2. SUMMARY
The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger is the story of Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh
out of college whose dream it is to write for The New Yorker. After spending some time abroad with her
boyfriend, Alex, Andrea contracts dysentery, loses twenty pounds and returns home to recover. Little
does she know that losing twenty pounds off her already slender frame makes her a perfect candidate
to work at Runway magazine, a fact she realizes after halfheartedly dropping her resume off at every
magazine publisher in the city and getting a call back from the extremely trendy fashion publication.
Although, Andrea has no desire to work in fashion, publishing or otherwise, she takes the job as Editor-
in-Chief of Miranda Priestly’s junior assistant after being assured that, after a year of service, she can
pretty much secure any job she wants in the city.

3. Before she knows it, Andrea is thrust into a world which she barely knew existed. Each
person working at the magazine is skinnier than the next, everyone dresses in the trendiest
and most expensive clothes imaginable, and Miranda Priestly expects her assistants to work
fourteen-hour days doing menial jobs such as making sure her coffee is the right temperature
and wrapping Christmas gifts. To make matters worse, Miranda is ungrateful, rude, spoiled,
and does not accept her employees, especially her assistants, making any mistakes.
As much as she hates Miranda, Andrea continues to do her job, holding out hope that a
job at The New Yorker is only months away. However, as she continues to put in long hours,
her relationships with her boyfriend, best friend and family as well as her self-esteem begin to
suffer. Events culminate when she must travel to Paris with Miranda and make a decision
between her job and the rest of her life.

4. CHARACTER
• Andrea "Andy" Sachs, a recent graduate college student, hired as junior personal
assistant to a powerful and tyrannical fashion magazine editor.
• Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of Runway, an influential fashion magazine published by
the Elias-Clark company. She is known for treating her subordinates in a manner that
borders on emotional and psychological abuse.
• Emily Charlton, Miranda's former junior assistant, now her senior assistant. She and
Andrea have a conflicted relationship.
• Alex Fineman, Andrea's boyfriend, who teaches at an elementary school in the
South Bronx through Teach for America.

5. • Lily Goodwin, a free-spirited graduate student in Russian literature at
Columbia with curly black hair. She is Andrea's roommate.
• Nigel, a very tall British man who serves as Runway's creative director. He is a
loud speaker with an outrageous sense of style, and the only person who can
get away with critiquing Miranda's personal wardrobe choices.
• Christian Collinsworth, a handsome young writer whom Andrea meets at a
party. They develop a mutual attraction.

6. PLOT
• Rising Action
Andrea's relationships become entangled because of her new job. Lily increasingly
turns to alcohol and picks up dubious men to relieve the pressure of graduate school.
Alex, struggling with his own demanding job as an inner-city schoolteacher, grows
frustrated with Andrea's long hours and constant stress. Andrea's relationship with
her family also suffers. Matters finally come to a head when her co-worker, Emily,
gets mononucleosis and Andrea must travel to Paris with Miranda in her stead.

7. • Climax
Andrea gets urgent calls from Alex and her parents asking her to call them.
She does and learns that Lily is comatose after driving drunk and wrecking a
car.
• Falling Action
Andrea decides that her family and friends are more important than her job,
and realizes to her horror that she is becoming more and more like Miranda.
She refuses to comply with Miranda's latest outrageous request, she is fired
on the spot, and returns home to reconnect with friends and family.

8. MORAL VALUE
You’re never too good for your job until you’re too good for your job.
This can be seen by the way Andrea walked into Runway confidently, thinking she’s better and more
intellectual than the other fashion-staffers, not so long after that she promptly gets shut down by
Miranda just because the clothes that she wears. Andy then learns that in life, sometimes you have to
swallow your pride, keep your head low, and work your butt off to prove yourself, then you’ll earn the
right to be judgmental and earning stuff like that is way more fun.
After proving herself in the Runway, Andrea then realizes that when the time is up, then it’s up. She
knows that it’s important to know her worth and check in with her ever-evolving wants and needs.
Maybe what she or others thought was a dream job, one that “a million girls would kill for," isn’t for her
anymore. It’s okay to reconfigure and move on.

9. MY COMMENT
For me, personally, I really like this kind of novel because it provides many valuable
lessons that can later be implemented when someone starts entering the working
world. Things that can be taken from this novel such as knowing the priorities in your
life and also knowing the value of yourself, it is very possible to be well guarded when
we start working. This novel is also very suitable to be read by teenagers who are
sometimes still confused to determine what they want to do in the future. As
mentioned above, this novel provides many real advice that occurs when we enter a
higher level such as working or entering the college.
