
by doing nothing positive for it. America’S
military might is not the only criteria necessary.
Diplomacy matters too.
The title requires the President to be committed
to the values of liberal democracy. But unlike all
other U.S. President since the Second World War,
Notably Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, it is already
clear that Trump has no such inclinations. He is
heading, at terrifying speed with the Military-
Industrial Complex, in the opposite direction.
Is there any doubt about this? Since his
inauguration Trump has undermined and ignored
judges, even though an independent judiciary and
a separation of powers is key to a democracy.
But the ban on Muslims immigrants
highlighted something far more draconian. If a
President can abruptly restrict the rights of US
residents without bothering with lawmakers or
even government departments, he is in effect an
autocrat.
That is exactly what Trump did and will
continue to do so. His actions don’t just
undermine the rights of all Americans, they
undermine the institutions that support American
democracy.
Which is why we in the African American
Lawyers Association of Hawaii supported State
Attorney General Douglas Chin’ law suits for
Injunctions to stop the Trump anti-Muslim travel
to the U.S. bans. Which target nations which
never attacked the U.S. and harms Hawaii tourism
it’s Universities and many other businesses.
Then there is Trump’s assault on international
trade and cooperation. He is already threatening
Mexico, Australia, China and now the EU. Who
will be next? He refused a request to shake
German Chancellor, Angela Merkel’ hand in
public.
It has been learned that globalization does
not benefit U.S. workers and business owners
succeed. Anyone who cares about the proper
and legitimate functioning of our American
democracy must oppose Judge Gorsuch’S
nomination, not because he is unqualified, but
because of the undermining of our American
democracy by Senate Republicans. Anyone who
cares about the rule of law should oppose this
nomination.
In light of the recent FBI revelation of it’s
investigation into Trump Campaign operatives
contacts with Russian hackers seeking to
poison the American election for their preferred
candidate Donald Trump, all action on the
Gorsuch nomination should cease.
If we fail to take this stand, the Senate
Republicans will have succeeded in placing
a justice onto our highest Court who has no
business being there. They will have undermined
the credibility of the Supreme Court as an
institution, an institution that is critical to the
functioning of our Constitution.
The Democrats and any responsible
Republicans in the Senate should oppose Judge
Gorsuch’S nomination, and invoke the filibuster
if necessary. The nomination should then be
withdrawn, and the president should nominate
in his place a genuinely moderate justice who is
acceptable to Democrats and Republicans alike.
Only then can we move forward with a sense of
institutional integrity.
Short of that, every decision of the Court
decided by a margin of five-to-four with Neil
Gorsuch in the majority will justifiably be
castigated as fundamentally illegitimate. The
failure to oppose this nomination on these
scrutinies would signify a profound lack of
courage and a failure to stand up for the central
precepts of our American democracy.
equally. And while international trade is a global
good, only a fool would deny that it can only
work if done on an equal, rules-based footing.
But Trump doesn’t care for those, he is ripping
up international agreements so he can bully
smaller countries into submission. That sets a
dangerous precedent for the entire world.
And lastly there is the Trump administration’s
hostility towards the media. Regardless of its
bias, a thriving democracy needs a media willing
to challenge the government. Trump isn’t just
hostile to criticism, in his warped world it must
be driven by lies and vindictiveness. He is
wracked by deep insecurity. When his chief aide
Steve Bannon says the media should “keep
its mouth shut” – they mean it. They don’t
want a free media criticizing them at all. These
are words that dictators use, not democrats. Well
guess what. Intolerant statement like that focus
even more media scrutiny on these would be
tyrants, who intend to role back U.S. Civil Rights
Laws.
Having grown up in communist East Germany
before German re-unification, Angela Merkel is
the polar opposite of Trump. She doesn’t just
recognize the sounds of autocracy, she chose to
escape it.
Senator McConnell had the audacity to
maintain that the “people” should decide who
should fill this current year old vacancy on the
Supreme Court. By employing his duplicitous
strategy, he managed to shift this appointment
from President Obama, who had won the popular
vote by a margin of five million votes in 2012, to
Trump who lost the popular vote by a margin of
three million votes in 2016. That is just not right.
This crass and unprincipled manipulation
of our democracy should not be allowed to
12. RIP Chuck Berry
Charles Edward Anderson
"Chuck" Berry
(October 18, 1926 – March 18, 2017)
was an American guitarist, singer and
songwriter and one of the pioneers of
rock and roll music. With songs such
as "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over
Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll
Music" (1957) and "Johnny B. Goode"
(1958), Berry refined and developed
rhythm and blues into the major
elements that made rock and roll
distinctive. Writing lyrics that focused
on teen life and consumerism, and
developing a music style that included
guitar solos and showmanship, Berry
was a major influence on subsequent
rock music.

Leading off with an auspicious start, Mike Patrick knew as a
child “I could always vaguely see myself being an actor or model
or a host even, as a child there was nothing I did not believe I could
do if I wanted, and I still feel that way.” Being an athletic superstar
in his youth laid the foundation for always seeking excellence.
