Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, India to a privileged caste. He received a comprehensive education but proved a mediocre student. He was married at age 13. Gandhi developed the technique of non-violent civil disobedience, called "Satyagraha", and played a key role in India's independence movement. Through his efforts, India gained independence in 1947. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948, and his birthday is now honored as the International Day of Non-Violence.
