1. My magazine product analysis
My media product contrasts from a “typical” front cover for a newspaper in certain aspects, but on the other hand does have clear typical conventions. Typical features within my front cover are the photographs main headline, the articles included in the newspaper advertised on the front, and house-style fonts, in which appear on every current existing newspaper. A feature making my front cover ‘different’ is the fact I have not included a barcode, in which my reasons for this are so that it wasn’t portrayed as a selling newspaper, but in actual fact a newspaper, made my exiting college students, for college purposes / relations of college students and potential interested students.
As my product is intended for college students (currently existing students, new comers, or those interested) I based my articles on college-based activities.
The photograph on the front represents the stress some students can feel and face during a-levels, diplomas, or whichever course they are taking, and exams, therefore as soon as they witness the front cover will feel like they can relate to something, leading to slight interest.
Whilst producing my front cover, I researched via the internet, and shops various magazine front covers, therefore giving me a greater level of understanding within a typical front cover magazine, and what personally caught my eye. Throughout this, I picked up the skill of being able to place my photograph on my work, in which wont effect the writing – it places itself over the photograph, or behind, depending on where you would like it. I found this a great technique to learn.
In terms of colours on my front cover, I stuck to neutral but deep colours i.e. purple, grey, black and white. My fonts vary, which also makes it different from a typical front cover as most keep their style the same throughout. I used a wide range of editions i.e. bold, italic, and underline.
Another aspect making it contrast from your average front cover is that I have included two photographs. The normal expectation within magazine front cover magazines usually is one photograph, in which represents the main article, taking up a majority of the space for that certain article.
The audience for my magazine, as stated before would be students (existing, or potentially interested) hoping to create awareness about the local activities, latest ‘gossip’ within the college, upcoming events and exams, and teaching.
Using many different methods, varying from ‘expectations’ and new interests, I have tried attracting my audience using a variety of methods.
For my preliminary tasks I have used a mixture of publisher and word.