With a flawless physic, killer smile, and dazzling personality that
emanates in any arena he steps into. From athletics to acting, how
did you transition from being on the court to being in-front of the
camera? “My best friend was the first person to introduce me to
real opportunities where I could actually say okay I’m a host or ac-
tor or model. My best friend provided my first hosting opportunity,
acting, and first published spread in a magazine.”
In 2010 Mike started hosting a show entitled, A Taste of Honey
TV, which entertains, educates, and inspires the viewer about the
media and entertainment industry. Mike Patrick recalls his days of
hosting the show, “Huh, I would say my first year or so of hosting
when I look back at some of those old interviews I conducted I
realize I become much better and I was definitely a work in prog-
ress at the time, don’t get me wrong I didn’t do a bad job, but there
was definitely room for progress and that remains true now and
forever.”
An ever-growing insatiable appetite for improving on his skills is
a motif throughout Michael’s career. “I am constantly getting bet-
ter, life is about progress every day I analyze things I have done in
the past and look at ways I could have done it better and I make
adjustments from there.”
“Kool Chaos” is Mike Patrick’s style. “I don’t like being mar-
ginalized so I allow myself the freedom to switch my style I am
constantly evolving.” Galvanized by creativity Mike continues to
evolve. “Thoughts of a legacy, every time I create, I like to think
about the fact that I am creating something that can be referenced
long after I’m gone, my legacy, my contribution, my ability to be an
inspiration to others and a positive model.” Besides being inspired
by friends “I just always have fun with the arts, so doing one thing
was inspiration enough to do the next.”
When asked about the highlight of his career he stated, “I think
my best days are ahead of me. Acting wise I would say my role in
the film The Substitutes, Modeling I don’t know, maybe VA Fashion
Week.” The hardest part being, “Just the part of not being able to
completely support myself via the arts, so I still have to work jobs
that I’m not passionate about, I look forward to the day that is not
the case.” The strength and insight to continue through these un-
warranted times for Mike is “Gratitude”.
Mike is an advantageous, adventurous, and astute individual
headed to many great places. Giving us a few pointers on breaking
into the biz, please take notes. “Persistence and independence, if
someone won’t give you an opportunity then create one.” Well, put
Michael Patrick, short, sweet, and simple…straight to the point.
Michael just added writer to his extensive triage of talents. We
have added one of his articles from his newly created blog “pros-
perhealthdot.org” enjoy his first blog post entitled, “Youthing: Mak-
ing A Better Person To Suite A Better World.”Since the beginnings
of time, man has always sought ways to extend and enhance his
life. Alexander the Greek crossed the land of darkness to find the
spring he believed to be the fountain of youth. The Pope Innocent
VIII was said to have consumed the blood of young boys in the late
1400’s in order to put a halt on aging. Are you familiar with Eliza-
beth Bathory? Bathory was a Countess who was documented for
the killings of her youthful servant girls, she believed that if she
bathed in their blood she would retain a youthful appearance.
While the previous examples may seem extreme, to say the
least, we now know through the discovery of modern science and
spirituality that there are more practical ways to prolong and in-

crease value to one’s life. But, what is youthing? And, what is the
ultimate goal of a youther, lastly what would be the point of reach-
ing that goal? I define youthing as a lifestyle practice that is dedi-
cated to preserving the youthful functions and appearance of the
body in order to add value to a person’s life so they can contribute
to the advancement of the world. The end of that definition is very
important, I will restate it, (in order to add value to a person so they
can contribute to the advancement of the world). Does one youth
vainly just for cosmetic reasons? Should a person youth simply for
the fear of death?
While the previous question may be answered with a yes by
some, I like to give a much less shallow motivation for a person to
practice youthing. I propose that the decision to live a lifestyle of
youthing should be motivated by the ability to be expressive in life.
There is no reason to extend life if you intend to not offer anything
to the advancement of our world.
Now, what does being expressive mean? Meaning, life is a gift
from God that gives us the willpower to express all that can be.
As people we have infinite potential to learn, to teach, to share,
and to be creative, etc. This gives us true purpose in life only if we
choose to pursue our potentials. If we decide to remain stagnant,
uninspired, and without motivation to assist in bringing change to a
constantly changing world, then we will have no reason to prolong
life, and it makes sense why most wither away in despair when this
is the case, you are not being useful! Like a tool that sits without
being used, it begins to rust. You don’t use it you lose it, this is ap-
plicable to the gift of life as well.
When we are constantly evolving, and maximizing a certain po-
tential in order to move on to realizing a new potential, for this one
should be considered a youther. Because, as long as you are mo-
tivated to continue moving forward and advancing yourself along
with advancing our world, then it makes sense and serves a pur-
pose to stay as youthful, vibrant and healthy in doing so until you
have a full cup.
I’ll close by saying be a youther with purpose, add on to a forever
evolving world. Discover new things, do different things, constantly
recreate yourself and the world we live in. May you never grow old!

