Deforestation is the clearing of natural forests through logging and burning, which occurs for fuel, commodities, and cleared land for livestock, plantations, and settlements. Causes of deforestation include corruption, inequitable distribution of wealth and power, population growth, urbanization, and in some cases globalization. Deforestation is an ongoing problem that contributes to climate change by reducing the greenhouse gas absorption of forests and accounts for 20% of global greenhouse emissions. To reduce deforestation, we must decrease fossil fuel usage, protect native forests, and plant trees in urban and deforested areas.
