Due to the fact that one of the University’s
philosophy is preparing women to
undertake more prominent parts in their
families, local communities and the nation
all in all. Accordingly, both Sudanese and
International students are set up to be
proactive change operators and pioneers.
Civic engagement has turned into an
essential part of the university’s academic
activities, and considered a main feature of
its main goals and mission.
We undertake community development
programs to serve the needs of local
communities, organize outreach programs
to raise awareness and establish networks,
and establish partnerships with different
entities from the local community with
includes entities from the private sector,
government and civil society organizations.
Azza Osman, a Sudanese community
psychology student at the AUC was assigned
by MA’AN to write a case study describing
the experience of Ahfad University for
women based in Sudan with civic
engagement. The university coordinates
civic engagement into research and the
improvement of information through
educating, directing exploration, creating
training programs, and having integrated
community- oriented curriculum, in
addition to extracurricular community
outreach programs. Azza’s main role was to
meet with Ahfad’s program administrators
to understand the program details,
interviewing students who participated in
the program as well as students who will
participate to understand the level of
preparation and the benefits they gained."

2. Maan’s Big Awarding Ceremony
Working on getting students more involved
in the development of their societies, Ma’an
launched in November 2016 a national
competition for 40 Egyptian universities
from across Egypt’s 27 governorates,
encouraging student groups to present their
solutions to social issues in four different
areas: women’s empowerment, education,
entrepreneurship and human rights. The 5
winning teams receive a grant of $1500 to
support the implementation of their
proposals.
“Encouraging students to get involved in the
community expands their academic
experience while in school.
Youth are an asset and can be very effective
for the country’s future.” The competition
was designed to help students, start their
own initiatives. On February 16, 2017, 21
young Egyptian students had been awarded
at the Ma’an’s Award Ceremony with mini
grants to help them stand on their own feet
and thrive. Ma’an’s competition aims to
empower young Egyptians with the right
skills they need to implement their
initiatives and start their own business. The
uniqueness of the Ma’an’s competition is in
how it supports the students not only by
providing them with monetary awards but
also by designing special trainings to
improve their skills as well as creating job
opportunities that help in the society’s
development.
“The goal is to institutionalize
civic engagement at univer-
sities,” Explained Dr. Ali Awni

university civic engagement, impact of related activities and what can