Get Yourself Together by Getting Your Health Together
From the book New Jump Swing Healthy Aging and Athletic Nutrition Program
by Donald “Spiderman” Thomas
Health and Fitness
by Donald
“Spiderman” Thomas
A study by researchers at the Pennington
Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, analyzed data from about 80,000
Americans participating in the American
Time Use Survey and found that while almost 80% engaged in
light activities, such as driving a car or getting dressed, most did
not engage in any moderate or vigorous activity on any given
day. Just more than 10% reported lawn, garden, or houseplant
care; and only 2.2% reported using exercise equipment and
1.1% running. The most common nonwork, nonsleeping activity
reported was eating and drinking!
About 24,000 soldiers were discharged between 1992 and
2007 for failure to comply with weight standards, according
to a military fitness report. Weight can kill military careers,
making them ineligible for promotions, leadership positions, or
professional military schools.
Less than 10% of high school students consume the
recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily. Less than
one-third meet the recommended levels of physical activity.
According to research that’s come out of a ten-year study by
the MacArthur Foundation, only about one-third of physical aging
and one-half of age-related changes in mental function are built
into our genes. Much of what’s considered “usual aging” can
in fact be prevented through a well-developed and adhered-to
diet, avoidance of overexposure to the sun, and effective stress
management and exercise that keep bones, muscles, and brain
cells strong.
The 2010 edition of the Journal of Internal Medicine cites
the study of an international group of researchers who tracked
nearly 5,000 British adults for twenty years to study the effect of
practicing four bad lifestyle behaviors at once on human aging.
“Bad” was defined as being a smoker, while nonsmokers and
former smokers were not. Men who consumed more than twenty-
one eight-gram servings of alcohol and women who drank more
than fourteen servings of alcohol per week were considered
“bad.” Anyone who got less than 120 minutes of exercise each
week was defined as having poor physical activity, and bad diets
were those that contained less than three servings of fruits or
vegetables each day. The average age of the participants was
forty-three years old. The researchers found that Britons who
indulged in all four bad behaviors were 3.5 times more likely
to die over the course of the study than those who practiced a
healthier lifestyle. That included a 3 times greater risk of death
from cardiovascular disease, a 3 times greater risk of death from
cancer, and a 4.5 times greater risk of death from any other
cause.
Overall, 96% of those with healthy behaviors were alive
at the end of the study, compared with 85% of those with the
worst health habits. “The increase in mortality risk from none
to four poor health behaviors was equivalent to an increase in
chronological age of about twelve years.”
In 2005, at least twenty-nine countries had infant mortality
rates lower than those in the United States, compared with
only eleven of the same countries compared in 1960; and life
expectancy for both men and women is higher in many other
developed countries than in the United States. In 2004, the
United States ranked twenty-third in life expectancy at birth for
men and twenty-fifth for women; the United States ranked ninth
for men and women in life expectancy at sixty-five years of age.
In 2006, American men could expect to live 3.6 years longer
and women 1.9 years longer than they did in 1990. Mortality
from heart disease, stroke, and cancer has continued to decline
in recent years. Infant mortality, one major component of overall
life expectancy, declined through 2001 and has changed little
since then.
According to the American Cancer Society, about a third of the
550,000 American cancer deaths each year are linked to obesity,
poor diet, and inactivity. Another third are due to smoking. In
other words, one of the biggest contributors to cancer risk is
lifestyle—and that’s something over which you have control.
“Forty percent of breast cancer cases in the U.S.—about
70,000 cases a year—could be prevented by changes in
behavior,” says Susan Higginbotham, director of research for the
American Institute for Cancer Research.
From these statistics, you can see that improving the health
span as well as life span is neither a magic act nor a sci-fi fantasy.
I have been a vegetarian since 1972, when I was nineteen
years old. I’ve never been diagnosed with anemia or any other
nutritional deficiency disease. In the process of seeking out
a solution for my personal health problems, I developed this
program. I have been the patient of board-certified physicians,
acupuncturists, naturopaths, herbalists, chiropractors, and
physical therapists.
Punctures, abrasions, incisions, and lacerations—as a dead-
end kid from Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, I can show you at
least one of those on some part of my body.
Despite all of the money being spent on products for energy,
many of which are merely caffeinated sugar water flavored with
some nutrients, none have come close to providing the kinds of
energy that I have demonstrated the New Jump Swing program
can give you.
In 1977, in my first book, The Philosophy of Divine Nutrition, I
challenged any seminary student, medical student, or astronaut
to a complete medical physical using both Western and Chinese
medical techniques. To this day, no takers. By the way, Tang was
the official breakfast drink of the U.S. astronauts at the time I
made that challenge.
In 1986, in my second book, The Way of PDN, I challenged
any minister, medical doctor, or professional athlete in America
to (1) a debate on the subject of sports nutrition, (2) a complete
medical diagnosis using both Western and Chinese diagnostic
methods, and (3) the Superstars competition! Also to this day,
no takers!
With all of the sports drinks and energy pills on the market
today, here is my third and final challenge!
I challenge the owner or formulator of any energy drink or
supplement on the world market to match or surpass my ninety-
three-hour record using their product. They have complete
choice of subject matter to talk on.
I neither talk, eat, nor drink bull of any kind or color.
